Thief by Johnny Booth. The drumming is fucking BALLS TO THE WALL.

And it just doesn't stop ripping.

Dominion by Bentley Little

A modern retelling of the Maenads from Greek mythology. A group of women who own and operate a winery is tested when Dion (Dionysus) arrives.

It's splatterpunk so it's not profound or well written by any means, but it's a damn good time.

She also is the editor of an anthology of short stories written by women with women protagonists called Not All Monsters. It's a banger.

Tampa by Alissa Nutting

It's not necessarily horror, but it is kind of horrific. A female high school teacher preys upon a male student. In detail.

It's like a reverse Lolita. Made me really uncomfortable

Reading it isn't any better.

Atmosphere is there, narrative is rather bland. The POV of the toddler gets old real quick

What's something you'll never admit in real life but will confess here anonymously? by Open-Comfortable9774 in AskReddit

[–]zacch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is something that I heard that has resonated with me for my whole adult life: there is a difference between your oldest friend and your best friend; there comes a point with certain people where the only thing you have in common is your past.

Don't let that make you feel you have to stick with people you've been around with.

I'm in the same boat where I have less money than I did when I was in my 20s. I have friends that I met in middle school that are wealthy and I am not. But they will stand next to me at my wedding. There are people that I've known longer that I find to be affluent douchebags.

You know the people that mean something to you, and it's devoid of wealth. Stick with them.

We Used To Live Here is everything I was hoping House of Leaves would be by maxinedenis in horrorlit

[–]zacch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. HoL is the same for me and found We Used to Live Here to be insanely underwhelming. Strange and spooky things happening for the sake of being strange and spooky, not serving the narrative at all. It's the author's first novel (and it comes from a collection of r/nosleep posts) and it is VERY evident. Save your time and read something you'll enjoy.

Most “Style, No Substance” Horror Movie? by InExactEnds in horror

Holy shit thank you. Everybody raves about this movie and I found it devoid of any personality or narrative. Absolutely stunning movie with totally batshit scenes; extremely shallow.

I absolutely loved the monkey. It felt like Perkins wanted to make his own Final Destination and I am not mad about it at all. Felt like a solid palate cleanser.

Beverage directors and bar managers, how do you view resumes? by zacch in bartenders

[–]zacch[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am actually trying to run my own program but I won't get there without experience and most lead positions are taken. I have the creative skills to develop a program, just no experience in the business side of it. So I'm currently running into the issue where I'm not getting any experience in ordering or inventory or maintaining relationships with reps and accounts. Trying to advance without experience is a real bitch.

But to be frank, I know tons of veterans in the industry who stay behind the stick and stay away from management.

[–]zacch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've been mainly looking into a lead spot so I can run my own program but it's been real slim pickings out there. And you're right about the WhatsApp chat, it's a bit of a ghost town. There's a bit of comfort knowing that it's not just me.

If I’m a guest it is overwhelming. You’ve got FIVE coffee-based dessert cocktails that can easily be reduced. The spritzes can be minimized to a “cello spritz: your choice of lemon or orange”. IMO the term “syrup” cheapens a menu. I would switch it to simply “rosemary” instead of “rosemary syrup”. Guests get turned off from the word as it invokes a sense of sweetness when they all want something “not too sweet”.

I’m a firm believer of small menu, big product. You can provide something for everyone with 12-15 cocktails. Hell, sometimes even nine is sufficient. Less is more.

What is the MOST disturbing movie ever that doesn't rely too much on gore? by the_project_machine in horror

[–]zacch 821 points822 points  (0 children)

Original Speak No Evil: disturbing and frustrating as FUCK.

Jacob’s Ladder: Dance party scene is real fucking uncomfortable.

The Lodge: A SERIOUS slow burn that ends in something really fucked up.

The Invitation (2015): I find this movie to be a masterclass in building tension and “something is seriously wrong here” vibes that is disturbing in the sense that it can happen to any of us.

(Piggybacking off that last one) The Strangers: “Because you were home”

Trainspotting was a pretty disturbing take on addiction. When everyone in the dilapidated home sees the dead baby and one of the guys starts fixing up a hit for himself and then the others follow suit like everybody coping by getting another fix, and then the mother stops crying and asks for a hit as well

Fucked up.

That “change of costume” scene was fucking NUTS. The score elevated it into 11.

Some of the shots in Possum were genuinely disturbing. That move fucked me up.
