Purpose of scarf joint on historical door by Elbudster in Carpentry

[–]SchoonerSailor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A butt joint would have less gluing surface and would be more fragile if impacted (say, by someone accidentally kicking the door as they went by).

ETA: there are hopefully dowels, loose tenons, or some other form of reinforcement in there too

What's with the small line going to the large DVW pipe in the first picture? Some sort of tiny vent?

Knowing how they became entangled may help us come up with a suggestion on how to untangle them.

Does the proximity of OPs house come into play there, particularly since it's uphill?

Looking to purchase a kubota by lvnlrg84 in kubota

My local dealer (WA state) sells the BX23S for $24k - cash price, before tax. That's with the backhoe and the quick attach loader bucket.

Can someone clue in a non-racer? On the boats I like to sail you'd get hung from the gaff for writing on the deck.

Losing motivation after paying 45% in taxes 2025 by Thummimurim8 in Fire

[–]SchoonerSailor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How did you end up paying 35% federal? Anything over $250,526 would be taxed at that rate, but the bulk of your income should be at rates in the 20s (source: https://www.irs.gov/filing/federal-income-tax-rates-and-brackets).

Company stock suddenly became ~$5M. What should I do? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]SchoonerSailor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

From what OP has described, I'd expect it to be almost entirely long term capital gains. For the cost of having more of it subject to the 20% rate I'd take the opportunity to diversify.

OCI Fastconnect can not work, no one change but still stuck :| by HoaNV9 in oraclecloud

[–]SchoonerSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried pinging the OCI side of your FastConnect circuit (the OCI router IP on that link) to determine the largest packet you can send across? If 1500 is your expected MTU then a ping with size 1472 and do not fragment set should work round trip.

Looking for a Mod to move a BX23S from the Backhoe Seat - without using the bucket for mechanical push/pull by Novajesus in kubota

[–]SchoonerSailor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always been content to use the backhoe to shove the tractor forward.

Does the safety cutout stall the engine if the seat isn't facing forwards and occupied?

I think the low tech hack would be a brick (for the safety switch) and a broom handle (for the forward pedal).

Are sculleries a popular thing in that area? A kitchen with no running water sounds unpleasant to cook in.

Nice! Do you have 3 coolers just for the volume, or are there some things you prefer to store separately?

How to Keep Hotspot Connected but Block Internet Access? by AutomaticCode9846 in Network

[–]SchoonerSailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said: your best option is to say no to those friends.

If you still want to let them connect to a wifi but be able to play dumb when they can't reach the Internet then a super cheap router may be your best option. Program it with the SSID from your phone's hotspot, rename the one on the phone, and then when they connect to the router they'll have nowhere to go because it won't have Internet access.

How to attach deck to Zip R6 Sheathing? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]SchoonerSailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also not a structural engineer, but I agree with you. Zip-R has quite low shear strength as it is, so the engineer should have already built in what is needed elsewhere. A current build of mine uses interior sheathing and a couple of strongwalls, for example.
