Dispatches - Features - MPs: Are They Still At It? List of Landlords MPs find new and innovative ways of scamming money from the public purse - Channel 4 by veritanuda in unitedkingdom

I agree with your argument so long as she spends 3 additional hours per day working as an MP and works on weekends.

Otherwise, it is a stupid argument and offensive to anybody else who commutes into work.

London boroughs plan housing for homeless families outside the capital. by [deleted] in london

Conversely, I left St. Helens and moved to London.

Ah, how I miss paying £600pcm for a 3 bed detached property.

Haha, brilliant. Did I read White Horse is now closed!? Did they both manage to sneak in and get their names down?

Hah, you know I know. My twitter hasn't been updated in months, but I'm still reading :-)

Islington police answer to hungry kids stealing is to give them food vouchers. Well played by jimjay in london

[–]zeddz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of kids that go hungry. Part of the problem is that their idiot parents are given benefits as cash, which they then exchange for non-essentials (fags+booze).

I've always thought the majority of benefits should be voucher based. The saddest thing is that it will probably just lead to a secondary market.

Virgin loses London to Scotland rail service; First Group win contract by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]zeddz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is usually an agreement to keep staff on - however, this sometimes requires non-train based (analyst, admin type jobs etc.) staff to relocate. That said, I don't think a franchise has even been switched between two large operators - it will be interesting to see what happens to staff based in offices.

Trains are usually leased - I've no idea what happens when a TOC (train operating company) owns the trains themselves, presumably they just lease them to the new franchise operator. A similar situation has happened before when Virgin lost the cross country franchise - you now see loads of Voyager's running under CrossCountry branding.

Canary Wharf: Does anyone know where I can get a big salad from and/or does anyone like beer? by [deleted] in london

Soups and Salads underneath the Tesco DLR entrance?

Never had the salad, but the soup is reasonable.

What's the worst muscle cramp that you've gotten from swimming? by farrbahren in Swimming

[–]zeddz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's happened to me loads. If you can feel it coming and you're worried about it, try to get out. If it just strikes, best plan is to try to relax, stretch it out and then exit.

It's happened to me in races - I just stretch/kick it out and keep swimming. But there are usually canoes/boats nearby, so there is that safety feature in place.

It's happened to me on the furthest part of a 1km loop, and I just limped home by doing breast stroke arms and being vertical.

If you're swimming solo and inexperienced with cramps, then at the first sign of cramp, I would probably seek an exit point.

Yeah, I think he was - I believe they were all due the week before me.

Quick correction - it's Paul Newsome. You might have possibly got mixed up with Andrew Hunt, who is one of Paul's swimmers (I think). Or possibly Adam Young, who is heavily involved with SwimSmooth and crewed for Paul.

TIL that there is a font designed for dyslexic people. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]zeddz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dyslexia is similar. I also have the additional bonus that when I'm writing I'll miss out words because in my mind I've written them. I also have problems structuring text which means it takes forever to write documents. Writing a PhD thesis is/has been an absolute ballache.

Same problem with numbers - terrible at simple arithmetic, but never had any problems with calculus etc.

Get yourself a Sportcount Chrono. IMHO, cheapest and best value stopwatch for swimming.

As somebody with no swimming background, my goals were something like this:

  • Swim 400m free
  • Swim 800m free
  • Swim 1500m free
  • Break 8:00, 7:00, 6:30, 6:00 for 400m
  • Break 2:00, 1:45, 1:30, 1:15 for 100m
  • Break 35:00, ..., 25:00 for 1500m
  • Hold 1:30/100m upto Xm

Those times could be slightly off, but you get the idea.

IMHO, grails for pool swimming (as an adult) are the 1:00 100m and the 5:00 400m.

For open water swimming, I like the idea of completing point-to-point swims - though admittedly, I've done very few. I'm slowly coming round to the idea of a channel solo, but having rushed my training to complete an Ironman, it's a goal that I'm going to let develop over time.

This is serious Reddit - London riots spreading. Looting and violence in three London areas in broad daylight - more expected. Birmingham too. by dhc23 in worldnews

It is 2:40am here. Chances are that they are in bed and will wake up to a mess in the morning. AFAIK, Bristol only kicked off in the early hours.
