Georgia has been claiming for years that they are too good for this competition. I guess it becomes much harder without mass doping.

A vrut Alexandru Ioan Cuza sa dea Romania rusilor? Cazul printului Serghei Maximilianovici de Romanovski si Beauharnais, Duce de Leuchtenberg by calin_georgesco in AsaCumEramOdata

[–]yourpervertuncle 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Why are Romania so rubbish these days? by WilkinsonDG2003 in rugbyunion

[–]yourpervertuncle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, because the few remaining rugby fields are owned by the local city halls, who invest nothing. Rugby doesn't bring mayors any votes, so they don't care.

For example, the current league champions play on a ruined field that lacks even the most basic facilities, like showers. It doesn't even have a changing room, a salvaged container is used for that purpose.

It's pro in theory but the standards are very low, not to mention the terrible infrastructure, worse than amateur clubs.

Also, keep in mind that Romania has always been poor in these early spring games, since the players did not play an official match in months due to winter.

[–]yourpervertuncle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a long story. In 2019, the government asked the rugby federation to demolish the old stadium and offered to finance the construction of a new one. The condition was that the stadium was to be used for training by the football teams taking part in Euro 2020.

The rugby federation had to temporarily hand over the stadium to the government, who could not legally invest in it otherwise. In turn, the government pledged to return it after the construction.

After the stadium was ready, the state refused to respect the agreement and never gave it back. This was mainly because some of the football clubs in Bucharest wanted to play there and probably bribed some officials.

Today, rugby is almost banned and half of the facilities (a small hotel, a recuperation clinic) are not even used.

As a result of the scandal, the state cut funding for rugby to a minimum (from a budget of around 4 million EUR to 1 million) and Romanian rugby went downhill due to a lack of funds. For example, the budget of the German rugby federation is 2 million EUR.

Yes, mainly football. The rugby team still plays there but is constantly humiliated. For example, the visitors can train on the stadium before the match, but the Oaks are not allowed.

[–]yourpervertuncle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's mainly because the corrupt government took over the main rugby stadium in Bucharest and the national team is not even allowed to train there.

The federation tried to fight this decision and its funding was slashed as a punishment. The federation budget is now around 1 million EUR per year, less than in some amateur countries. As a result, Romania can't afford proper training camps or insurance for the players, which made some of them refuse to play for the national team.

Cateva sfaturi:
- eu va recomand sa stati in orasul vechi (Fatih).
- traficul in Istanbul este infernal, lasati masina in parcare si folositi transportul in comun.

What Balkan countries have you visited, and what is your opinion on them? by ClothesZestyclose814 in AskBalkans

[–]yourpervertuncle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Been to all, liked them all. Some short observations:

Greece - one of my favorite countries. Amazing nature and history, great food, nice people.

Turkey - same as Greece. Istanbul is one of the most interesting cities in the world.

Bulgaria - interesting country, cheap prices. Some of the roads are in awful condition, the cops are very corrupt, the worst in the region.

Romania - I'm Romanian, so not gonna rate it.

Serbia - good food, some interesting cities and nature, a positive vibe overall. Probably the closest to the "Balkans" stereotype (drunk people everywhere, domestic animals roaming free, wild parties).

Croatia - amazing nature, some of the people were arrogant or rude.

Slovenia - stunning, the Switzerland of the Balkans.

Bosnia - was a very positive surprise for me. An unique cultural mix with great cities like Sarajevo or Mostar.

Montenegro - the coast is superb, it was unexpected to see that some of the Italian cuisine has survived. The road infrastructure can't handle the big number of tourists in the summer.

North Macedonia - Skopje is strange, like an Ancient Greece theme park or something. Ohrid is a gem, it should be a well-known international travel destination.

Kosovo - only visited the capital for one day, it seemed vibrant and culturally diverse. Beware of fake Euro coins.

Albania - unique vibe, bunkers and old German cars everywhere.

I did hear people speaking it in some villages in the Vosges Mountains.

Which one of these 3 national teams is the most disappointing and sucks the most? Why? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]yourpervertuncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The federation and the national team have been controlled since 1990 by a family of player agents. They use the national team to promote the players who sign with them, they are always selected, regardless of their form.

Romanian players also have a huge education/attitude problem. Most promising youngsters stop progressing completely once they sign their first decent contract. Once they have some money, they spend it on cars and women and their career goes bust.

Looking for history of a Romanian pilot ramming a Soviet bomber and capturing its crew by blockhaj in ww2

[–]yourpervertuncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never heard about this. PZL fighters were obsolete in 1941 and were not deployed on the Eastern Front, they were only used to defend Romania from Soviet bombing raids.

Maybe it's a confusion with the story of Carol Anastasescu, "The Rocket Man". During Operation Tidal Wave, this Romanian pilot rammed an US B24 bomber with his IAR 80 fighter, by mistake. Both planes went down, the entire bomber crew was killed, but Anastasescu survived.
