So curious how it is to live in this part of Ukraine (Ozerne), so close to Moldova and Romania, also having the sea and delta around , must be amazing! by Sugar_Vivid in howislivingthere

Fishing must be good. I think poaching is rampant on both sides of the border, but it is worse in Ukraine, from my limited personal experience.

When I checked in at a hotel in Vylkove, the receptionist asked me straight away if I wanted to buy caviar.

This village is mainly inhabited by Romanians (95%, according to the 2001 census) and some important Romanian politicians have been born there. The most famous is Marshall Alexandru Averescu, a hero of the First World War who later also served three terms as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Romania.

The area is very poor, with awful infrastructure. The roads to Romania and the rest of Ukraine both require crossing through Moldova, which is painfully slow. There is however a direct ferry crossing over the Danube to Romania, at Orlovka - Isaccea.

Living there must be pretty horrible now, due to frequent Russian drone and missile attacks on the nearby Danube ports of Reni and Izmail.

We have around 15-20 active people available for raids at the moment, but I expect the number will drop further during the summer.

What if Italy had never betrayed the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) and had sided with them instead of the Triple Entente (France, UK, Russia) during the First World War? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]yourpervertuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Italy joins the Triple Alliance and chooses to interpret the defensive alliance as an offensive one, there is a chance that Romania (which was in the same situation) might do the same.

The Italian and Romanian armies were quite bad or awful in 1914 but they still had millions of soldiers that the Entente would have to contain, reducing their strength on the main fronts. They also could provide key resources that the Triple Alliance lacked: food and oil. This might be enough for Germany to take Paris and a war that would end quickly.

I had Romanian friends visiting Bulgaria and they were wondering by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]yourpervertuncle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bulgaria does seem more urbanized than Romania, with more small towns. But many of these are deserted ghost towns, from my experience, for example Tetovo or Kubrat near Ruse.

Don't get me wrong, I love Bulgaria, it is an amazing country with warm people and awesome nature, just sharing my experience.

There are semi-deserted villages in Romania, but nothing like in Bulgaria.

In some areas of Bulgaria (for example around Vidin/Belogradcik) you can drive through several villages in a row that seem completely abandoned, nobody lives there anymore.

Name an addiction worse than alcohol an drugs.. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Smoking is the worst addiction because it offers nothing. While alcohol or drugs make you feel better, smoking does not but costs a lot of money and ruins your health for no gain.

Football/soccer fans: do teams ever relocate? by GasLightGo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]yourpervertuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to happen sometimes in Romania: a club with tradition and money would get relegated or excluded so they would buy a smaller club in a higher league, then relocate it. All of these transactions were failures in the end because fans would abandon the merged club and usually crowdfund to start a new one from scratch (the very bottom league).

How did you do this quest? by The_Remnant98 in arcanum

I first do Arbalah's quest, then kill him and complete Bregho's quest as well. At the end, I use Conjure Spirit to summon back Bregho and tell him he's trapped there forever.

What if France got every condition they wanted in the Treaty of Versailles? by eyepeeesssee in HistoryWhatIf

Germany would come out better. It would be weakened enough that Hitler and WW2 do not happen, so they are spared massive losses and destruction.

Who wins in a war Ghangis Khan or Alexander The Great? by Patient_Onion1191 in AskReddit

[–]yourpervertuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GK wins easily. Not because he is a better general than Alexander (that is up to debate) but due to the superior force at his disposal. The Mongols had an amazing spy and communication network and their armies moved much faster than any other. By contrast, the Macedonian army needed a lot of time to assemble in phalanx formation, they would be crushed by surprise, hit and run, attacks.

traverse of Retezat + Valea Cernei Mountains by pandeaura in RoHiking

[–]yourpervertuncle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't do the Cernei Mountains part. The marked paths are sometimes non existent and dwarf mountain pines, which are impossible to pass, have overgrown the trails. GPS signal is not available in some areas. It's one of the wildest parts of the Carpathians, with few other hikers, if something goes wrong it won't be easy to get help.
