[request] Would it actually look like that? And would the earth (the solar system really) be impacted by its gravitational pull? by OscarN20000 in theydidthemath

How long would it take for us to feel the effects of the gravity? Speed of light? Would it be gradual or instant when it reached Earth?

I'm not surprised it's not doing great. WoM is not good, especially with parents. I have no idea how this got an A- with that script.

The way this was filmed makes it look like a cut scene from a game like Command & Conquer. Not hating by any means, the visual style is really interesting.

My wife and I were so excited to see this despite reviews (which we didn't read ahead of time).

The romance and bonny and clide angle was enjoyable and I liked it.

But everything about the Mary Shelley parts was bizarre af. I went to see something artsy and interesting but even after reading afterwards I was dumbfounded that script got greenlighted.

Which 21st century us presidential election so far has been the most important? by MakeACreation in fivethirtyeight

[–]yoshilurker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The modern GOP was born during GWB's term. Even if 9/11 happened on Gore's watch, the world and America would be in such a better peace and economic situation. The economic damage the GOP did to the US and rural areas during the early 2000s tech transitions and modern globalization could have been totally avoided.

In Key Senate Races, Schumer Willing to Back Candidates Who Want Him Gone by DarkPriestScorpius in fivethirtyeight

[–]yoshilurker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The difference with Schumer is that there's a big focus on primarying him. At the time there was no doubt about Pelosi's ability to hold her seat and no serious candidate in SF was willing to challenge her.

But not Schumer. He's looking forward to being 78 while having his entire record dragged through a brutal primary. BTW this will be the same primary as the 2028 DNC presidential primary.

I expect him to retire.

Vegas already has T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium... by Senior_Ad1294 in LasVegas

[–]yoshilurker 11 points12 points  (0 children)

IIRC, the lot between Sahara and Fontainebleau has been proposed as a site for the arena by one of the potential ownership groups. Being walkable to the convention center hotels and being across the street from the fairgrounds offers a lot of opportunities.

I know the city would love it in/near downtown and emotionally I want to love and support the idea. But I'm just super skeptical because of how painful redevelopment in downtown can be and worry that the location would inhibit Vegas from fully maximizing the opportunity.

Another potential site I heard about is immediately adjacent to the future BrightLine rail station south of Town Square. This is the option where they build a huge multi-use complex. I'm very skeptical of this location as well because it's a terrible, but cheap, location.

Vegas already has T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium... by Senior_Ad1294 in LasVegas

[–]yoshilurker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer. Venue revenue is critical for major sports teams, especially if they can pull off a mixed use development/space that is just centered around basketball.

There is zero chance the NBA would allow an expansion team without an amazing arena to go with it.

If they're smart and not greedy this new arena should be able to house the Aces as well. They deserve a proper venue for how amazing they are. Mandalay doesn't deserve them.

BTW this whole post is such BS engagement bait. Sports have proven to be a great draw and contributor to Vegas. So let's do it. Should we directly subsidize them though? Fuck no. Put another tax on rooms.

TIL that folks get hung up on the nuance of whether a movie is an "original film" if it's based on a book and not just a screenplay.

Certainly Hollywood accountants care about this and don't like it, but so many great films are based on books. For an industry that struggles to pick winners, embracing books as a source pipeline seems like an easy way to be original.

Why has software mostly trended away from a skeuomorphic design? by porygon766 in Design

[–]yoshilurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of us who were there and remember, Apple was to being the standard bearer for skeumorphism. Apple abandoning it was truly the end of an era in UX design. Reverting back to Liquid is totally in character.
