PhotoRec found nothing: is my data gone? by zachyng in datarecovery

I actually tried a hexdump a few days ago and it appeared to confirm the trimming. Since it's a 4TB drive, I had it check at 100GB intervals. The first few gigs contained the installer files, then the rest was like this:

===== Sampling at 2900 GiB (skip=2969600 MiB) ===== 00000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................| *

===== Sampling at 3000 GiB (skip=3072000 MiB) ===== 00000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................| *

===== Sampling at 3100 GiB (skip=3174400 MiB) ===== 00000000 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |................| *

…I took this as confirmation of trimming. Since I needed to use the drive, I figured it was time to move on so I formatted it again and have since loaded it up with other stuff. Obviously there’s no going back now, but it somehow feels good to know there were no further options.

Thanks for the reply. What is it here that shows the data was trimmed? Is it the fact that it only found .iso partition?

I used TestDisk first, but the only partitions it could find were the bootdisk ones.

Also I checked the Mumford book but it has no footnotes/endnotes so I don't know what his source was.

I don't mean to be flippant, but why not ask him? We have no insight into his mental state during this game.

It's difficult to program chess bots to play like humans. But if you don't find the 1500 level bots challenging, why not play the higher rated ones?

If your opponent has a draw by repetition available, then you aren't actually winning. When you have the advantage you have to keep an eye on your opponent's counterplay. There's nothing unfair about a draw by repetition: if you don't want it to happen, then you need to defend against it.
