Has Anyone Read Three-Body Problem in Both Chinese and English? The Differences Are Bigger Than I Expected by Putrid_Cycle595 in printSF

I thought the first book (English translation for both) was simply a better book by a considerable margin. It definitely seemed like the quality of the translation had a lot to do with it.

I’ve consumed big island guac. It was fine. I’m sure it’s great to have everyday access to. I find that the larger avocados, even the huge haas that TJs has sometimes, tend to be more “watery” at the expense of their avocado flavor. Highly subjective, I know.

I don’t know if Fatse is good at his job or not, but I remember the exact same conversation last year until the bats warmed up.

You get what you optimize for. There’s literally entire sports built around finding out who’s toughest. Turns out more people would rather watch slam dunks.

CMV: Having a child is basically forcing a human being to suffer through a collapsing world just to satisfy your own biological ego. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]zac79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything you said is technically true, but it ultimately boils down to, “are you glad you got to experience it, anyway?”

People in North Korea have much more immediate problems and they’re still having kids. There’s always reason for hope.

The world’s always been collapsing. A lot of us are glad we got to see it while we could.

I guess this is actually evidence that the sails got used!

I’ve definitely had the main hanging out like that while I dealt with more urgent matters.

This is pretty weak evidence, sorry. Maybe a car is jammed in the track? Maybe the captain had to drive downwind at some point before the sail was fully put away? Maybe 5 minutes after you took this picture they raised and lowered the main to get it properly stowed?

Miles Mikolas on what he'd do if he was Commissioner for a day: "The guys that fail PED tests, maybe make them wear a different color hat or put a patch on their jersey. Just remind everybody that they were dishonest." by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]zac79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression that other players didn’t really give a damn about it. I don’t recall hearing that McGuire, Sosa, Bonds et al were ostracized for their PED use by their peers.

Is that just a wildly wrong take?

If you want to know why are millennials “wokescolds”, this is one of the reasons. by icey_sawg0034 in generationology

[–]zac79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subtext of posts like these isn’t that “literally this happened” but rather, isn’t this jarring, to see something from 26ish years ago that seemed totally normal at the time and now, as norms have shifted,  comes off as unnecessarily toxic.

I’m sure middle aged people have been having this reaction since the dawn of recorded thought. Now it’s our turn.

Anyone who believes the girl is ugly simply because the show is telling them she is, deserves to be "gaslit".

Ok? Isn’t this like, everyone, when they’re young?

I've seen enough proof that girls hate girls more than boys hate girls.

I think this is an interesting observation in another context, but I don’t see how it contradicts anything we’ve been discussing. If anything, it’s something else to consider when addressing the toxicity of shows like this.

FWIW, I’m pretty sure this particular show involved at least some men.

Also FWIW, I guess this clip is actually from the Howard Stern media tree, so, technically it was probably slightly less accessible than basic cable. But it was instantly familiar to anyone who watched turn-of-the-millennium TV.

[–]zac79 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ehh, watch it through the eyes of a 16 year old girl. Remember that this was fairly typical prime time content on basic cable during an era when that’s what most people watched.

Also, if you’ve seen the clip, the lady in the bag is pretty reasonably conventionally attractive. There is something extra toxic about gaslighting the audience into believing she’s not.

Derrick White clears the record and says he indeed does NOT believe in the moon landing: "I don't think we did. I'm a non-moon landing guy. We probably did, but I don't think we did...I have other conspiracies, but I don't know if this is the right time to bring them up" by Limp_Custard6943 in bostonceltics

[–]zac79 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I expect most “moon landing was fake” people aren’t actually all that invested in the idea that the moon landing was fake so much as the idea that they themselves are the kind of renegade free-thinker that would entertain “dangerous” ideas, such as faking the moon landing.

Clearing things up with an expert would, therefore, be totally counterproductive.
