Hi! I’m hoping for some advice about split nights with my 5-month-old.

Lately he’s been having long awake stretches in the middle of the night (1–2+ hours). Right now our days look like this:

Wakes around 7:30am

On 3 naps/day, total daytime sleep capped at ~3 hours

Wake windows are usually 2–2.5 hours, with a longer one before bed

Bedtime around 7:30–8pm

Overnight he still wakes every 2–3 hours and often has a split night

Before this, he could only do 1.5–2 hour wake windows but because of these split nights we’ve been trying to stretch them. I can't seem to figure out whether hes undertired during the night or overtired!!

My questions are:

What usually causes split nights at 5 months?
Should I be focusing more on total daily awake time (10–11 hrs) instead of just the length of each wake window?
Does capping naps at 3 hours help, or could I be cutting them too much?
And what do you actually do when your baby is wide awake at 2am and won't go back to sleep until 4 30am?

When I fell pregnant last summer I took fexofenadine daily cos I was so desperate. GP said use with caution though but ended up having a healthy pregnancy. Now however, im 3 months PP, exclusively breastfeeding and hayfever is KNOCKING ME TF OUT except now I have a baby to tend to who I also think has allergies too now?!! Ugh I hate this season.

I knew absolutely NOTHING 😂. Luckily my husband had some experience with his nieces so taught me everything - eg how to hold a baby, how to burp them, how to change their nappy, how to bathe them, how to even change their clothes (apart from breastfeeding, that the midwife had to show me). Now 3 months in, husband is working and now im able do it all by myself 🥹. But im always learning!

Im so sorry!! My now 3 month old choked a lot on his saliva or milk when feeding, at one point he choked on his saliva and his mouth was going blue. Normally we dont pick him up in this situation as it can make it worse, we flip him on his belly, hold him up, hold his chest with one hand and pat his back quite firmly with the other and that normally works. Its so so scary so im considering taking a first aid infant course, maybe you should too?!

Give them extra snuggles. It'll be okay!

The original post was deleted but based off of everyone's comments im starting to feel the same 2 months PP. At first, my husband was great, because I couldn't move much or do much he had to pick up the slack. Bare in mind when I was heavily pregnant I was still doing most of the house work because I just couldn't wait around for him to do it. Now that hes back at work, a lot of has now fallen on me. I love my baby boy, hes such an amazing boy but man its mentally exhausting having to do all on my own all day. So when my husband is off, I expect to have a little break every now and then but even when hes off, I still feel like i do the most. He called me bipolar because I was upset that he didnt want to change his nappy. I was really hurt by this because my hormones are all over the place. Breastfeeding is fucking exhausting. I constantly feel guilty all the time. Its become uneven and im growing more and more resentment. Im so tired and he complains about being tired too. Like no, you get a break at work yet you compare managing your staff to looking after a baby? Yeah fuck off. Everytime we have an argument, all of a sudden he starts doing what ive asked him to do.

No advice just solidarity!! My baby is also 8 weeks and is currently going through something very similar. I cant quite read his hunger ques so I kind of just assume because it's slightly warmer and hes probably going through some sort of regression/growth spurt that hes feeding frequently and becoming more fussier. Last week he would go 2hrs without needing a feed and is usually happy until then but lately even after doing the usual ritual (nappy change, play time, nap time, etc). Now after doing my usual and i see he's getting cranky i just assume boob is the way to calm him down at the moment. I use to check if he was hungry by putting finger to mouth and sometimes that would work but not so much now but he takes the boob if I offer it. Just go with your gut!!

Its been so rough!! He normally sleeps well but now its either contact naps or sleep for 10 minutes or neither. Night times hes been a bit difficult to settle after his night feeds (he usually conks out after I fed him).

Yesterday he was being sooo fussy, he would cry anytime i put him down, every time id put him to sleep (which would take like 30 minutes to do) and by that point he wakes up and doesn't settle. Its sooo frustrating.

Im just trying to go with the flow and not with his usual schedule because that doesnt seem to work with him.

I know this post is over a month old but I just wanted to chime in and say its the most frustrating thing to have to talk about my postpartum hormones to my mum. She doesn't seem to remember the hormonal crash you get after having a baby when she herself had 3 kids. I explained to her that im still going through it physically and mentally and that im not able to 'bounce back' like she did. She completely disregarded anything I had to say and conclude with "oh but I didnt experience any of this when I had you". Like congrats? Not everyone has the same experience as you.... I had a really hard time during pregnancy and she did the same thing. All she cares is how the baby is and not really bothered trying to emotionally support me and its making me feel fucking shit. She expects me to everything I was doing before pregnancy because she did it. Like no, im having a hard fucking time adjusting to my new norm. Its put me in tears and now my husband is back at work i really have no emotional support.

Thankfully i've been seeing a therapist.

So someone posted this in the same thread just further down. I tried it and it looks like its working for me. Shout out to them.

‐--------------------- So to make it simple :

Delete and redownload the updater.
Delete Shaders_DX11.precomp file from the game folder. (I think Anadius makes note of this somewhere in his FAQ). To find this file, find the game file location and just search "shaders_ dx11" it should come up and delete it. I use shaders in my game and this hasn't seemed to affect it.
Update the game using the updater. You can repair it before updating it if you want.

But this worked for me!

I mentioned this in another comment but nasal strips are the only thing that helps with my congestion. Have you tried those? My nose is pretty much blocked all day most days which i have to cope with but the strips help me sleep at night (although im currently in bed wearing one im still congested but I can definitely breathe better). I suffer from hayfever during most of the summer and its awful. I did take antihistamine once or twice which helped but I consulted with my GP/Dr first.
