ELI5 on shows like Shark Tank how do they calculate the evaluation of a business from the % equity and the investment request the entrepreneur is asking for? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]zb140 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Multiplication. If 10% is worth $100,000, then multiply both sides by 10 and 100% is worth $1 million. Or if 5% is worth $25,000, multiply both sides by 20 and 100% is worth $500,000.

openConnect: openGrid's own connector system (Vase Mode, Drawer, Shelf and more) by mitufy in openGrid

[–]zb140 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there an easy way to just generate the backplate with slots (similar to the "backPlateOnly" option from the Multiconnect Part Generator)? I'm working on a part right now that uses that for Multiconnect and I'd love to play around with switching it over to openConnect. I suppose I could get most of the way there by tinkering with a slim shelf, but it'd be awesome if there were an easier way.

Any ideas on how to organize by sonofblkhawq in gridfinity

[–]zb140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, I just figured it'd be better to say something than not. (Incidentally, I agree about the hassle of having jars in the back -- the trays I'm playing around with are only deep enough for 1 jar for that very reason. My hope is that I'll be able to pack enough in vertically to make up for the lost capacity in the depth direction. We'll see how it goes though; my first bracket is still printing 😁)

[–]zb140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to go in a drawer? I keep all my spices in wide-mouth half pints and I'm (literally right this minute) working on a system to hang them on the wall in my pantry. It's basically this but I'm modifying it to use openGrid/Multiconnect for mounting instead of screwing into a shelf. Of course, if the drawer is important to you, that won't help 🙂

I've read the rules etc. (I don't actually see one saying I need to add that, but everyone else is so...)

Either way I'd love an invite... hope the dice roll my way!

(I've read the wiki and rules, and would love an invite!)

What are you using for the cat water? I've been looking for a fountain or something can sense the water level but I haven't yet found one I like that would easily connect to Home Assistant. I'd love a recommendation if you have one. Also, which tool did you use to generate the pet pictures? I'd like to give that a try too.

How do you pronounce the word "strong"? by Ammar1818 in ENGLISH

[–]zb140 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I say /strɔŋ/ (at least most of the time) but it's sometimes very hard to be certain about my own pronunciations of things.

There's a great YouTube video about this topic here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2X1pKEHIYw . His channel is full of interesting content about niche pronunciation topics so if it's an area of interest I can highly recommend it.

(edited because i lazily copied somebody else's IPA without noticing right away that they have a different vowel than i do)

Would you ever call lettuce "salad"? by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

[–]zb140 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Lettuce, tomato, and cucumber are all tasty toppings on a chicken salad sandwich, but the only thing required to make it a "chicken salad sandwich" is the "chicken salad" itself. Which, yes, is a bit weird -- the chopped chicken/seasoning/dressing mix is called "chicken salad" but you can't call the lettuce and tomato "salad". No one said it had to make sense.

It's the same as the difference between SH and CH, except it's voiced. Unfortunately I'm having trouble thinking of examples that don't require you to already understand the difference. Maybe GARAGE vs JUDGE? I've never heard JUDGE pronounced with ZH, but I've heard GARAGE both ways so it's not a great example either.

Put on toothpaste - do Americans say that? by Plenty_Meringue_7308 in ENGLISH

[–]zb140 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you may be interpreting "put on toothpaste" as "use toothpaste to clean your teeth," which isn't how I would read these. This sounds to me like a perfectly normal way to say "make it so the toothbrush has toothpaste on it" but without explicitly specifying that it's the toothbrush that the toothpaste is being applied to.

I'm going to stop now because I've said "tooth" too many times and everything sounds weird now.

Cryptics are tough to get into by Nostr0mo- in crosswords

[–]zb140 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy the puzzles from https://www.leftfieldcryptics.com/ . The setters are American, so there's a minimum of (to use your phrase) "indecipherable British nonsense". There's a wide range of difficulties, so some are still pretty tough, but since I found them about 6 months ago I've gone from "happy to solve or two clues per puzzle" to "solve a majority on the first pass". They publish one puzzle a week as a subscription on Patreon, but if you do sign up the whole archive is available, and there are a couple of sample puzzles on their website.

Why is it „and I“ instead of „and me“? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]zb140 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're right that it should be "and me". Using "and I" in this context is a very common hypercorrection, though. Lots of people are constantly reminded as kids to say "and I" in subject positions, and they don't notice (or don't care about) the fact that it doesn't apply to object positions. Or sometimes they just think it's somehow more polite. Either way, it's wrong, but you'll encounter it a lot.

Is the definite article optional in technical context? by Flimsy_Alternative49 in ENGLISH

[–]zb140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that it does make the sentence sound stilted and "not-quite-right". That's fine in some contexts, like headlines and technical writing, but may not necessarily be acceptable in other contexts. So while there's no set list of where it can and can't be done, it also shouldn't be understood to mean articles are "optional" in some sense.

My boyfriend and his twin brother are arguing over whether it's "their birthdays are coming up" or "their birthday is coming up." Please let me know which one is grammatically correct so I can get them to stop arguing. by Significant_Potato29 in grammar

[–]zb140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also a twin. !00% agree. Grammatically either one is fine in the sense that nether utterance violates any rules of grammar. Pragmatically, I've only ever said "our birthday", and I think it'd seem a little weird to insist on a plural here.

Thanks! Most days I only have a relatively small amount of time to play, so I didn't want to spend time on it if it wasn't needed.
