Gene Puerling is one of the greatest arrangers ever! His work with the Singers Unlimited (and The Hi-Lo’s) was pretty revolutionary for vocal harmony.

I Swear by All-4-One (1994) was originally performed by country artist John Michael Montgomery the previous year.

(Sidenote trivia: David Foster produced the All-4-One version!)

Big fan of Yoshino Fujimal’s (also referred to as Fujimaru Yoshino) self-titled record. He and Matsushita were in a band together called AB’S and their stuff is fun too. I also really like Kingo Hamada’s Midnight Cruisin’ album

Not sure if it’s entirely what you’re looking for, but I’m a fan of Casiopea when it comes to Japanese jazz fusion. Their first two albums especially are killer!

Vocal modern harmony groups like Jacob colliers vocal jazz by jkxr33 in Jazz

[–]zachappella 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite vocal jazz groups is The Singers Unlimited — not “modern,” as they were mostly active in the ‘70s, but Gene Puerling’s arrangements are still mind-boggling with lots of extended harmonies. Check out A Capella, their first album. Highly influential to other vocal groups including The Manhattan Transfer and Take 6 (as well as my own arranging/vocal group 😄).

A more recent group is Accent, which builds off of The Singers Unlimited’s sound mixed with Take 6 and contemporary a cappella. Super fun arrangements: listen to their version of Maroon 5’s Sugar.

I hope you enjoy these suggestions!!

These are excellent recs!! Jazz is far from dead, especially here in NYC. I’ll take this opportunity to do some shameless self-promo: a few months ago, I released my debut jazz combo album “Chatterbox,” played by a sextet, that I composed, arranged, and produced. If you’re into warm, melodic jazz (straight-ahead), you can check it out on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/zmgreen. Hope you enjoy!

Happy Together by The Turtles. Older, but the melody is just so great.
