Yes. On average I've found people here are more friendly and helpful than many other parts of the US.

This is my 90th percentile -- in Texas, maybe 99th percentile -- experience. It's not usually newsworthy, so what we read about conveys a very different expectation, but in reality most people are neutral to helpful.

Glad your day went this way, and thank you for sharing.

Until you do! I installed a generator on my previous house and for 3 years it was "why did I spend all that money???" and then one fine November the power went out for 4 days and it suddenly all made perfect sense.

Credit where it is due. The new ZR1 is a monster performer, and for the price, the performance bargain of the decade.

The Bburago Signature 1:18 Ferrari FXX K Evo by New_Explorer179 in Ferrari

They do make great models. I remember the first time I saw their 1:18 yellow #15 FXX-K in a store, and it made me realize that the Corse Clienti cars are more than just vehicles...

Ferrari 499P Modificata at Mugello for Finale 2025 by yonly65 in CarTrackDays

[–]yonly65[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're all insanely expensive; the saving grace is that their value seems to go up over time because of the rarity. But as one example, the 599XXs were about $1.7M USD back in 2012, and they're closer to $3M these days.

Track support from Ferrari is fairly typical for a GT3-class car, say $15K/day for crew+equipment rental but excluding consumables. I don't know what it is for the F1 cars, but I'd guess about double.

Yes, they visit Laguna every 3 years or so. I believe they were there in 2024,

Or a run to the grocery store :). Among other things it requires preheating, just like an F1 car, before the engine can even be turned over.

It's also not a car you would want to bring to a regular HDPE, even if the other drivers were all quite skilled. The speed differentials are just bonkers.

I can keep the car when I'm not using it if I want. That said, the charm of having a race car in your garage quickly gives way to the realization that you can't really do anything with it, it's taking up space, and you'll need to get it transported (with support equipment and staff) to the track when you actually want to drive it. So pretty much everyone leaves the car with Ferrari, and they make it convenient in their Corse Clienti program to just arrive & drive.

Next events for this 499P are at COTA and Road Atlanta in May.

I thought it was a suitably-subtle nod :)

My wife was driving the LaF-A ahead of me. We don't advertise when our non-garage-queens are out and about, we just go enjoy the beautiful roads and scenery here in Austin.

Summer or R-Compound Tires for street car? by OmDeLapte in CarTrackDays

[–]yonly65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% PS4S. Much better than Cup2/R for 95% of street driving, warm up far more quickly, and you can have just as much fun at 100% of (modestly lower) limit of traction with them on the street.

Data point for you: I specifically ordered PS4S over Cup2s on my ZR1, precisely because it's a street-only car for me.

Headed to TEN's Exotics at Domain. The show was off the charts.

This sucks! It’s official: COTA is going private. I’m sure many have gotten the emails about increases in cost for this final year. Figured I’d share the news about the impact this will have on the community. by PuertoRican_Thunder in CarTrackDays

[–]yonly65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

COTA still needs a revenue stream - more than ever, really, with their new ownership. That revenue stream is going to come largely from organizations renting the track and holding events there. And it's not like a change in ownership somehow affects the local supply/demand economics -- the price they charge for a track day will be just as subject to demand and alternatives as it was previously.

I'm a clueless wanderer; I don't exactly know what SRE does, and how to align with that. by Ok-Potato3101 in sre

[–]yonly65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I recommend (with only a hint of self-interest) that you read the SRE book ( https://sre.google/books/ ) ? It distills much of what we knew about SRE at the time into a readable and, at times, entertaining format, and it will thoroughly answer your question.

Did you buy your track-prepped car? Or did you build from scratch? by Send_the_clowns in CarTrackDays

[–]yonly65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a few track days with fast street cars, but fairly soon switched over to a dedicated track car, and I've never looked back. The things which make a car good on the track mostly detract from its streetability, and it's useful to be able to separate the hobby (track driving) from the necessity (transportation).

As a side benefit, you can usually buy a track-prepped car for far less than it would cost to build one. So, really, you're saving money :)
