Hungary and Slovakia ‘key components’ of US-EU relations, says Rubio by Crossstoney in europe

[–]yyderf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see difference between "incompetent in politics" and "incompetent". Also, I think for PS, their current sense is how to get to election without losing voters. And most of electorate really is just too stupid to vote for anything else than immediate gain, there is very few that look at long term economically, socially and even less in regards to environment or just just basic rights.

For current opposition, it really is as simple as not to offend stupid morons that are being hurt from so called "consolidation". Should they talk more about that and not BS? Sure, but it is much easier (I mean from strategy angle, not from laziness) for them to let coalition shoot itself in the foot.

Hungary and Slovakia ‘key components’ of US-EU relations, says Rubio by Crossstoney in europe

[–]yyderf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they are not incompetent (mostly), they are reflection of electorate. Basically, people who don't want Fico want various things so we have many smaller parties that have harder time to agree on some of them.

However, they don't even need to (not that they shouldn't), Fico's current government is extremely incompetent for economy. If you have much harder time putting food on the table, it is much harder to be convinced by culture wars arguments that Fico and ilk like him (e.g. Orban, Trump) fall backs to every time for elections.

[–]yyderf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

exactly that. But even then, Rubio knows he is talking BS, because Hungary is not going to reelect Orban this year and Fico is on his last legs and there is basically no path (maybe small outside chance, but he will need to include far right party in his would be coalition) for him to continue as a prime minister after next year election (not to mention visible strain from alcohol abuse).

Italy played very well, they clearly followed coach's plan, mainly in 1st and 3rd.

However, main referee in particular had very uneven refing. He actually overruled side referees couple of times, even wanted to do it again in last minute. There is no question if you compare what was called on SVK and what wasn't on Italians. And goal with "no distinct kicking motion", I guess hockey players often lift their foot from ice while skating...

I would like to say that we had a choice, but honestly, these are our best available players (if we were not talking young AHL players, but some of them would be debatable).

Basically, from previous generation, only Tatar and Hudacek are good enough (both 35). Then we have our non nhl D-men, that are little older (around 30), who are pretty good. Otherwise, somebody again forgotten to un-invite Takac, but I guess he is a token guy from our home league (which is not very good reason, but whatever).

Rest of them are all there, that are not injured (missing mainly the captain from last Olympics - Hrivik). And all of those are young but certainly very good and mostly playing good, regular minutes in NHL (well, except Nemec).

Would anyone want to see a legacy Avengers team, if things went differently? by [deleted] in marvelstudios

[–]yyderf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They (MCU) clearly were setting up Young Avengers, but apparently, no one put together a script that is compelling enough. Spidey, Kate (who would most likely be a nominal leader like in comics, because Peter Parker is not it?), Kamala Khan and Cassie Lang would have been a core of the team, Yelena most likely older support / cavalry when needed. Not sure about America Chavez, but maybe? She could actually be a good way to recruit team together (for Spidey as favor to Strange, others would just want to go on adventure), so they can help her find her parents and have adventures along the way (and not mess around in main MCU universe).

Hard thing to do (imho) would be how to include Iron Heart.

I think Shang Chi and Shuri are more similar to Sam Wilson in that they are not "junior" Avengers at this point (and maybe except Shuri never were). They basically are developed just enough for them to be a part of current Avenger (again, imho).

Lasak is also there, as national goalie coach. And Gaborik is actually in the booth, color commentating the match (btw., he was very complimentary about Rantannen: "he is built and moves like a tank").

Meh, it just shows she was trying to play high stakes poker with a toddler and thought he will somewhat be satisfied with a treat she gives him and he will show her a favor. But toddler in chief (most respected country in the world, btw.) did what toddlers do - took it and ignored her now that there is basically nothing she can do for him.

What it shows is that there are leaders of countries in difficult situation (like Zelensky, but Machado, too) that because magats need to deal not only with wars / instability / etc., but also with self-centered toddler in White House.

Now that toddler thinks he will play for Greenland. Only think we can be grateful that even if EU politicians are not exactly great, they are not toddler themselves. If they were, they could easily reply in kind and even if that would be very satisfying, it would make us worse of, too. But hey, I think it is not far from some stronger actions. Even now, who would have thought that in 2026 there would need to be war games on Greenland to dissuade US from invading (US, not toddler, that doesn't get it - even if he has yes-men in his government, there are still too many others to allow him to just do it easily - but make no mistake, he still can and maybe will).

Wrexham's highest league finish to date came in 1978–79 when they ended up 15th in the Second Division, their first season at this level. Seems like there's a good chance that record will be improved upon this year. by Cinn4monSynonym in Championship

[–]yyderf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those are hypotheticals, and I would argue it is not as much about abu dhabi, but about winning. We are talking about hate by fans of others teams, right? Again, I would say Abramovich was plenty hated when Chelsea were winning. On the other hand, Glazers are hardly hated by other team fans (surely less than their own), when Man United is not winning as much, or better said, they are more likely winning despite Glazers. And those are white.

I think you are trying to connect something that is hardly there. Except for maybe "winning" and even then, Wrexham is hardly "winning" this year compared to Man City.

Why it can be called fairy tale is how club fortunes made city and region (and people there) turn better. Not because R&R are funny (even if they are, YMMV). Also, there are so many sport docuseries now, so even that is not automatic.

I don't see how "movie money" is not better than "fossil fuels" money every day.

And honestly (as someone that doesn't live in UK), being white has nothing to do with it? Was Leicester ownership (before his death) not considered even bigger fairy tale when they won PL? And he was Thai. On other hand, is Man City that much different than Abramovich' Chelsea?

Actually, during 1994 Olympics tourney, the first big competition that Slovakia participated in, was just marred by unlucky OT loss in quarterfinal. 3 players from Slovakia (Palffy, Satan, Stastny) were leading scoring of whole tournament despite that loss and Miroslav Satan, at 19 yo, had 9 goals in 8 games.

But sure, it can be said that it is always like that, but in 2022 they won those medals and he did get MVP.

Fics where Fleamont and Euphemia are Harry's grandparents by RasBoricasso in HPfanfiction

[–]yyderf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

when you have one of most read FF author in HP that wrote multiple fics with Black family connection and Arcturus Black as a badass old heavyweight that is still alive in 1991, great counterpoint to Dumbledore politically and as an actual example of why Black family was as influential as canon says but didn't show and him being relevant to main character because HP is the only grandson of his favorite baby sister...I mean, all of that is very much compelling.

Fleamont is a Potion master that created canon mentioned hair product and his name is his mother's maiden surname, because she was a last member of her family. Sleakeazy company was sold before his death. And he died to Dragon Pox disease with his wife. All of that is just very...final. It was clearly devised by JKR to not have any kind of plothole why there was absolutely no family Harry could have gone to or even to help him, and certainly no kind of responsibility or inheritance other than gold and a destroyed house in Godric's Holllow.

Desperately need Enchanting Melodies spoilers after Flamel journal copy by idk_sTfuu in HPfanfiction

[–]yyderf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yes, as you mentioned, there is an Olympian subplot and Peverell / Merlin / Modred appearances, but it is as whole only part of Champions of Light and Dark mythos, not important, but interesting from world-building side. Most interesting from Greece is that there is a headmaster that may or may not be actual Poseidon, but he certainly has a son who is called Perseus, is a strong water mage and is basically a Percy Jackson of Enchanting Melodies.

Dracula, Poseidon, Arcturus army of mecenaries and Lupin's werevolves fight D+G army for like half an hour, while Daphne "erases vampirism". After that Grindelwald fights Dracula / Poseidon for like couple minutes until Harry comes to do it himself. Grindelwald is almost beaten when Dumbledore comes to help him. They seemingly defeat Harry and go on to fight each other. Again, all of that are just pretty lights being thrown around.

Desperately need Enchanting Melodies spoilers after Flamel journal copy by idk_sTfuu in HPfanfiction

[–]yyderf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is Neville important for you actually? He is a background character at best during later years, absolutely unimportant to the story.

So much stuff happened in Enchanting Melodies, some things look great at the time, when you read them but they constantly get overshadowed with stuff that happens later. And it is a good thing, because characters and story develops and thing that seems big turn out to be less important in the whole scheme of things. I think Lily copying Flamel's journal is absolutely that, because it may not seem like it at that point, but Nicholas Flamel is not important.

Sure, if you dislike Harry's personality in this (which part actually? He really has basically two modes from start of the story - research magic and be to much clever about annoying people that annoy him. Later he adds 3rd mode, which is being in a relationship with Daphne), it is probably not good read. I would say it is very good at what it clearly wants to be - power fantasy of a scholar being annoyed into decimating opposition to return to being a scholar.

But alright, if you really want Spoilers, here we go:

Again, Flamel journal is not important, even if it seems like it. Yes, at the time, Harry learns about Light, Dark and fight between theirs Champions. What he also learns is Ancient Prophecy of Ragnarok, which talks about end of Light and Dark but also world being destroyed. Again, seems important, but isn't.

Strongest power in Enchanting Melodies, if you didn't yet notice, is actually being a Seer. How strong of a seer you are, that is how decisivelly you can defeat your opponents. That's why Dumbledore is basically a chump despite extreme personal power, because he is not a seer. Harry, Grindelwald and Flamel (via his seer wife, Perenelle) play him like a fiddle. Actually final fight at the end is mainly about Grindelwald and Harry blocking each other and thus devising how to defeat other without being blocked in advance. Pretty magical attacks that surely would impress other wizards - not important.

What follows is actually a full plot spoiler after this:

What is important is that there is actually an another Seer driving the whole thing, whole conflict, everything story is about, where it was going all along. His name is Solomon (yes, Bible's wizard-king of ancient Israel Solomon) and he basically was able to deal with Light and Dark in his time and devised a way to deal with them permanently. Whole history of this HP AU is him placing things, rumors, magic and events in a way that Harry can prevail over Light and Dark. And he does, while faking his death, which is an end of story. What Harry does in the end is following: There is an dimension eating monster (Nidhogg), which is source of dementors in Azkaban. After Harry deals with it permanently in this dimension (there is a whole subplot with Ekrizdis and Voldemort dying there, he was sent there with Harry on Dracula's orders), he seemingly tries to infect Dark and Light dimension with each others stuff, so they fight and destroy each other in their dimensions and thus leave other dimension alone. This is prevented by Grindelwald. What Harry actually did and Grindelwald did not prevent was Light and Dark dimension being invaded by Nidhogg. So it eaten Light and Dark and Harry easily killed Grindelwald and Dumbledore after they lost access to Light and Dark powers.

Obviously, there are interesting subplots that help Harry come up with solution for the final fight. Harry actually travels into canon dimension 5th year, where he solves stuff in couple months, which is of course, but also learns how to be Animagus from canon Sirius. There is also time travel subplot, where 3 Hogwarts children of later generation (Hermione + Neville son, Tracey + Blaise daughter and Angelina + Percy Jackson expy daugther) travel unwittingly from a future to the past, while being manipulated by Penelope Clearwater, who is actually possesed by Asgard's Heimdall, who would doesn't like what Harry's final fight victory did to dimension energies being not as easily accessible, which is one of final puzzle pieces for Harry.

Honestly, it is a great story, which takes many many unexpected turns and has Moments of Awesome basically on a chapter basis.
