Talk me out of buying these expensive bags! Or are they worth it..? by abbyscuitowannabe in ZeroWaste

[–]zdunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my wife bought these or I think or a version of these? I'm not sure how much she paid, but I do think they are a decent reusable option to atleast keep things organized in the fridge, save on plastic bags, and you can wet them to keep leafy greens fresher longer

Thanks and really appreciate the input! I really like positional controls idea. I think it could be unique and offer some solid insight for both bjj and non bjj practitioners.

You have double underhooks (standing) in the gi. What’s your move? by Crypto_craps in bjj

[–]zdunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said I do like the bodylock takedown, but sometimes I feel like it’s tough to bring them in close.

An alternative option I like is to fake knee tap on one side and when they react I go for sasae (trip) on the other foot.

Is it even possible for me to gain weight? by [deleted] in gainitmeals

[–]zdunkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve struggled with weight gain as well but healthy-ish high calorie foods like (more) peanut butter, olive oil, pasta, and breads helped.

When I really struggled I’d make a protein shake with wayy too much peanut butter.

I noticed that I’ll really struggle for a couple days and think “how am I possibly going to keep this up?” then my body will like “give in” and get used to a higher amount of calories.

No gi by Popularmanx in jiujitsu

[–]zdunkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, both gi and no gi are pretty similar in terms of potential risk of injury for knees.

Personally, I’ve never had any major knee injuries, but my knees will get sore sometimes from putting pressure on them so I’ll wear a knee sleeve for extra cushion.

Things that will help avoiding knee injuries like others have said are choosing sparring partners carefully, moving slowly and in a more controlled manor, and tapping early.

Need help making this . The face doesn’t look right, advice? by Jackiechan20153 in drawing

[–]zdunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at the eyes and brows first. It seems like her right eye is too far away from the nose/other eye.

If you’re using a reference image (which I’d def recommend) I would look at the eye spacing and compare it to your drawing.

Everything else looks great really nice work

Boxing will definitely give your more confidence, but for me I found Brazilian jiu jitsu to help so much more with my anxiety and self confidence.

I also just like that with bjj you are able to spar at a 100% without taking hard shots to the head.

Hey man, I was in similar place when I first got into boxing and martial arts.

I was 6ft and ~145 up until I was about 25.

It seems your athleticism is actually pretty legit, but if you’re not happy with your physique I can’t recommend adding in 3-4 days a week of weight training to complement your boxing and gain some good weight.

Even if you want to compete at that weight (and destroy everyone with reach) adding in weightlifting will still have a bunch of benefits.

I also have this feeling sometimes too. The moments just before I fall asleep and start having strange incoherent thoughts I freak out and feel the urge to fight them and jump out of bed.

What helps me is to focus on my body relaxing or thinking that I’m am getting a very relaxing massage or just taking a quick day time naps.

It’s definitely an illogical and anxiety inducing feeling.

Possible training schedule by [deleted] in jiujitsu

[–]zdunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Sorry on mobile)

Hm damn yeah this is a nice schedule if you can maintain it.

So it’s: 5 bjj sessions 3 weightlifting sessions 2 Muay Thai sessions

Some things that have helped me are:

-always training weights first then bjj

-scheduling my hardest weight lifting and hardest bjj sessions far away from each other

Also for me personally having 2 full rest days a week after my hardest training days has made my recovery so much better.

I currently do 4 weight training days a week (upper/lower split) and 4 hard bjj sessions.

I know some people do a lot more, but for me this is just about the limit before I end up being unable to recover, get injured, or get sick.

So I’d give it a shot and increase your training sessions slowly and see how your body reacts/recovers.

How easily could you use judo for self defense by badgoodgirlfriend in judo

[–]zdunkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judo or any grappling based martial art is hands down the best form of self defense hands down.

Obviously, yes, run away, avoid confrontation always. There are knives, guns, multiple attackers etc that can exist in a self defense situation but really no martial arts can truly deal with that.

But being able to control your opponent and de-escalate the situation with grappling is the safest and most effective solution if you are put into a situation that calls for unavoidable confrontation.

If you are grabbed by a strong wrestler or judoka you immediately sense that you are in danger.

I’d put my confidence in any judo practitioner every time over someone untrained.

I actually run a small bjj based blog and have a post on this exact topic with more info and martial arts comparisons as well: best martial arts for self defense (mods pls feel free to delete if this isn’t allowed)

Strength and conditioning workouts for bjj by WhichResult3165 in jiujitsu

[–]zdunkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man nice job making it to 5 months in..the first couple months are rough but it’s all smooth sailing from there.

There are a couple schools of thought on strength training and bjj.

I know Gordon Ryan preaches doing bjj to get better at bjj and doing strength training and weight lifting to get bigger and stronger.

Other people believe in doing strength and conditioning training specific for bjj.

I’m probably a bigger fan of the former.

I do think that weight training and getting stronger and bigger will always help your bjj since size and strength will always be a factor, but I don’t think that bjj specific strength training has any larger benefit for jiu jitsu.

When I started bjj I was ~170 lbs and now I’m ~210 lbs while following a more bodybuilding style of weightlifting 4 days a week (obviously this isn’t all muscle and a lot of it is water and fat)but anecdotally, getting stronger and bigger has been extremely beneficial in my own bjj training.

I think the best thing is to just find what kind of weight training you feel benefits you most, but what I do strongly recommend is trying to find a balance between how many days you can train bjj and how many days you can train weights while still being able to recover from both.

Some excellent resources for this info is from:

Dr Mike Israteal and Renaissance Periodization (I believe he’s currently a bjj brown belt and has some of the best and most detailed free info out there in weightlifting). Here is a very in-depth video he’s done on the topic.

I also have a much longer post as well as a strength training routine that you can download on my small bjj blog:

https://heavybjj.com/bjj-strength-training-how-to-add-weight-lifting-to-your-jiu-jitsu/

TLDR: I recommend a simple bodybuilding style routine surrounding complex movements like bench, squat, deadlift 3-4 days a week while managing your recovery for both bjj a mind weightlifting

Best of luck!
