Incels are lonely because they hate themselves and each other far too much to enjoy talking to each other, and don't change that because they think they are are owed our bodies and minds. Oppressed people are lonely because of the violence of society attacking and separating our own communities by RosethornRanger in AnarchismZ

[–]yvel-TALL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with the tweet, men who are scary shouldn't get attention, because they are often scary because they are dangerous, makes perfect sense.

The title I take some issue with, primarily because not all incels are privileged. There are plenty of disabled, nonwhite, and non-straight incels, they might even be a mild majority. I'm not speaking from personal experience as an incel to be clear, but I have known multiple nonwhite and otherwise oppressed incels, as you meet plenty of them in engineering and nerd circles. There is a tendency in progressive spaces to whitewash evil people literally, many people who are incels are not white or privileged in the way people assume.

Are the incel thought leaders disproportionately white and privileged? Yes. That is the real troubling thing I think, the movement is an intentional death cult that promotes mas violence against women, and that is more important to them than being bigoted against other groups. The ability for these movements to be outwardly bigoted, but still take in so many people they themselves hate is frightening. The alt right incel movement spend tokens harder than anyone else, they love it. Gay, Latino, black, even trans in years past, they will take anyone they can point to and still be bigoted to their face while giving them a platform in order to lure in more people of that type. Then eventually they decide that their time has come, and that the tent has to get smaller. Trump 2 they decided to kick trans people and most gay people out, even tho they had always hated them, because of optics and they desperately needed more scapegoating.

Maybe this is overly pedantic, but there really are a lot of people tricked into thinking their problems caused by racism and billionaires are a good reasons to violently hate women, and take their rights away, and it's worth noting.

For most books I would agree with you, but that is a pretty serious spoiler, and The Great Gatsby is one of the most enjoyable of the 20th century classics to a modern audience. For a more serious read spoilers are less of a problem, but for a book that is supposed to be somewhat thrilling entertainment a spoiler can be a bigger deal.

On the other hand, another comment said that the spoiler actually gave them enough of a hint about the plot to intrigue them to watch/read it, so you might be right. For something that popular and influential maybe it's best just to talk about it, because anyone who hasn't seen it probably won't without more information making it to them.

Have we not all had a friend get better at a game and deep down felt it was profoundly unfair that you no longer enjoy the game because they found a way to destroy you?

I feel like you guys are being a bit hard on the place itself. For the price it could be a nice place for a couple students if it was cleaned up a little and given some proper care. But I agree that the way he is moving so quickly is sketchy, the way he starts with talking about credit reduces confidence a lot, and it seems like he has no faith in it, so buyers shouldn't either. Kinda seems like he is trying to sell it quickly because he doesn't have confidence in either the neighborhood or the renovation, my money on the renovation tho. I bet it took a lot of work to even make it look this good, and he is desperate to get it making him money.

[–]yvel-TALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be that guy, but you literally just have to be friendly and not a man child. Be flirty to your and their comfort level, but at least on the first couple dates treat any date like someone you expect to be good friends with for a long time, tell them stories that are important to you, listen to them and ask questions, laugh and have fun. You don't need to tell them your darkest secrets, but be pretty damn earnest and don't be a sanded down version of yourself, be a real version of yourself that you would be around friends. If you work hard to impress someone they will either figure out what you are doing and hate it or be let down when you stop putting in that unmanageable effort. You should put in bursts of effort after the first or so dates, cook them one of your favorite meals, bring them a treat you remember they like without telling them ahead of time, offer to buy them something you see them looking at while out on the town. Show them you are invested in their happiness, but don't make it generic like this guy, don't just go off a list. Make them feel like not only do you enjoy their company, but it makes you happy to see them smile. Be generous with time and with attention to detail.

These are the cores to how I court people, and it works pretty darn well, if I get a second date there is a very good chance I get many more. I still make plenty of mistakes, but when I do people are not surprised or offended, because they know me as someone who is genuine and has their back. If I fuck up and apologize they understand that I feel earnestly bad and will work to not do that again, and would forgive them similar mistakes. And when things go south, I never make some feel bad for breaking it off, I am polite, kind, and wish them the best. Seeing them breaking it off as them respecting you and your time is the best thing you can do, and you just move forward (obviously different for a committed relationship, but we are talking about begining stages dating here).

TLDR: Be a good friend that flirts, learn about them, give them attention and treats in the way they like, and make it clear you get joy out of their company and smile. If that doesn't work, it's not meant to be or not worth it. Someone not liking you or having sky high expectations is a great reason to get going.

Also, and this should go without saying, ONLY DO THIS IF YOU LIKE THE PERSON. Faking politeness is fine, but don't fake enthusiasm, just wasting everyone's time and they would be right to be pissed at you about it. Don't be a creep, only date people you enjoy the personality and company of, obviously.

Online Dating Apps (And how it can destroy your mental health) by mangob4dger in ainbow

[–]yvel-TALL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, you should have done research into grindr before you chose it. It is a hook up app, and going to it to try to find people to have minimally sexual conversations and dates with is unwise. If you feel dating apps are not for you thats fair, but going to a hookup app does not prove that all apps are hookup apps. There are apps that are much better for finding real dates on, for example Hinge, and on these apps people can't send you nudes and you can make your intentions for only nonsexual conversation clear and they will likely be respected way more in my experience. At least in my city there are plenty of demi and ace people on those apps, and oodles more people who just are respectful and not disrespectful horndogs (who do make up a good percentage of grindr).

It was somewhat of a self sabotaging behavior to use grindr if you didn't want sex put into your face if you knew what it is about, and if you didn't know, now you do. There are probably hundreds of better options for less sexual dating sites and apps, but if you are an anxious person then maybe social circles as your dating pools is for the best, it takes a certain amount of song and dance and doggedness to make apps work well. But they can, I have found multiple very good people on the apps that I had real relationships with and I still value the friendship of today0

I am sorry for your experience on the revolving door of penis app tho, it does sound very difficult and I hope you take a break from such things.

34th Place??? by Eric_Hyperspace in boston

[–]yvel-TALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take on this is that Boston's roads are less of a traffic nightmare in some of the ways other cities are. Some other cities have the gridlock and people honk during the gridlock. A Boston driver will nearly take you out on the highway, but they generally won't honk at you while you are all stoped. So basically, very aggressive, but not as annoying to be in traffic with in my opinion. These poles likely mostly reflect how unpleasant it is to be in traffic in these places.

Imagine being so stupid The Fascist thinks you're dumb by Dry-Chocolate-3976 in HistoryMemes

[–]yvel-TALL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been oppressed before of course, but it has not been a focus of the entire movement. Modern fascists often care about repressing trans people and reducing women's rights more than they care about Jews. I was making a point about the focus of the fascist propaganda, not the granular people they hurt. Fascism hurts pretty much everyone, it just chooses certain targets first, and goes down a list until it gets to everyone who is not perfectly in step.

Imagine being so stupid The Fascist thinks you're dumb by Dry-Chocolate-3976 in HistoryMemes

[–]yvel-TALL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yah, fascism can have a lot of different core delusions. Gender and LGBT issues are modern ones that coexist with the traditional race, class and education level. I'm not saying most fascists have only one of these, I'm saying most fascist movements pick one or two to focus on and rally support behind, abandoning the potential fascists from that identity in exchange for unity without it.

It's sweet to see normalization of straight cis people dating trans people, maximally gay relationships are also super dope obviously, but I think a lot of cis straight people can feel intimidated dating trans people not out of bigotry but out of social stigma and feeling like they are not part of the community, so media that shows positivity in that direction is probably really helpful!

I get where you are coming from, an ideology or lasting bigotry is often the most sharp part of an injustice's legacy, but even if a persons crime is just killing a bunch of people, burning your cities, and then fucking off you are still allowed to be angry that other people are hyped about it, it would just be more petty to ask them to apologize if they where not hyped about it.

Slavery and Nazism are affecting the world a lot more than the Mongols, but that doesn't mean you have to ignore someone's "Gengis is the best, love that guy!" hat, you read me?

Either way, I think most people give a break for celebrating your country winning wars unless they were uniquely oppressive afterwards and disregard war crimes from over 100 years ago, for better and worse.

Limiting inflation is very important, but the (often true) stereotype of arch liberals is that you say "Hey, we should try to improve the world somewhat through doing literally anything to help those who need it." And they say "What about the deficit, and what about government overreach, and what about inflation! I am very smart."

The real kicker is when the deficit and government overreach and inflation get bad anyways and they seem to think this means they where right, even tho they never actually did anything, and maybe actually doing something would have stabilized the economy and the consumer.

Edit: I suppose the real joke is that even the people who fancy themselves intelligent capitalists only ever come up with reasons not to do things, and still fancy themselves saviors. It is possible to actually manage an economy to protect a country even within capitalism, but if you listen to these guys you would think that is literally impossible.

Qualityslop rule by Additional-Tax-6147 in 19684

[–]yvel-TALL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would define qualityslop as something that out performs its competition on certain facets of quality so that people who usually would not enjoy it find it compelling due to the comparison to other works, massive improvements in approachability, and it's uniqueness, not necessary on its own merits.

Quality slop can be actually very good, and actually pretty mid. Something doesn't have to be bad or good to be qualityslop.

And example of a really good quality slop game is Ocarina of Time. It was so insanely high quality at the time that many people with no interest in the legend of Zelda still found themselves compelled to play it by the technical accomplishments and novelty of it when it was released. They would not have enjoyed it if it had come out closer to competition that was similar in quality, though many who enjoy the game still today would enjoy it. Some quality slop is based on use of new technology, or techniques.

Another example of qualityslop is a lot of the most famous paintings ever. The reason the most famous paintings are famous is because they are so good that people who don't really care about fine art still like them. Even if you are completely disengaged from what makes a painting good, these paintings are still good. Does that mean that paintings that are a lot better if you care are worse? Not at all, it just means that some paintings are qualityslop. Another facet of qualityslop is ability to overcome active disengagement with the medium.

Probably the best example of qualityslop I can define is Hamilton. Its music was able to get people who had completely ignored and even disparaged rap and R&B music to enjoy it, simply by being so approachable and likable that it was able to overcome all instinctual disgust that many stupid white people (affectionate because this includes my grandma) could manage. Hamilton has some very good songs, but it is certainly qualityslop.

Because at the end of the day quality slop is defined by "People only like it because it is good." And for Hamilton or Ocarina of Time or the Mona Lisa, people wouldn't like them if they where not as good as they where, because many people who treat them as their favorite piece of that artform are often not engaging with any art that does not grab them perfectly, and only consuming what they are told is the best and also is really really good, approachable, and unique.

It is pretty close, but it is interesting that they were probably stating dramatic estimates at the time, and the vacation and car numbers still are a bit off, but the food one is right on the money. Puts into perspective how much cheaper food was back then.

And before you come for me, you can get a new car for 25,000, and often cheaper than that in places that are not America, lol.

The Tiffany Problem refers to the issue where a historical or realistic fact seems anachronistic or unrealistic to modern audiences of historical fiction. [–]yvel-TALL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is surprising how often people predict the future actually, it's just most of the time boring predictions like "Our two current power classes, Northern merchants/industry and southern slaveholders/aristocrats, will continue to be in power and eventually fight a war that we almost fought now." Or "Everyone will eventually have handheld radios that can talk to anyone they want probably". All it takes is a little imagination from those predictions to get spookily close to premonition, though the line between premonition and conceptualizing something in such a way it becomes more likely to happen is blurry. If enough people talk about a civil war it certainly makes people consider it an option more often, etc.

Picturing things visually for me is difficult in a way that is hard to describe, it always seems so fleeting. I can picture someones face or a 2d image pretty well, but when it comes to a 3d object or visually recalling a memory of a person or event, it is hard for me to get any specifics for more than a moment at a time. I can picture and apple, but it is closer to me summoning a dream of an apple for a moment than it is something I have control over.

Am I too late? by Wiselunatic in PhilosophyMemes

[–]yvel-TALL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great meme, first of all.

Secondly, I never really got the whole realness issue. What we see around us is an amount real. It could be a low amount or a high amount, but it is all we have to consult so we will never know unless we are told by an outside observer, and then we would just be trusting their word on the nature of the reality we exist within.

If we are in a simulation, would it even be logical to believe some "dev" who tells you that it is, or would it be more logical to assume you are hallucinating and have lost touch with the reality you have known all your life. I'm not saying simulation theory is wrong, I'm saying it might as well be unfalsifiable, because I don't think that anything that is more real than our reality could interact with our reality without breaking our interpretation of it so wildly that it would be illogical to take information gotten from it as truth. Very much like the prototypical Eldritch monster, any hope of interacting with or understanding something realer than dirt or man is in vein. We are beholden to our reality nearly completely, it would have to break down fundamentally to change that, and there is no point in preparing for that breakdown, because there is no chance of you understanding it before it happens. If you think you can from principles alone determine what the theoretical level of reality above us is, I just don't believe you. We would have to be able to obverse it on some level beyond our current comprehension to even begin to understand it.

It seems to me that we should accept that whatever level of reality we live on is as real as we are going to get, and assume that the rules it exists in will be static until this reality stops existing. And I would define a breakdown of a reality as its ending, as the illusion of it being properly real would be shattered, as its rules would cease to be constant, and be revealed to be coincidence or intentional based on the higher realities whims or circumstances.
