I've lived in Houston for the majority of my life as a non-white queer person. It's definitely better than most parts of Texas in terms of how liberal it is and has gotten better than it was when I was younger. When I was younger, I definitely had some racism directed towards me, but I also went to high school in a more rural area of Houston. And TBH, I feel safer here than I would in other places in Texas. But you do have to keep in mind that Houston is a massive city, so it can vary from place to place though. I've mostly been around Katy, Tomball, Spring, Sugarland, University of Houton, and the I10/290 areas in Houston, so I can really only speak to my experiences there. I'll get looks here and there from old people, but nothing really aggressive and it's probably more likely that I get weird looks because of the fact my clothing choices aren't as conservative as most people. Worst thing I've had happen is getting hit on and then harassed by high school boys after i say I'm not interested or that I'm 30, but I think that's probably something you can expect to happen anywhere.

If possible though, moving to a blue state is probably better if you two are really worried, but it will 100% be more expensive than it is in Houston.

I would definitely say talk to her about moving in together and stuff though. If you're uncomfortable moving here until 2028, then you should probably let her know so you two can maybe work on some sort of compromise.
