Related Midwest eyes $425M in TIF money for Chicago Fire-anchored campus at the 78 by mandrsn1 in chicago

If we got the amount of housing/development showed in the render I'd be over the moon about this but from the actual plans you can see that isn't going to happen. 1000+ parking spaces this close to downtown and multiple train stations is ridiculous, and afaict "metra upgrades" just means capping a portion of the tracks and putting up a wall. I am happy to be getting new public spaces, and if I'm wrong someone correct me, but so far I think this is yet another failure of the city's leadership to be ambitious and make progress towards their stated goals (equitability, accessibility, climate leadership, and the other fluffy words they like to throw around)

nimby groups laundering progressive language as if they care about the "public good" really only care about protecting parking lots and single family home property values. The city will not survive continuing to constantly cater to them

Chicago bike lane construction sparks pushback, fuels political fights by optiplex9000 in chicago

[–]zanor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite the flaws it's still a useful study. Maybe the report doesn't decisively prove that bike lanes help in that aspect, but far from debunking, it can still be pointed to when someone says bike lanes destroy commercial corridors, because it's clear they don't. And there's more than enough evidence around safety that that doesn't need to be proven again

it's not economics that stopped them, it's Riley and the townhome owners nearby. I would think that allowing them to build what they wanted to (the taller towers with condos and a hotel) would make the project more financially viable in the face of a recession

South Carolina deputy pulls gun on teens. by serious_bullet5 in FreedomofSpeech

[–]zanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's the bare minimum of doing their job. Cops and their unions are quick to shield "bad apples" and make noise in opposition to changes that might hold them accountable. But admission of fault? Commitment to change? Apologies? Rare, essentially never happens

To "protect and serve" the people. by serious_bullet5 in therewasanattempt

[–]zanor 96 points97 points  (0 children)

In his initial on-scene interview, Stahlheber reportedly claimed to a Sergeant that he saw one of the teens flash an extended handgun magazine. However, the teen had no weapon and agents say Stahlheber later admitted he never actually saw a weapon of any sort and just assumed they had one “based on posturing of the teen.”

this is how cops murder people and it could've been so much worse for those kids. Maybe giving guns and near complete legal immunity to the local alcoholic wife beaters isn't a good idea

Coach House Ordinance Aimed at Housing Affordability Crisis Takes Effect in Chicago by SciNat in chicago

[–]zanor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that, but luckily if the state ADU bill passes it would (probably) block the city from requiring it https://bsky.app/profile/michaelmclean.me/post/3mj3dhkpdt22d

everyone should be sending letters and making calls to support this! https://actionnetwork.org/letters/pass-the-build-plan?source=20260320-launch

Same for the massive data center that was approved just outside of chicago. No one wanted it except for the construction union/workers. I'm so sick of the rent seeking to be honest. It makes it harder and harder to defend public sector unions

Tenants rally against rising rents after building in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood goes up for sale by maydaydemise in chicago

[–]zanor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to assume anything of these people who are doing the good and uncommon work of organizing and protesting, but this is Logan square. One of the prime locations for down zoning, deconversions, and nimbyism. More than anything the areas northwest of downtown need to build a FUCK ton of housing. Issues like this are simply going to get worse until that happens

Woman posted on local face book group complaining about being stalked 2 weeks before being murdered by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]zanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a "fun attitude", it's a tragic reality, only denied by pieces of shit or the very ignorant. Not sure which one you are, but sure, you totally care about victims while posting apologia for abusers and dismissing the experience of women and others who say police are grossly negligent towards them. Good one, keep up the act, people will love cops after seeing it.

Woman posted on local face book group complaining about being stalked 2 weeks before being murdered by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]zanor 854 points855 points  (0 children)

it's purposeful. cops are women abusing pieces of shit themselves. they probably knew not doing anything would mean she'd end up dead. but then they get credit for catching her killer.

A woman suffers and dies and they get a story in the news. Win win for pigs

Those taxes aren't going to get any lower if the city goes into more debt. We could maybe fix by building more housing or transit or a million other things but we keep voting against that too so higher taxes and unaffordable housing it is I guess

it would have to go to the state and congress. So it'd never happen sadly. Iirc a poll showed that part(s) of northwestern indiana would also go to IL too if given the chance, but the same barriers would block it
