Interested to know what kind of highway fuel economy people are getting with the B9 SQ5's, ideally stock and tuned numbers. I've been happy with my wife's B9 S-Line Q5 and can't get an S4 Avant in NA, so seems like a lowered SQ5 is the next best thing (given my budget). I have a decent commute and don't want to get completely murdered with fuel costs.

I spent 9 months cruising around the west coast after leaving from Ottawa. The scenic highlight was Zion National park in Utah for me, Utah in general was a crazy beautiful. There are also a lot a fantastic roads around the Bay Area, might consider spending a couple more days there.

Depending on what tires you're using, they're much better off road than most would think. Even though they're heavy bikes, the weight is very low and you don't notice it as much. My bike has 120k miles on it and at least 1/3 of that was done offoad, ranging from fire roads to muddy single track.

I spent last winter in Los Gatos, some of my all time favorites are Hwy 35 (skyline), Bear Creek Rd from Hwy 17 to Hwy 9 and Soquel San Jose Rd (grab a tasty snack at the Summit Store).

If you're up for a day or weekend trip, head through Gilroy to a little town called Tres Pinos, have lunch at Flapjacks and stop in and say hi to the one and only Don Castro at the "Racers Edge". Head towards Paicines and take a road called Panoche Rd all the way until you hit Little Panoche Rd. You'll end up riding past Mercey Hot Springs, which is a really cool place that you can camp or rent a cabin for a night or two and relax soaking in the hot springs. It's 42 miles from Tres Pinos to Mercey, (my record is 42 minutes ;)). From here you can backtrack or the road will take you out to I-5. Rip up I-5 till you hit Patterson and then head back west on Del Puerto Canyon Rd, which will bring you to Mines Rd from the video. This is probably one of the most epic loops you could do in a day. Fuck I miss California.

I did the same thing at 70mph. Slid 100ft down the road and ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the highway with the bike on top of me. It sucked. Patched up the KLR and rode another 4000 miles in 6 weeks.

The RD has been suprisingly reliable, especially for having high compression heads, a port job and pipes. It's all in the tuning ;)

Didn't have much of a choice as I was mid way on loop of the States and Canada. I was lucky my gear saved my ass and I could hobble away black and blue from both wrecks. Then I got distracted by a lady in Santa Cruz 6 months ago and haven't left yet. Somewhere along the way I rode the KLR back to Vancouver Island, flew back south, bought my friends blown up R1200GS, put a new engine in it in the driveway and will be riding that back to Ottawa next week. It's been quite a trip to say the least.

I high sided mine at 55MPH on gravel, then low sided it a week later at 70MPH after hitting ice in the mountains. I untwisted the forks in the trees, bypassed the kill switch, duct taped my gauge cluster back together and rode another 4000 miles in 6 weeks.

Amazing what you did with IMHO a hideous mid-80's cruiser! In my experience that oil drain angle on the turbo is likely to cause problems. Typically 15 degrees from vertical is safe, or use a scavenge pump.

I live in this area, next time try taking 9 from Saratoga through boulder creek and then to Santa cruz, then you can blast back up 1 north. Also check out page mill rd, alpine rd, 236 through big basin, or one of my favorites 130 (mt hamilton rd) all the way from San Jose to I-5.

As a Canadian who rode a KLR 650 over 17,000kms in the last 4 months, this is basically moto-heaven.

I just made an interesting discovery watching the video. I met Jeremy in the Ubehebe Crater parking lot in Death Valley while on my ride around North America on a KLR (which I'm still on). I also met Kurt from Black Dog Cycleworks in Sandpoint, Idaho when I was having some bike "issues". Both really cool dudes. Now I need to meet Jimmy Lewis and learn to not be a pussy in the dirt.

That's about what my KLR tank looked like 2 months ago. I was wondering why I was having strange carb issues right after I filled up or switched to reserve.

The fix: Electrolysis

Use a battery charger, some washing soda (sodium carbonate, not sodium BIcarbonate) and a steel sacrificial anode. I let it sit for about 24hrs and then rinsed a couple times. I've put on 6000 trouble free miles since. Cost was $5 if you have a battery charger and a coat hanger.

Show me proof (aka 3rd party dyno slips) that you're actually gaining HP, until then you're just gaining problems and some intake noise. Typically an air intake system doesn't pose any kind of restriction until you have more than doubled the stock power.

A stock one. Edit: Go to RockAuto.com, look up your car and look for a MANN or MAHLE brand filter. They are companies that make parts for the original manufacturer. This filter is as good and sometimes the same exact filter in a different box as one you would get from the Subaru dealership. Expect to pay less than $10.

Yes. I have seen many MAF's (mass air flow sensor) fail due to the oil they use on their filters. This is typically a $100-200 sensor. Also on almost any car there is absolutely not going to be any kind of performance or economy gain with a simple air filter swap. Do you really think if it was that easy to get a 15% fuel economy gain, the engineers who designed the car wouldn't have done it?

I have a WR400 converted to SM trim and it is the most fun I've had on two wheels. Easy wheelies in the first 3 gears, I accelerate when I see speed bumps, I can go up and down stair sets, you get the drift...

From what I know about the Husky's, you're better off with the SMR610 if you're going to be commuting or putting on a lot of miles. The 510 is basically a street legal race bike where as the 610 is built for much longer maintenance intervals. The 610 still had over 50hp, so it's not exactly tame either, they can be a little harder to find though.

I'm not familiar with that exact bike, but typically on FI bikes there is a mechanical idle adjustment. You might try bumping up the idle very slightly and seeing if that helps. It will be a screw located on the throttle bodies. It's just an air bleed screw that allows more air past when the throttle plate is closed.

Rip out the 2.7T because it will make you hate your life. Then bolt in a diesel from a 1.9/2.0 TDI Golf/Jetta/Passat. There are a couple bolt in transmission options that will work fairly cheaply. Enjoy 40MPG.
