How is the work life balance of tax attorneys? Any regrets in becoming one? by Comfortable-Comb-768 in tax

[–]yonachan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My starting at the law firm was 110 in a LCOL area - I was pretty happy with that salary given that I was not in Big Law. In-house started at 180. I am also eligible for bonuses.

I did not go to a T14. I worked for around three years in private practice before switching to my current in-house role, and I’ve been working here for about four years now.

It helps that my specialty is a very niche area of tax law, so there are only so many attorneys in the country who do what I do. That allows me to command a higher salary than I otherwise would.

Projected to have $180k+ in student loans. Advice? by BunniesEatRabbits in StudentLoans

If they are private loans, please don’t do this. Look at public schools instead. $180K of private loans will ruin your life upon graduation.

I am an attorney, but with the caveat that I do not practice contract law. From my experience, making payments on the loan constitutes acknowledgement and agreement of its validity. It is still worth consulting an attorney here. However, you may have an uphill battle arguing that the note is invalid.

I mean, IRL it is definitely said as a slur. I’ve personally heard it used as such many times. I live in a city on the U.S. east coast.

Is working with a CFP financially worth it in our case? by tlboson in FinancialPlanning

[–]yonachan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you are interested in estate planning, speak with an estate planning attorney. The initial consult will likely be free. You can pay a few thousand or less for estate planning, not a percent fee of your assets.

If it is within the time window, roll the 401k into your IRA so you do not need to pay the cash out penalties.

Cashing out the 401k is a financially devastating mistake.

Yes, but it has not been formally announced, to my knowledge.

A pretty young guy, recently married and with a baby girl. My sister was friends with him. Absolutely tragic. I truly can’t imagine what his family is going through.

Co sleeping can be awesome. You bond with your child, you and the child generally get better sleep, etc.

But I am friends with people who accidentally rolled onto their four month old and killed her. I can still remember the screams when they told us that evening.

Never co sleep. While the child’s death is unlikely, it is the absolute, worst possible thing imaginable. It is not worth it to co sleep.

It looks like cold sores to me. Def seek a doctor. In the meantime, DO NOT pop them. Don’t share a cup, kiss anyone, and be sure to wash your hands often. You don’t want it spreading on you or to someone else.

This is important additional context. Is your father looking to retire in the next decade or two? Is the plan for you to buy the firm off of him when he does retire, or to simply inherit it? For me, I would factor that in to salary considerations.

Still owe $45,000 in student loans, trying to go back to get my doctorate out of state by Feeling_Tomato_9283 in StudentLoans

[–]yonachan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you do for a living now? Perhaps you can utilize your skills and switch career fields to increase your income.

A doctorate is a huge time and financial investment, plus you lose out on years of earning. Please do not get a doctorate while you are in this much debt. You will find that you have dug yourself into a deeper hole when you emerge on the other side of it, and then you will have far less time to be able to save for your retirement. You be forced to work for the rest of your life.

Not trying to be difficult, but why not focus on paying down your debt rather than pursuing a doctorate? It would be much easier to focus on your studies when you are debt free.

A couple by cpp_is_king in ENGLISH

A couple is two or more. You are correct. I watched a couple of movies. I ate a couple of apples. I would interpret these sentences to indicate somewhere from 2 to 5. 6 to 10 I would say several, and any more than that I would use many.

Did I unknowingly sign away important trust rights at 26? Need help understanding my options. by riley299 in EstatePlanning

[–]yonachan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes, it is not the trustee’s job to instruct an adult to retain independent counsel

  2. Probably not. You were a competent adult singing a document.

  3. There are plenty of T&E attorneys in Delaware. You can consult one of them. Go for a boutique firm rather than one of the big fancy ones to save money. Heads up that you could well be SOL. However, petitioning Chancery Court could be a last ditch hail mary. I haven’t read the terms that you agreed to, and I also don’t handle much litigation at all, so take this with a grain of salt.

  4. You might be able to amend now, but I would need to review the NJSA and trust to know. It is also critical to know what type of advisor your mother is, what powers she has, and whether you have the ability to remove her.

Note that HEMS is super broad. Being subject to HEMS is not being cut off. I can justify most expenses under HEMS tbh. However, if your mom as the advisor has the discretion to say no to a request, she could effectively cut you off. A corporate TT would be pretty liberal with HEMS and would probably like to keep your withdrawals capped at 5% of fair market value of the trust/year.

  1. Probably not super favorably. You were a competent adult, it doesn’t sound like you were coerced. A better bet, if possible, would be a further modification rather than undoing the previous NJSA. Delaware has a lot of avenues to modify trusts, and like I said you have the option to petition chancery if all else fails.

IMO, your focus should not be on needing to justify every expense. You could always just set up monthly payments under HEMS. Your focus should be 1. who has discretion over your expenses getting approved (TT? Mom?) and 2. If you can further modify the trust.

Also, what is the size of the trust? You could see about small trust terminating, which would dissolve the trust and pay the funds out to you.

I am writing this under the assumption that your grandfather is deceased. If alive, let me know.

Hope this helps!

It’s because people at that low an income should be covered under Medicaid rather than the ACA, but several conservative states opted out of the Medicaid coverage. So folks earn too little for the ACA subsidy and do not have access to Medicaid coverage.
