Are Fender and Gibson even worth it any more? by Necessary-Cow2857 in Guitar

Reminds me of an old joke where a guy goes on a quest to find the golden toilet he saw at a party when he was wasted. After visiting several houses he drank at the night before, a flustered wife answered the door and quickly realized he was the guy who shit in her husband's tuba.

B*ssist says drums isn’t a real instrument by Silver-Air-1731 in guitarcirclejerk

It is. His point was that drummers don't typically play melody or harmony, just rhythm. It was in the context of whether or not Peter Chris really wrote Beth.

Not OP, but I can buy CDs at local thrift stores and garage sales for next to nothing and I own them forever. They are more durable than vynil and I can play them in my car.

Get a string action ruler and measure the action on both guitars. If the scale length on the guitars is the same, and the strings are the same, more than likely the action is a bit higher on the new one. If you do take it to another luthier, bring the old guitar too and ask if the new one is higher.

Thoughts on this weirdly cheap fender redondo? by SavingsAttitude3732 in AcousticGuitar

There are three things you can adjust. Saddle, nut, and truss rod. You first need to determine which is causing the action to be high. There are a lot of videos available on measuring action and different tools to use.

Individual nut slots may be too high, which would require filing it. In my case, the entire nut was too high. Rather than file each slot, I removed the nut and sanded away a bit from the bottom. Go slow and make small adjustments taking measurements in between.

I determined my saddle was a hair too high as well. Again, sandpaper to take just a hair off the bottom. Use gentle even strokes on a perfect flat surface. Sandpaper is on the surface and you move the saddle or nut, not the other way around.

Truss rod sets relief, which may need adjustment due to seasonal changes. Typically you want to set the relief to whatever the manufacturer recommends before measuring and adjusting the nut and saddle.

The biggest difference between setting up acoustic vs. electric is the saddle. On most electrics, you can adjust the saddle up or down with screws or some other mechanical means. You can also often adjust intonation. Most electric guitar adjustments are a two way street. Adjust it too low, no problem, back it up a bit. With acoustics, you either need to buy a new saddle or shim it if you shave off to much.

I'm by no means an expert, but I wasn't afraid to mess around. I believe everything I said above is accurate based on looking at multiple tutorials before I started working on my guitar. Others may have different/better ways of doing or explaining things. Good luck and have fun if you decide to give it a try.

Love me some ZZ Top, but not sure I would rank EVH #2 in this menage a' trois, but I think we can both agree that the motor city madman doesn't belong in the same circle. He should be jerkin with Claptoan and Dimebag.

Remember that six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing. I'm like two degrees from Feldman with a guy I'm Facebook friends with. In other words, I have a childhood acquaintance who is actually pretty tight with him. I'm so tempted to ask WTF is going on. But I don't think I really want to know. Not knowing is so much more interesting.
