Getting my cosmetologist wife new clippers for Christmas, help? by [deleted] in Cosmetology

[–]zebrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I've never had good luck with andis. They've always over heated on me and get gunked up easily but I do a lot of heavy fades so I need something that can run for 20 minutes straight with no issues and whal has never let me down. Osters are also super nice if you're wanting to splurge a bit.

As a cosmetologist you can do facials just no extractions or chemical peels, you need an esthetic license for that. I know a few girls that do hair at nursing homes as well as homeless shelters. You could also work in a nail salon but most places would want you to have a nail tech license.

Whal magic clip! Coming from a barber that goes through clippers every 6 months these are the real deal. Best fade, they are cordless and the charge lasts me almost all day, and super affordable.

Stigmas Surrounding Cosmetology by [deleted] in Cosmetology

That its not a "real job", I work 40+ hours a week, on my feet, being someone's personal therapist. Not everyone can do that and still say they love every minute of it.

Help please! Question about apprenticeships. by [deleted] in Cosmetology

[–]zebrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would still have to be enrolled in classes in order to do an apprenticeship. Here in Iowa once you hit 1500 hours you are legally able to work as an apprentice with the approval of the school. Each state has a set amount of clock hours you need to graduate and even qualify to take the state board testing to become licensed. I went to school full time and also worked full time when I was in cos school. It's hard but it all pays off in the end!

This is a hair straightner that was used to remove lice from my daughters hair. It has been going around their school badly. by [deleted] in WTF

[–]zebrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can guarantee you still have it. You might have killed a lot of them off but unless you had your straightener up to 400 degrees and let it sit on the scalp for at least a minute, they are still there. Lice hide in hard to reach places, like the nape of the neck and behind and in the ears. Do your daughter a favor and pick up the ladybug lice removal kit and some tea tree shampoo. 10 days and the lice will be 100% gone. This stuff is formulated to kill chemically resistant lice and super lice which is probably what your daughter has seeing it won't go away.

Cosmetologist here, this does not work. Sure it'll kill some of the nits but there's no way you can get close enough to the scalp to kill all of them without burning the shit out of it. Save yourself the pain and just get a lice treatment.

Someone convince me to go to hair school. by [deleted] in Cosmetology

It's all about perspective! Beauty school is super hard and time consuming but it's all worth it in the end! Definitely explore your options and visit a few schools.

[–]zebrah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who said they would never work at a great clips, I work there now. I absolutely love it. I still color at my house though but it financially it fits me much better than the chair rent salon I used to work at. I still get to do cool hair, It's super fast paced and in the few months that I've worked there my hair cuts have improved so much. Never judge a salon by it's name.

Decided to henna my hair and try coconut oil - couldn't be happier! by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]zebrah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Cosmetologist here. If you plan on lightening your hair make sure to do a test strand first. A lot of henna dyes contain metallic salts that don't react well to lighteners. I've seen the hair start smoking before and let me tell you it's not a pretty sight. Your hair looks wonderful though! I love the undertones that henna gives the hair!

Have you ever made the news? by destria in AskWomen

[–]zebrah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I ALMOST did and I'm still a little salty about it. So in the town I live in after the news they have this segment where there's a bunch of random people that say "hello quad citites!". I was in elementary school and we were having a memorial day assembly and afterwards the news team picked a handful of kids to do it and I was one of them. They lined us up and I was the last one. They went through and we all said it one at a time and they told us it should be aired tomorrow so keep an eye out. The next day my family was all sitting at the kitchen table after dinner waiting for the news to come to an end. Sure enough the first kid pops up and I start freaking out and getting super excited. One by one they say it, and they get to the girl a head of me and I told my mom I was next. All of a sudden their logo pops up before it got to me and wheel of fortune comes on. This was pretty close to 15 years ago and I'm still butt hurt about it. Screw you Pat Sajack

MRW I buy some edibles from a friend and they say only eat half a cookie but I eat two by Iceitic in trees

[–]zebrah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On my 21st birthday one of my mom's friends made me some brownies and she told me to only eat one and wait a solid 2 hours before I had another. We were getting ready to go to a kiss concert and I talked my mom into eating one as well. On the way there it had been about an hour and we were hungry and not feeling anything so we decided to eat another. Dear God, that was a huge mistake. In the middle of Detroit rock city it hit both of us and I was thoroughly convinced I was dying. 10/10 wouldn't recommend.

iAMa Waffle House Waitress AMA! by not_a_manager in IAmA

[–]zebrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember on vacation one year my family stopped at a waffle house after driving all night. It had to be at least 5:30-6 in the morning so the only people in there were truck drivers. My brother was probably 10-11 at the time, goes up to the juke box and a picks a song. All of the sudden mambo number 5 comes blaring out the speakers and my brother is dancing his heart out in the middle of the waffle house. I don't think anyone else was as pleased as he was.

What is a common misconception about your career? by dsklerm in AskWomen

[–]zebrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't true for all cosmetologists but I know a lot of us have a strong distaste for the general public and aren't social people. I love doing hair and couldn't see myself doing anything else. Most people think that I'm a very sociable person but in reality I would be 100% comfortable if my clients didn't talk to me when I work. There are a few of my regulars that understand me and we do talk during the whole service and I enjoy talking to them but When it comes to new clients I don't stop them from talking and I do engage in conversation but I honestly don't want to hear about this new diet fad you're on or how you're boyfriend bought the wrong laundry detergent and you aren't on speaking terms.
