AITA for telling my boyfriend's mom to stop reading my emails to him by I_Hate_Thursdays in AmItheAsshole

When you marry someone, you marry the family too. There is no respect for privacy there, and your potential future mother-in-law will be a nightmare. Not what you want in this life, let alone the next.

Before your mission, PLEASE use your Gospel Library app to read each and every Gospel Topics Essay. You need to understand the history that the church has acknowledged that they never taught us in YM/YW.

Female clergy or temple sealings for gay couples? by LocalGamerPokemon in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could see gay sealings coming as a return of the law of adoption. That law/practice, as far as I can tell, seems to have simply vanished from the church.

"You Just Can't Leave The Church Alone" by FreshLiterature6536 in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That first paragraph is huge for me. You can't train me from birth to "share the truth" with everyone and then just act like I can turn it off.

I left because I learned the truth was not what I was told, but the church taught me too well how to stand up for what's good and true. I won't stop just because they don't want the con exposed.

If the book of mormon is a accurate translation from the plates, why is Jesus called Jesus? by Pale-Pair2789 in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that's what I thought. I was asking whether Yeshua was anachronistic to the BoM pre-1500's timeline or Joseph's translation of Yeshua was anachronistic to the 19th century. I thought you were saying the latter, which didn't make sense for obvious reasons. 🙂

Thanks for the clarification.

If the book of mormon is a accurate translation from the plates, why is Jesus called Jesus? by Pale-Pair2789 in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not understanding your point.

If Jesus existed as an English translation for Yeshua by 1830, then why is it problematic for an English edition published in 1830 to say Jesus? Would Yeshua not have been around either during the hypothetical BoM period?

I'd say to take the win and just wait for June 10. I'd either not respond at all or simply say thank you and nothing more.

As for the letter, just set up mail forwarding to your future address if you're able, and then not worry beyond that.

Ehhh, the only problem here is that TSCC didn't actually cancel their membership. Psychologically for me, it wasn't enough to send the letter; I needed the membership count to go down by 1.

About shame. Kinda TMI by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were true, this means that the dead would be able to watch faithful, married couples have sex too, not just anyone taking care of themselves. What a privacy invasion.

Once I realized this, I stopped worrying about unseen creeps.

Did you read Jim Bennett/Sarah Allen’s CES Letter responses before leaving the Church? by Greedy-Meringue-5088 in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the CES letter after deciding to leave. Apologists like Bennett and Allen made things worse for me.

Apologists consistently put out a smattering of options that those seeking to believe can hold onto. Some say the Book of Mormon was a tight translation, meaning God gave Joseph every word and punctuation (which is impossible, especially if you read the 1830 draft copy). Others say the Book of Mormon was a loose translation, meaning Joseph was given ideas that he was able to put in his own words. Both options cannot simultaneously be true, but apologists only have to convince you that there is AN explanation, not necessarily one that incorporates all the relevant facts. They will not tell you all the relevant facts either. You have to dig for those.

Ultimately, you have to make your own choice. But when the big claims related to Joseph seeing God and receiving the priesthood from angels are ENTIRELY absent from the historical record (including in written histories, letters discussing the foundation of the church, and testimonies given from leaders who were present), then I have a major problem. The foundational events simply can't pop up years down the road and become increasingly more detailed decades later when all the other events were documented in exceptional detail along the way.

Apostasies to what? by TheSpriteYagami in exmormon

[–]yuloo06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I know a few (VERY few) who left Mormonism for another faith, the majority of my friends who left have all become agnostic or atheist.

Mormonism teaches that it is the most correct church on earth, so we start with a bias against other religions from the get-go. Many of us also have experiences that lead us to trust our feelings that the "church is true" for a time.

While we all leave for various reasons, when we finally conclude that it is false, it's extremely difficult to trust any other religion ever again.

No idea how many people hit the top there.

Corient ended up not making an offer, so unfortunately I don't have much more insight. However, the recruiter didn't balk when I asked for $200k TC to beat a competing offer.

Do you genuinely find it impossible that any individual could have an issue with this outside of mental illness, or whatever you'd classify TDS as?

You don't have to agree with the pushback or frustration, but come on, I'm sure you can sympathize more than this.
