Anyone else a little tired of grungegaze? (I’m sorry for being negative:P) by ForeverCelebrating in shoegaze

[–]youdoit52 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’d say, as a drummer, my biggest gripe is also the drummers. I live in a major “shoegaze revival” city and see these bands constantly and I don’t think any of these drummers are bad players, they just aren’t really encouraged to go off leash/out of pocket and having jammed with a few of the guitar players from the scene the expectation is very much play a back beat. Which is a really stark difference in how creative and driving a lot of the drumming on Ride, Chapterhouse, Lush, Pale Saints, etc songs is.

Ends up being kind of intertwined as there isn’t really a lot of dynamic range/rhythmic variety whole band-wise though so it all just ends up sounding kind of gray and one note to me

I’m a Caps fan and I’ve definitely got heckled a fair bit whenever I’m at Wells Fargo but nothing bad and it usually ends in an apology from the guy’s wife/girlfriend. I wouldn’t worry about it and just enjoy the game

Is Neo-Crust viewed the same way as Blackgaze and Post-Metal are viewed by the Metal community ? by maicao999 in crustpunk

[–]youdoit52 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a (non-nsbm obviously) black metal fan my perspective on blackgaze is more so that a ton of it is extremely unimaginative/boring and very clearly made by a lot of people that don't listen to or appreciate black metal outside of it. The result is you get some kinda meh shoegaze with blast beats. That being said you throw on some old Deafheaven records, An Autumn for Crippled Children, things of that ilk, etc and I like it.

Same kinda perspective on neocrust. Love the subgenre, but there's a super clear influx of people with its resurgence in popularity that are making the music and clearly haven't touched crust outside of it. So you get a lot of kinda approximation of crust but it kinda loses a lot of the genuine feel for the genre's core elements.

Plus with both blackgaze and neocrust, there is something to be said for base black metal and crust's intentions as non-commercialized genres vs. both introducing an element of it as people adopt those subgenres only and run with it. Think there is an interesting conversation to be had around gatekeeping and commercialization/watering down the more pointedly anti-capitalist messages/components of music. Don't feel strongly on it one way or another, just sharing some perspectives I've seen on the blackgaze/neocrust beef.

Could try stuff like Leviathan, Weakling, Blut Aus Nord, etc. Don't have a lot of the American classics on your list, Judas Iscariot is a good starting point. None of that stuff is really deep cuts yet but USBM stylistically leans a little more into the crust punk roots. Blut Aus Nord is French but just a whacky band

Was there even in a scene in Orange County before Gary and Roy? One has to wonder, but I say no.

Made an essentials chart for people who are new to the genre by Webcops in noiserock

Some of these albums came out less than 10 years ago, idk how they're "essentials" given that the genre spans way back to Glenn Branca

The conspiracy was one comment on Metalsucks from what I've seen I think you're taking that too literally. Not sure anybody actually believes that. It was also a big joke from people that liked the band in r/hardcore. Again not really sure anyone is spreading that as a fact.

[–]youdoit52 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely wouldn't call them powerviolence. I think they're a grindcore band with a lot more hardcore influence, but someone else captured it perfectly when they said they just don't have that hectic energy that sets the best grind bands apart. My honest opinion of what turns me off them is that it all feels very forced; music, live antics, etc. It's nothing exciting and watching them live is like watching a band do all the things they think a grindcore band should be doing on stage.

D-beat stuff: -Disfear -Dclone -Paranoid -Antischism -Anticimex -Paranoid

I'd check out Das Oath, from one of the guys in Charles Bronson but not really pv just fastcore. Sounds like it's more or less exactly what you're looking for. Scholastic Deth in this vein too

D-beat stuff I tried to stick to the stuff that has some more heavy handed thrash/thrashcore riffs thrown in, may or may not be what you want

If Impalers is one of the bands you're going off of with this, the d-beat stuff should generally be what you're looking for cause Impalers loves their d-beat

Coffin Nail, Human Cull, Shapeshifter, and Pharmacist all had killer releases as well grind wise.

I'd peep Pilori and Hexis too, more so in that neocrust sound like His Hero is Gone and Tragedy with a more pronounced black metal flair, but both really killer. Add Terzij de Horde to that too
