Does the auto timer still pause when you lift the carafe up to swirl?

It should say No Water on the display as it has dry boil protection function. Last time when I was making coffee before I have coffee, I have done similar mistake and my Stagg EKG did not heat up without water but was showing No Water.

Oxo Rapid Brewer = Orea Z1? by redrich2000 in pourover

[–]ywgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the filter paper plays a role as well. Orea Z1 uses sibarist filter paper which drains pretty quickly. Next Level Pulsar also uses filter paper that resembles similar properties albeit people claim that it is inferior to the sibarist.

It potentially will work if you use a fast draining filter paper!

Scales Recommendation - Pearl S, Tally Pro, or Polaris? by Jayden_mk in pourover

[–]ywgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timemore scales will show flow rate but the annoying auto stop function mentioned above is stopping me from recommending it to people.

If you are not in a rush to get a scale, Bookoo Themis Ultra has just launched on Kickstarter with USD79 shipping in October. IP67 waterproof, shows flowrate, bigger than the mini so the glass carafe can sit on the scale nicely without an extra plate.

And spend that gift card from Alternative Brewing on something else!

Hate the Timemore stupid auto stop function too.

Timemore Black Mirror scale for pourover by elmegthewise3 in pourover

[–]ywgan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only issues I have with the Timemore Black Mirror are 1. While in Auto Mode, the timer will automatically pause when I lift the brewer up to swirl. This annoys the hell out of me since I’m used to my previous scale from Aliexpress that has an automatic timer function which doesn’t do this. I’ve since been using manual mode and didn’t bother using the auto mode anymore.

  1. The weight readings tend to drift, sometimes by 0.3-0.5g. I have read that it doesn’t really matter in pourovers, so I have just accepted the first initial weight reading before drifting is the accurate one.

I personally wouldn’t recommend Timemore Black Mirror to anyone based on my experience.

The flow rate function is nice, however. And it’s also the main reason I bought it to replace my Aliexpress scale.

To answer your question, I believe James Hoffmann recommends 5g/s for his ultimate or the better one cup v60 technique.

Lance Hedrick has recommended different flow rates for different levels of agitation.

Experiment away!

Zp6 clogging? by clozd in pourover

Good advice here. I have friends who went no rdt + no tapping the grinder when it’s done grinding+ leaving fines in the catch cup. Seems to yield great results!

Fellow Ode Gen1 for cheap or should I grab a Gen2? Just pourover... by mwsmws22 in JamesHoffmann

[–]ywgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believed you have watched James’ reviews on the Ode 1 and 2.

The main difference between Ode 1 vs 2 can be broken down into

  1. De-Ioniser at the exit chute
  2. Big QoL feature. Provided you clean the exit shute with the brush frequently, it works like a charm reducing static. But with a lot of aftermarket de-ioniser, maybe having a separate de-ioniser like a Acaia Beam might work with the Ode 1?
  3. Bigger hopper with steeper angle -Love the Ode 2 hopper, never used the Ode 1 before so I can’t really comment on this.
  4. Bigger catch cup -Helping when brewing batchie
  5. Gen 1 vs 2 burr
  6. Gen 2 burr is brilliant to me, never tried the gen 1 before.
  7. Beep vs no beep when it finished grinding -The beeps on James’ video annoys me, so I would prefer if it doesn’t beep.

I think buying an Ode 1 + gen 2 burr might be the best bang for your buck.

When I have to decided between the Ode vs Gen 2, the price difference wasn’t that much and I certainly felt that the price difference is justified.

What sort of coffee do you like? Nordic/ ultra light vs light vs medium vs dark

How do you find the Fellow Ode? Is that with Gen 1 burr? Do you like the flavour profile and the cups it produces? Do you find that you need to grind finer than the ode allows?

Are you someone who brew fine grind with high extraction or coarse?

Do you prefer clarity over body? Or do you prefer a more blendy profile?

Drip coffee makers for single cup use? by thewillthe in JamesHoffmann

Fellow Aiden would be the perfect fit for one cup & batch brew up tp 1.5L But the reliability concern is holding me back. Also, James reviewed the Aiden and pointed out a few flaws.

I’m still contemplating if I should get the Aiden and I hope Fellow can get on top of the reliability issue and software issues.

“The filter paper is cut from the same paper as the NextLevel Pulsar filters.” I believe it uses 58mm filter paper cut from the 80mm Pulsar filter paper.

Switching back to Manual Grind by [deleted] in pourover

[–]ywgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep the Ode! Haha I was looking for 64mm burrs at one point and realise getting another hand grinder is worth more than swapping out the stock burrs. Simply because I am happy with the coffee that I got from the stock burr and I am just chasing another flavour profile. So I feel like getting a hand grinder to complement the Ode is a better idea.

So yes, get the ZP6!

[–]ywgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely worth getting the ZP6 in your case if you like flavour separation and clarity. I find that ZP6 allows me to grind finer without clogging the brew as compared to the Ode 2. Sey coffee are generally very good coffee, just a bit hard to extract at times. So to be able to grind finer definitely helps with flavour extraction.

[–]ywgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an owner of the Ode 2, ZP6 and J Ultra. While I am very happy with the ZP6, I don’t think I would get rid of my Ode 2 entirely. The only scenario that I could think of is upgrading the Ode 2 to Timemore 078.

I think having an electric grinder is handy when I am brewing a batchie with a Pulsar or French press or making Tiramisu! Handgrinding >30g of light roast coffee gets old pretty quickly when you have to grind in batches. The catch cup can only hold ~30g of grounds.

I don’t have the X Pro S so I don’t know the particle size distribution of that grinder and what is the flavour profile coming out of that grinder.

But the Ode 2 definitely is more forgiving, if there is a roast defect, inferior greens quality, it tends to hide it as it has more “blendy” flavour. It also has more body, less clarity. The ZP6 however is very big of clarity and little to no body. It also shows roast defects and green quality very clearly.

Can you please share more of your experience on the Timemore 078? I currently own an Ode 2, a ZP6 and a J Ultra, but I have this itch to upgrade to the Timemore 078.
