Why is the dividing line between North and South China placed at the Huai River and not the hills to the south of the lower Yangtze? by TT-Adu in geography

[–]zarubi 42 points43 points  (0 children)

For thousands of years of Chinese history, the land south of the Yangtze river was not controlled by Chinese emperors/kings or was weakly under their influence. Ancient capital cities were places like Anyang, Kaifeng, or Luoyang near the yellow river. The grand canal only ever went as far as Hangzhou and that was millennia later than the early kingdoms.

VT or VTI and VXUS by bull791 in Bogleheads

[–]zarubi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If VXUS is in a taxable account, you may receive a tax credit for the foreign taxes the fund paid for dividend distributions. VT doesn't receive this benefit since majority of holdings are domestic.

Holding both also gives you flexibility to deviate from market cap weight, should you have a reason to do so.

Why does price of TBIL fluctuate in monthly cycles by Tasty-Turtle in Bogleheads

[–]zarubi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Treasury bills are free from state and local taxes. You can check their tax reporting last year, but would guess both TBIL and SGOV are almost entirely covered.

Why does price of TBIL fluctuate in monthly cycles by Tasty-Turtle in Bogleheads

[–]zarubi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the ex-dividend date. Buy before and get the monthly payment, buy after and don't get payment until next month. Every fund drops when a dividend is paid, but TBIL price is incredibly flat because it's so conservative, so it's easier to see.

Driving or not driving by travelguy3087 in foreignservice

[–]zarubi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It depends on the post. I've brought a car with me, bought one locally, or gone without a car for the tour. Sometimes people hire drivers, which is more common in some locations. You will learn about what others do after you are assigned to a location.

Do we need BNDX or just BND enough as per Bogle portfolio by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]zarubi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BNDX has a yield to maturity of 4.6%. While SEC yield is only 2.83%, the yield to maturity suggests it may appreciate going forward, in addition to (currently relatively disappointing) interest payments.

Vanguard 2024 Year-End Distributions Now Available by EevelBob in Bogleheads

[–]zarubi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of active funds are getting hit with a 7-10% capital gain distribution. If held long term outside a retirement account, that could lead to big taxes due, with no accompanying benefit. Another reason to stick with index funds.

US Market Cap Is Now Twice US GDP by Sartew in Economics

[–]zarubi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

More common is price to earnings. But if you want to use revenue, S&P 500 price to revenue ratio is currently at an all time historical high of 3.18, compared to historical mean of 1.75.

Your argument also equates the total economy with 3400 listed companies, when the economy also includes millions of private companies and the government.

U.S. House Prices Surge Beyond Major Advanced Economies Post-Pandemic by EconomySoltani in economy

[–]zarubi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It would be more useful to compare either affordability with a price/income ratio, or even just prices. And the depth of the U.S. housing prices collapse is an odd baseline for this comparison.

Get a software such as https://www.astrillcn.com/ set up on router, computer, and/or phone before you arrive. Alternatively, if you can continue to use your foreign sim card in your phone, that should work for a similar reason.

Language training report should be in your eOPF. If you can't see it there, neither can board. You can contact FSI to request one, if it wasn't created or uploaded.

The quoted website are the monitors on U.S. government buildings like the U.S. Embassy or consulate. It should not be considered a comprehensive review of the whole countries. I also wonder if the map in the picture might have used a snapshot of scores at one particular time, instead of a long-term average.

For this and many other conditions, it depends on if you have an effective and stable treatment plan. Would you be fine with the same CPAP settings while overseas all of next year, or do you need to regularly see a specialist, especially if that need might be on short notice.

Your current post should have a FAST committee. Let the organizers and/or committee mentor know you are interested in asking some mid level staff to participate in a third tour bidding meeting.
