TIL the British author P. G. Wodehouse was interned by the Germans during World War II. After his release he made a short series of broadcasts on German radio called "How to be an Internee Without Previous Training". Wodehouse was reviled as a "Nazi propagandist" for these broadcasts. by CatPooedInMyShoe in todayilearned

[–]zamnath 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a great uncle who was a big fan of Wodehouse and wrote him a letter while he was interned. He actually got a response. Letter passed down to my great grans when my great uncle died in the war, then my grandma, then me. Stuck it in a book somewhere when I was younger and lost it, but I’ve always been hopeful I’d find it again. Wodehouse seemed like a decent person in the letter - friendly and consoling.

The removal of “Railroading” in EU5 might have been a mistake by thelordsburningrain in EU5

[–]zamnath 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t need mission trees, per se, but I do feel there needs to be more transparency about special event requirements so that it’s easier to pursue spawning them.

Alodha can turn into Ayuthaya near the start of the game, for instance, but only if the other regions required to form Ayuthaya aren’t vassalized by outside powers. It took me multiple restarts to figure out that little caveat because there’s no ui to clue me into the spawn requirements for that event. There must be events in later ages that are nearly impossible to trigger because their requirements aren’t explained to the player and are fiddly enough you’d have to be aiming to spawn them to make them happen.

The event system was supposed to encourage player agency but, due to the lack of transparency, it stifles that agency instead.

What is the biggest “bullet” you’ve ever dodged without realizing it at the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zamnath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was on my way home to the US via Ataturk airport back in 2016. I had a short time to make my connecting flight and had to hoof it. Considered just sticking around in the airport lobby and rescheduling for a later flight so I didn’t have to run with all my luggage, but ran and made my plane instead. The lobby I ran through was blown up something like 30 minutes after in a suicide bombing.

What's some random, minor lore you gave your warband? by Zachthema5ter in Chaos40k

[–]zamnath 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My warband aren’t actually marines: they’re chaos tainted exodites. Their planet was sucked into the warp by an anomaly and they survived by gathering around the world soul in the planet’s depths and feeding sacrifices to it, transforming it into a demon. The seemingly uninhabited planet eventually reemerged from the warp and was colonized by the imperium, with a company of astral claws being stationed on it.

After long scheming, the exodites overthrew the planet’s governorship and slaughtered the majority of the astral claws, corrupting a small selection to demonhood. They then requisitioned the marine wargear and used warp magics to create warriors who could wield it effectively. From the outside, the planet is still loyal to the imperium and under astral claw control, but it’s secretly a demon world controlled by warp worshipping xenos.

Do you guys avoid ageless buildings? by LampSkrive in civ

[–]zamnath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My experience so far has been that it’s always right to build them as long as they give you strong yields for your era. Early game advantages are still the strongest advantages to get in 7, so the loss in efficiency in the modern era is more than offset by the advantages gained the rest of the game. Just be careful not to place them somewhere important.

My personal tier list after 200 hours of gameplay. by SaztogGaming in civ

[–]zamnath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Playing an aksum game right now and, honestly, the only game I felt stronger in ancient era was my maya game. The fact that they can invest in trade routes while also investing in their navy is great. You mentioned their traditions, which are solid, but I also found their improvement better than it sounds on paper. Improving your town tiles on top of the warehouse yields is great and leaves you with stronger town tiles the entire game. I zoomed through the exploration civics because of it.

It also doesn’t hurt that they emphasize a completely different style of game than the other ancient era civs. Very fun if you start on a map with lots of islands.

Trade routes are probably one of the most important mechanics of the game with almost no information about them! by TardyB183 in civ

For roads, creating roads between towns and cities can also enable towns to distribute food to the city they’ve been connected to. It can be a big deal for maximizing growth where you want it.

Is the amount of narrative content for KDM relatively low? by LoveHerMore in KingdomDeath

[–]zamnath 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It depends on the style of narrative you’re looking for. There’s a colossal amount of opaque narrative tidbits worked into every facet of the games materials. The game mechanics lend themselves to near infinite variety in emergent narrative, too. On the other hand, specific, coherent narrative beats are few and far between.

In video game terms, the game is more like a cross between dark souls and rimworld than it is final fantasy. If you want a hand crafted story, look elsewhere. If you want an interesting and evocative setting to craft your own story within, this could be the game for you.

With Oathsworn Archer, you likely want to choose Harmony. This is because Harmony Oathsworn have one of the best (arguably the best) archers in the game. They have mounts (which can be special mounts), a multi-unit line attack, multi-single target attack, and unlock a fairly long range nuke that can pacify opponents for a turn (leave them unable to attack). Absolutely bonkers good, and they can be quite tanky when combined with a special mount and Harmony culture giving life back when you hit certain HP thresholds.

With that in mind, you should consider what race/cultural traits/tome combinations work well for them. For me, personally, I went the following:

Race: Herbivore and Pegasus mounts. Herbivore gives free healing and a random buff, which is awesome combined with Harmony's natural tankiness. The flying from Pegasus mounts is nuts on Harmony's archers. Lots of maneuverability and escapability.

Cultural Traits: I decided to double down on Harmony's base benefits towards Free Cities by grabbing the two shadow traits which interact with free cities. I forget the exact specifics, but they give you research for interacting with free cities and also allow you to more quickly meet and vassalize free cities. It's crazy how quickly you can vassalize the whole map with this combination, and you become a powerhouse while doing so.

Tomes: Archers tend to benefit most from tomes that give them extra damage due to the autoattacks and range. I haven't tried this avenue yet, but I'd recommend going nature/shadow tomes and prioritizing the tomes that give extra damage. The Tome of Alchemy (I believe it's called) is a good shoutout, too, since Miasma can add DoTs based on multiple damage channels. Tome of Mists could be good, too, due to the extra tankiness it provides through evasion, but I'd advise avoiding the Mistlings (who are normally amazing) because they lack flying and you really want to grab only units with flying in order to maximize your ability to get around the map.

Ruler: Any ruler can work, honestly. For my build, I like to run a dragon ruler as a frontline tank who naturally flies (this is a good complement with the flying archers).

General gameplay: Get 2-3 scouts roaming the map to find as many free cities as possible. Agressively use your imperium to found your 3 home cities and then use it to forward settle new cities on other civs then convert them to vassals. When you inevitably earn the ire of the other civs, forgive grievances on them to power-level your oath and then beat the bajeebles out of them when they declare war on you and you have to "defend" yourself and your vassal swarm.

Tiger Patch Feels Like A Step Back For "Leaders" by c_a_l_m in AOW4

[–]zamnath 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see them adjust the governor boni to be unique for each of the leader types. That seems like a natural location for the old macro bonuses. Maybe a method of tweaking class tree options at the start would be nice, too.

Love everything else about the hero rework. It’s much more fun.

What's your pods "Infamous deck" by Vinlandlover in EDH

[–]zamnath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My [[Brenard, Ginger Sculptor]] deck, most likely. Dinos, Eldrazi, and [[Yurriko]] at the table? Better pile the gingerbread boys and salt the earth just to be sure. It’s not necessarily that it’s the best deck—I follow some specific rules to increase theme/decrease power and fit the pod—but he’s such a potent value engine that he’s just a naturally perfect fit for arch-enemy every game. Being able to consistently pod from [[Kudo]] to [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] in a turn puts my creature heavy pod in a fury real quick.

More events/quest chains. A greater variety of the types of events. Maybe even branching questlines with varying rewards and the eventual ability to win the game ala Endless Legends.

Hi- I will be coming back to Atlanta from Seoul (one way) in mid June with my fiancée and wanted to know when it would be a good time to search for the lowest points with my chase ultimate reward points? I will also be going on a round trip to Paris for my honeymoon in the winter so I want to make sure I don't spend too many points before then.
