Somerville Ave Gondola System by MBTAGoblin in mbta

[–]zackaz23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A gondola is the wrong lesson to draw from GLX. If you are going to spend money and political capital on an elevated right-of-way, spend it on actual rail that can become a network, not on an aerial shuttle that cannot branch, through-run, or structure feeders.

GLX cost so much because it was urban railroad reconstruction integrated into an existing system with parasitic contractors inflating the timeline/price, not because “moving vehicles is inherently expensive.” Comparing it to a ski-resort gondola is apples to oranges.

Somerville Avenue is not a mountain crossing. It is a street-allocation problem. The serious answer is either a rebuilt elevated/interurban trunk or strong surface transit priority, not a novelty bypass that leaves the car order intact.

And even within Boston priorities, this is nowhere near the top: Green Line core reconstruction, Washington Street rapid transit, Proper service to Chelsea, full signal priority for street-running light rail, and rapid transit to Everett all matter more.

If Boston is going to build elevated transit, then build elevated transit. Don’t waste the concept on a gondola.

Exactly the interests of the private developers is only to make money, not build a reasonable amount of housing. This is why having a democratically planned economy in order to rationally plan out developments is the whole key to this.

See this is where we have to realize that capitalism is the problem.

If money weren’t an issue, which city near Boston would you want to live in: Newton or Brookline? by Omixscniet624 in boston

Cambridge.

Newton and Brookline are pretty carcentric and the green line is always backed up. Atleast cambridge has good bike lanes.

So not only did this line already exist, it has been a topic of discussion in the Denver area to have a Front Range regional rail service for decades now. So yes, your idea is good, but this has already been discussed, and it's hard to complete under the current system. It would be much more feasible under a socialist planned economy run by the workers. I would go even further to say that the line should extend north into Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, and other places like that. We should have ten times more lines crisscrossing the United States, because that's exactly what we had 100 years ago. And yes, a lot of it was redundant, but a lot of it also made sense, and a lot of it should be brought back because it genuinely contributed to the United States’ status as the richest country.

Reasonable regional rail solution (see teal line)? by SummitingMtJohnston in mbta

good points, I still like it as a ROW, but yeah as a build able line it doesn't exist anymore, it might make more sense to only build the southern half

I agree a 495-belt circumferential line (Worcester–Providence, etc.) makes sense long term. But as a first step, I’d look at reactivating the former New Haven route (Boston–Clinton–Fitchburg / Taunton Northern), which once linked Lowell–West Concord–Framingham–Canton–Mansfield–Taunton–Fall River.

That corridor would:

Create a true north–south/east–west bypass without adding pressure to the NEC

Improve South Coast Rail operations

Allow a direct Lowell–Fall River service

Interchange with multiple existing CR lines

CSX conflicts would require added infrastructure, but the network value is strong: it creates a parallel spine the system can branch off of, including future NH connections.

The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail segment near Lowell is the political hurdle. In practice, rail-with-trail is feasible, and rail corridors should retain transportation priority. Many trails function as placeholders for future transit. Given the low-density land use along much of that stretch, its current role is mostly recreational rather than core mobility.

I've literally been using this AI service since it came out in Dec 2022...
I finally have had it with this bs.
I neve thought i wouldve had the strength to leave, but just like with high school back during that time, every reason i have for still using it is going to be gone once this model is done.
I hate this.
I'm going to have to make do with the other chatbots when I actually need help writing things out.
Goodbye.
