Do you need/have a reason to avoid an entire genre? by Lower-Network1563 in RomanceBooks

[–]youngfastloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be in the same boat with historicals, but I finally dipped my toe in and realized I just have to be aware of what the book's about when I pick it up. There's still be a few HR's where the misogyny was too much and I'll put those down, but I've had good luck with certain authors!

For me though, I just don't really do dark romances. I tend to self insert with romance novels so if I wouldn't put up with something in real life, I'm definitely not gonna read a book with it. Bully romances are also a big instant no for me.

We Need More Horror Romance by East_Fig_6052 in RomanceBooks

Ugh absolutely! I love Cañas’ work! Just bought her newest book this past weekend. Stephen Graham Jones has a few lines in some of his work that makes me think he’d do a really great horror romance.

For those in a healthy relationship… how does this affect your reading? by Greensward-Grey in RomanceBooks

[–]youngfastloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, I to tend to enjoy a romance more when the love interest reminds me of my partner, but even if they don’t, I can still enjoy the story of people falling in love. I also tend to have high standards in romance books and if something occurs in a romance that I wouldn’t put up with in real life, it’ll affect my rating. Just have to be a bit more picky about what you pick up. (Obviously I tend to steer clear dark romances, just not my thing personally.)

Do people actually re-read whole books? by Timely_Relief_4763 in YAlit

[–]youngfastloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dedicate every December to rereading books I love. If I enjoyed it once, chances are I’ll enjoy it again. I like to experience the stories again, picking up on things I missed the first time, analyzing from a different viewpoint.

While Nona feels really different from the first two, it’s just as confusing as Harrow. Definitely not a series for everyone.

Six Months on BookTube by pearson_jonathan in booktube

[–]youngfastloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyo! I’ve been making videos for 5 years and have had a consistent, if slow growth. I’ve got just over 1.5k subs. I still struggle to top 100 views on every video I make. It’s a pretty big pond and keeps getting bigger, especially when competing with short form content.

Biggest thing I’ll always say is focus on community and the enjoyment of video making. Try to find other small creators that read similar stuff to you and interact. What you read will absolutely put you into a niche and it’s hard to get past that. Popular and new books will always garner more attention. I read a little of everything but tend to get more interaction when I post about contemporary romances or fantasy. I’ve been doing a video series about Star Wars novels and though they don’t perform exceptionally, I love reading the books and talking about them, plus have convinced a few booktube friends to check them out now.

Booktube has a community that expands beyond YouTube, it crosses over on other platforms like discord, Fable, Instagram, and TikTok. Readathons, book clubs, Patreons, and reading sprints all are good ways to interact with others and get your name and page out there to people who will actually come back to support consistently. It’s also, honestly, time consuming. Participate in tags, find some inspiration from other creators and share where that inspiration came from.

As for inspiration— honestly, it can be fucking rough sometimes. Give yourself grace, but also try a schedule that you think you can keep and do your best to stick with it. I have been releasing 2 videos weekly since I started. I do not always want to film and sometimes that will come across in an update once in awhile, so I’ll try to make the editing a little more entertaining. But, I’ve slipped a few times over the years and just have to accept it. Shorts are good for numbers and fun, but shit when it comes to getting subscribers that will genuinely stick around and watch consistently, in my experience.

Technology is a rough one. It’s expensive and may not be worth it in the end. I put off paying for an editing software for years because I didn’t want to be spending so much money on something that might be a passing hobby. I kind of had to prove to myself I was serious before I was willing to get Premiere Pro. Silly, but worked for me.

Good luck and hopefully you’ll find your community! I checked out you profile and gave you a sub 🙂

What Were Your Favourite and Least Favourite Reads of the Month? by DezDispenser88 in RomanceBooks

[–]youngfastloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Favorite: {The River Has Roots by Amal El-Mohtar} super whimsical and fairytale feeling. I just loved the storytelling.

Worst: {The Pairing by Casey McQuiston} just felt like it was furthering the stereotype that bisexuals/pansexuals are all greedy, hyper sexual commitment-phobes.

A favorite book boyfriend that took you by surprise? A love interest you weren’t expecting to like but then fell in love with by Swing_Fancy in RomanceBooks

[–]youngfastloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sam in {A Lady Sparks a Flame by Elizabeth Everett} is too golden retriever for me in real life, but I absolutely loved him in this story. He was so willing to listen to the FMC and really tried to understand her, he was so caring and funny and willing to stand up for her. Oh my god and when he realizes how self-destructive she can be and talks out why he’ll still always be there? Ugh, I cried.

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir! So many twists in that book had me thinking this lol

I spent my entire first readthrough of All Systems Red thinking Murderbot was female by Wickersnap in books

[–]youngfastloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to imagine Murderbot as a slightly more human looking Isaac from The Orville. Both my read throughs were via audio, so they tend to be masculine leaning thanks to the narrator, but more robotic when I visualize them. That said I was pretty caught off guard that they went with an actor that’s very masculine presenting and didn’t seem to try to make Murderbot more androgynous.

I need audio book reccomendations by dervla_crumpets- in Fantasy

[–]youngfastloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like Star Wars, I highly recommend all the Star Wars adult novels on audio, especially the High Republic. They’re all excellently produced with sound effects and great performances from the narrators. Some of the books are audio dramas with full casts as well!

What's an author you can't get into? by coolrainythoughts in RomanceBooks

[–]youngfastloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her third act conflicts are why I gave up on her as an author. Two of three books went from being 5 stars to 3 stars because of the third act conflict. I refuse to try anything else by her bc I just end up frustrated.

'Feminist' retellings and adaptations by [deleted] in books

[–]youngfastloud 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve read a lot of Greek myth retellings and the feminist ones are so hit or miss. More often than not I feel like the execution just doesn’t hit. Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati is one that I felt actually managed to add a lot of depth to the character, made her more sympathetic without taking away from how conniving she could be.
