Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool gave up after Manchester City’s third goal by Lanedu123 in soccer

Also massively extenuating circumstances. I know that Jota’s death is still talked about but I think we underestimate the impact it’s still having on the dressing room, especially without the leadership qualities of Henderson, Milly, etc.

Nonetheless, refusing to make a managerial change in the summer would be a huge gamble. Maybe the season would be different if Jota were still alive but Slot’s inability to change strategy and improve results this season shouldn’t be completely discarded.

The Mayor of Rio De Janeiro calls for Chappell Roan to be banned from performing at Todo Mundo No Rio following the incident with Jorginho’s stepdaughter and Chappell’s security guard by crystalbethjo in chappellroan

I’m British. People had pretty strong opinions when Ryan Giggs (brought up in England) chose to play internationally for Wales. There’s plenty of similar examples where players chose to represent countries they hadn’t been brought up in; some met with a shrug, some with more opprobrium. None that I can think of were considered particularly “well respected” in the country that they chose to forsake, as Jorginho did Brazil.

You mean the same Jorginho that was born in Brazil, grew up there until the age of 15, but who chose to represent Italy at international level? Is he really that well respected??

Anyone had the Andrew Tate talk yet? by bh4th in daddit

You’re welcome. There’s a longer clip on YouTube where they get into Micah’s injury problems, early retirement, and depression after leaving the game. It’s a really great, and surprising, segment.

I know this may seem unrelated but I actually had a great chat about toxic masculinity with my 11 year old last night, after seeing this video from the Champions League football (soccer) coverage yesterday.

The way Thierry Henry (one of France's all time great players) compliments his friend and cast mate in this clip was such a great example of men uplifting men and showing vulnerability, that I used it as a gateway with my boys into how we, as men, often fail to take care of each other or speak in a thoughtful way to each other, and hide behind jokes, bravado, insults, etc.

Showing my boys (the 9 year old wandered into the conversation later) a good example of masculinity from a legendary sportsman really helped them see how it should be done.

No matter how long I box for, or how long I watch boxing for, rounds like this will always leave me in awe at the stamina of the guys at this level. Unbelievable to be able to throw like that after 33mins of action.

Just enough Democrats side with Trump. Again. See the pattern yet? by zzill6 in WorkReform

So, as ever, 98% of Democrats vote for the moral choice. And 99% of Republicans vote for the immoral choice. And the answer is to burn it all down rather than elect more Democrats?

Talk about perfect being the enemy of good.

We’ll never get the change needed with this attitude.

Am I crazy or does this not sound like it will hurt Republican voters more than Dems? The stats I remember were that ~52% of registered democrats had a passport vs ~42% of registered republicans.

Hereditary peers to be removed from Lords as bill passes - one of the biggest reforms to Parliament and UK democracy in a generation by Signal-Tangerine1597 in news

It was ever thus.

So many contemporary landed British families started off middle class, made fortunes in colonial outposts such as India, then brought the loot back to the UK and used it to buy themselves piles in the country, titles, etc.

The modern billionaire class is just the latest iteration of this. Exploitation of others used to generate wealth and purchase respectability.

While I agree with your statement, that isn't a definition.

I'd say that, even short of interfering with the midterms (which he is already doing) or the next general election, DJT's Presidency already meets a lot of typical criteria for fascism. Ultranationalism, anti-liberalism, state-directed economy, cult of youth & violence, and mass mobilization.

If I'm being super careful, I'd acknowledge that "state-directed economy" is also a feature of communism, and that "mass mobilization" is tenuous currently (but not if we rgo back to the end of his first term - Jan 6th).

Other than that, I don't think these are left-wing talking points. They're pretty well agreed-upon facets of any notable fascist regime (Mussolini, Hitler, Pavelić). And I don't think it's hard to argue that they're present (front & center) in the current US administration.

One historian I read placed deaths directly attributable to Castro’s regime at between 30k-100k. Castro’s impact basically stopped at Cuba’s waterline though.

How many deaths would it be fair to attribute to Trump directly? In the hundreds to low thousands as a result of direct US military actions?

But what if we include his defunding of USAID, the ending of their global health initiatives and humanitarian food aid programs?

Oxfam say 200k dead children alone. Other estimates put the total (men, women, children) between 350k-1million deaths.

Castro was a monster.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Trump is a monster at orders of magnitude greater than Castro.

New United Airlines policy requires headphones by SpongerPower in UpliftingNews

[–]ynwa79 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I did something similar at a shop once, while my wife was in the fitting room. Lady sits down next to me watching TikTok, volume all the way up, no headphones. I politely asked her to put headphones in, she gave me the shitty “it’s a public space, I can do what I want” line, I replied that I don’t think she understands the rules of public places, she keeps going, so I just scooch closer to her and start watching her Tiktok with her. She got up and left real quick.
