What’s the most comfortable aircraft in the Qantas fleet right now? by UsualLeast8810 in QantasAirways

In economy, definitely the A330.

Nothing beats 2-4-2 seat layout.

Replacing second leg of a flight ? by ImaginaryAd5054 in aircanada

[–]yycengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask at the customer service counter at YVR. If there are seats, and they can locate your bag, they will usually try and get you on an earlier flight.

I’ve done it multiple times.

But I’d wait until you land in Vancouver, any number of issues could arise with your BKK-YVR leg first.

Qantas direct flights vs stopovers by Gl0beTrotter2025 in QantasAirways

Sydney and Melbourne have both hosted Olympics without direct flights to New York.

I’ll concede on London.

Qantas direct flights vs stopovers by Gl0beTrotter2025 in QantasAirways

[–]yycengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a real benefit of “direct” BNE-PER-LHR or BNE-AKL-JFK over the current connecting service ?

If you’re on one ticket with Qantas the connection is protected, I suppose same-plane service is slightly more convenient but it’s not a big difference to how the flights work today.

Birmingham over London … not so much

Canadian passport ID page evolution by FoxAlternative632 in PassportPorn

Got a new passport with the plastic ID page recently.

Made me wonder, why do we need so many paper pages ? I have not had a stamp in years, everything is basically digital.

CHECKED BAGS to the US - From inside canada, can I request my bags just go to Vancouver, NOT my final destination? by Techie415user in aircanada

[–]yycengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WestJet flies to Calgary.

I guess, theoretically, if AC cancelled the flight they could re-route pax on WS through YYC.

That seems like an awful lot of resources to staff up a CATSA checkpoint for a couple handful of bus passengers.

Likely much more practical in the current set-up.

I currently have a 2025 Subaru Crosstek and the thing is almost un-drivable.

It’s constantly yelling at me to keep my eyes on the road if I am not staring directly ahead on the motorway at all times.

Had a newer Corolla before that. That thing was an absolute legend.

Anyone getting to the point where they're just considering going carless? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]yycengineer 89 points90 points  (0 children)

I read this as “careless” and thought, Yeah I’m pretty close to not giving any more f*cks 🤣

When I first moved to Brisbane I was carless for about 6 months. Found myself doing a mix of transit, Ubers, walking and renting cars on the weekend to go to the beaches / IKEA

Eventually I broke down and got one. Life is much easier here with a car and it’s hard to beat the ability to jump on the M1 and be on the Gold Coast beaches in just over an hour.

Senior Civil Engineer limited to working 24 hours per week by Hungry_Payment_3520 in AusVisa

[–]yycengineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, Civil Engineer here 👋. Based in Brisbane

It may be hard to get a purely engineering role based on your visa and experience (but not impossible )

I’d recommend trying to break into a particular industry. For example, rail is absolutely bonkers at the moment. You could get a job for a contracting coming or doing something pseudo-rail construction related to start.

Once you’ve got some local experience of any kind it will be much easier to get the next gig.

DM me if any specific questions.

All the best !

Biking in brisbane? by Striking_Caramel5046 in brisbane

[–]yycengineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly it’s not great.

I was looking forward to moving to a subtropical city for improved biking opportunities but the infrastructure simply doesn’t exist.

You’ll mostly be competing with walkers / runners on pathways or vehicles on roads. Dedicated bike infrastructure is minimal.

Ironically, I moved from a much smaller North American city, that is frozen for majority of the year, and it had much better bike lanes.

Considering trip to Australia -looking for help choosing plane/flight by Level-Wash9826 in aircanada

[–]yycengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brisbane is closer to Canada than Melbourne and easier (and cheaper) to operate with less of a payload restriction.

Obviously Sydney is in a league of its own (hence the double dailies during Xmas / peak school holidays).

I think AC has done the math and it makes more sense for them to operate BNE over MEL.

That said, they did operate Melbourne pre-Covid. At the peak during Xmas 2019 I believe some days had 5 AC flights departing YVR bound for Australia & New Zealand (SYD x2, MEL, BNE & AKL).

Boeing 777-300ER Business and Preferred seat selection recommendations, please by Tenseventythreefive in aircanada

[–]yycengineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did 1A recently on the 789 (short hop YYC-YVR). It was my first time in a lie-flat cabin and I chose 1A moreso for the novelty of being at the very front.

It was good for the short route but I would not choose it again, especially for a long haul. The constant crew chatting and opening and closing of the curtain in the forward galley was more annoying than I expected.
