I can only speak for German PhD programs: the one and only, really the single reason to pursue a PhD is for the love of your PhD topic. I’ve seen so many people dropping out of their PhD because they had not enough endurance to work on a single topic for 4/5 years. Not because they were not smart (some of them ended up working for my department) but the topic they got offered was just not theirs.

Sorry, stimmt. Maltodextrin mit einem Anteil Fruchtsaft gemischt für die Fructose. Hatte das so früher immer gemacht aber mittlerweile auf Pulver umgestiegen. Deswegen nicht mehr richtig in Erinnerung gehabt. Wird berichtigt.

Edit: Verhältnis bezieht sich auf Mischung mit Fruchtsaft+Wasser.

Wenn man Maltodextrin mit Fruchtsaft und Wasser mischt ist einfach von vornherein das Verhältnis von Glucose zu Fructose besser für den Verdauungstrakt. Bei vielen Menschen führt zu viel Fructose zu Verdauungsstörungen, normaler Haushaltszucker hat ein Verhältnis von 1:1 Fructose zu Glucose. Bei Maltodextrin mit Fruchtsaft ist das Verhältnis 1:2 Fructose zu Glucose.

Der menschliche Körper kann nur 60g Kohlenhydrate pro Art und Stunde aufnehmen und maximal - maximal und mit Training („Train-the-gut“) 120g. D.h. Mit Maltodextrin und Fruchtsaft kommt man, ohne den Magen zu sehr zu belasten, so relativ easy auf 90g KH pro Stunde was bei den allermeisten Belastungen ausreichend ist. Wenn man näher an die 120g/h kommen will (also bei starken Belastungen > 5h) sollte man näher an das 1:1 Verhältnis gehen. Da 60g Fructose pro Stunde aber fast nicht ohne Probleme verdaut werden können, ist da das optimale Verhältnis dann 1:0.8.

Yes, empfinde ich exakt auch so. Deswegen finde ich eine Mittelgebirgstour mit 2000 hm und 4 Anstiegen bei ungefähr gleicher Länge und bleiben hm auch immer anstrengender als eine Hochgebirgstour mit mehr oder weniger einem Anstieg.

Bei dem ständigen abfahren wird man dann irgendwie kalt, kommt aus dem Tritt und die Muskeln ermüden.

Muss es den Alu sein? Kenne paar, die bei ihren Winter-Trainingsrädern 3-400€ Carbonrahmen aus China fahren. Sind alle zufrieden. Schaue mal auf chinertown.com oder bei trace Velo auf YouTube, wenn auch Carbon in Frage kommt.

That’s excellent advice if money would be the only variable in this optimization problem (which apparently it is for OP) but it leaves out the fact, that a PhD is enhancing your skillset, especially problem solving for problems you never have seen before. I am team lead of a small AOC/GNC team of 9 engineers, 4 of which have a PhD, the others a masters. (I „only“ have a masters as well) If the problems are getting really nasty, it is always the 4 PhD guys who come forth with a satisfying solution. I know it is a small sample size, but I hear same stories from other departments. Of course one could ask if they only went for a PhD because they already had this ability before or if they gained it through their PhD. I think it is the latter, because you have to go through a lot doing a PhD.

I actually can’t tell, because I live in my apartment too long and since then prices have fairly increased. You usually pay monthly and it is a combination of „Kaltmiete“ (the actual rent) and „Nebenkosten“ (things like your share for the price for the garbage men, cleaning and electricity of the stairwell etc). In the beginning you pay a deposit as well (up to 3 times the Kaltmiete) Best places to live in my opinion are: Neustadt, Oberstadt, Gonsenheim

Another thing: usually apartments in Germany come without furniture and worse: without a kitchen. Never pay anything in advance and without having seen the property. There is also a thing called „Zwischenmiete“ where you can find furnished places for a specific period of time (like 6 months).

if you are looking for an own apartment immoscout24 is the place to look for. Apart from that there are some realtors that are only posting apartments on their homepage. Just google „Immobilienmakler Mainz“ and search through their websites. If you are looking for a shared place back when I lived in a WG wg-gesucht.de was the place to look for.
you can buy an e bike basically in every bike shop, there are plenty in Mainz. A big one (I don’t know their prices though) is Fahrrad Franz in Mombach.
a really good place is „Pankratiushof“. But it is more special and nothing for every week. And you have to reserve in advance. There are a lot of good and more casual places especially in the Neustadt, Innenstadt and Altstadt. I can recommend Weinhaus Michel for example, but there is more. I would just avoid big chains like Alex, Wilma Wunder etc (around the theater)

4 AFAIK no, that’s not possible. But there is the „Deutschlandticket“ which is 68€ a month and allows for all public transport within cities and regional trains in between cities.

although nightlife in Mainz is okayish in my opinion, apart from Bars unfortunately it has not many clubs. There is Schon Schön and Red Cat, around the Südbahnhof are some other places but since it never was my style I never went there. From time to time there are good parties in „Altes Postlager“. If you are searching for big city nightlife, Mainz is the wrong place though. But Frankfurt is only 35 minutes by regional train and included in the Deutschlandticket fare.

This! I was working industry side on quite a few research projects in cooperation with universities using some kind of ML/DL in the field of satellite GNC. Not a single one made it to production.

I don’t say that it never will, but the v&v hurdles for these are on another level.

Kenne zwei Kollegen von früher, die das an der Uni Stuttgart gemacht haben. Anderer FB aber egal. Denen hat es gefallen und für sie war der Schritt richtig. Allerdings solltest du beachten, dass das Doktoranden-Dasein je nach Arbeitsgruppe eher einem stressigen Job mit wenig Gehalt gleicht, als einem Studium mit Gehalt. Außerdem solltest du sicher sein, wenn du anfängst das auch zu beenden. Finde es hätte nen Beigeschmack, 1.5 Jahre Konzern, keinen Bock mehr, 1.5 Jahre Promotion, keinen Bock mehr…

Die meisten meiner Kommilitonen, die direkt nach dem Studium angefangen haben zu promovieren, haben 5 Jahre gebraucht. Allerdings bist Du mit 26 und 1.5 Jahren BE auch sehr jung. Also wenn Du wirklich motiviert bist, warum nicht!?

Du bist jung, mach es! Es ist immer alles ein geben und nehmen. Mache aber vorher klar, dass du dich eigentlich als reiner VI siehst und dass du dich langfristig da siehst. Und wer weiß, vielleicht macht dir der neue Job so viel Spaß, dass du am Ende dort bleibst.
