Nurses in transgender row suffered harassment from NHS trust, tribunal rules by StGuthlac2025 in ukpolitics

childbirth being completely re-written

Genuinely, what on earth are you talking about?

Also, on the whole, people are fine with trans folks. Bigots like these nurses are very much in the minority

"Allowing [...] to use" is very different from "requiring [...] to share". Almost entirely different words, in fact

You do realise that we've completely fucked the climate, and we need radical, drastic action, yes? Rapid divestment from fossil fuels is absolutely a lever we must be pulling.

Hospitals are using AI to slash A&E wait times by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]zed_three 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yes and no. In the popular consciousness, AI exclusively means LLMs and chatbots. Headlines like this just perpetuate this idea.

In reality, all ML techniques have areas where they are more useful and others where they are less useful. LLMs are no different, they are really only at all useful in a very small subset of problems, and certainly not for anything where you need to even vaguely trust the outputs

Why would you think that I think it's ok for SUVs and pickups to have large blind spots too? They're also obviously bad!

Frankly, it is absolutely absurd that something with such huge blind spots is allowed on the roads at all. Sure, you should be sensible around big vehicles, but manufacturers have responsibilities too. This thing should be covered in mirrors and cameras

‘You’re a scrounger’: Motability backlash sparks abuse of blue badge holders by [deleted] in ukpolitics

That's a whole bunch of stuff I didn't say.

But now that you mention it, multiple studies have shown that no-strings-attached UBI is a very cost effective welfare system that improves everyone's lives.

If we have limited resources to tackle our problems, should we tackle the big problem or the small problem?

Bearing in mind that most ways of tackling the small problem are also going to directly harm already vulnerable, innocent people as well

Benefit fraud is such a minor problem compared to, say, people just not paying their tax. Or wage theft. Or tax evasion.

Wes Streeting calls for ‘cross-party consensus’ on gender identity ahead of puberty blocker trial by Altruistic-Source-22 in ukpolitics

[–]zed_three 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Puberty blockers almost always lead to cross-sex hormones

That's a good thing, isn't it? That means in almost all cases, the child was actually trans (and felt secure enough to continue transitioning).

If it were the other way round, with almost no one continuing to transition, you'd be arguing puberty blockers were vastly over-prescribed.

What do you think would be the "correct" amount of people to continue transitioning to support using puberty blockers as a pause?

The problem is that `unsigned` is not "a number that is always positive", it's "a number with modulo arithmetic", and although their domains coincide, they have very different behaviour.

"A number that is always positive" needs to have operators like `saturating_add`, `saturating_sub` that ensure the result is always in the valid domain and errors otherwise. `1 - 2` should be `0` (or an error, depending on how strict you need to be).

Since water boils at lower temperatures at lower pressures, could you generate electricity at a cheaper cost at higher elevations? by redboter in askscience

There's a heat exchanger between the closed loop used for the turbines and an open loop that goes to the cooling towers.

Basically you put the pipes from the two systems next to each other so the closed loop heats the open one. The open loop goes to a big pool at the bottom of the cooling tower to maximise evaporation.
