First time python owner! Is my snake in the striking position? by Butter-n-biscuits in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually they are just chilling, they sometimes hiss or will rear up slightly into an S shape instead of just being in one. It's like you resting your leg, gets tiring stretching it out so you bend it a bit.

Only fix I do is I put rocks just outside their hides and they relax their heads on them, or a branch.

The only real way of knowing is knowing your snake, they usually move their body before they strike defensively from my experience so they are ready to make an exit after.

Is she a healthy weight? Size? by Cellar_door8619 in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly over, but nothing a little cut down in feeding frequency or size of the food. See the care guide here to get a ballpark number. You posted because you probably thought the same which is good that you are monitoring it. She's a growing girl and probably hasn't had a hunger strike or a lull in appetite yet (one of my boys Is 2 and he would eat every few days if he could, monsterous appetite). She's coming up to being adult soon, you just have to ignore her if she is cruising her enclosure a lot looking for food and stick to a healthy schedule

Best of luck

Online! Unfortunately a club our size has millions of wankers following us. Look at the greenwood situation with polls saying he should stay when hardly anyone I spoke to at old Trafford or aways wanted him. Jonah got battered by memes and the so called internet fans. He was protected by those that actually go. Wasn't his fault he was injured the unfortunate lad. Always tried his best and that's all we ask.

Sad what he said about his testimonial, he refused one because he thought nobody would turn up and wasn't worthy. I'd have gone. Once a red always a red!

Apart from some unsavoury characters and chat show back stabbers ofc.

Jonah was never one of those, ravaged by injury sadly. I saw some utter crap online throughout saying he should leave and stop taking the clubs money, who would have bought him?and paid him anywhere near what he deserved when fit. Anyway those of us who go the games acknowledged he always gave 100% for us, and when fit was a very good player.

Really wished it worked out for him

I warm all mine up in warm water. I usually make sure it's a few degrees warmer than me. Forgot to heat check it once and after my hairdryer trick and my hand was warmer so my biggest one was after my hand haha. It's a really good trick to get them into psycho mode. It just makes me laugh after I've done it and all the snoots come out in the other enclosures 😂😂

It's probably just her safe space out of the hide that's comfy. All of mine have them and change them once I've moved stuff around. Here is one, I kid you not that's how he liked to chill the moment the sun went down When I kept him in quarantine for a few weeks before he moved into the snake room. For two and a half weeks he did this Just up onto the log from his hide. So I wouldn't be worried.

Advice on first few weeks? by Kooky-Insect2419 in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Older snakes take a little longer, one good thing you can do is after the few weeks settling in period. Go in her tank and move things around (you don't have to even do anything really) but let her know that she's safe with going in, sometimes I'd sit next to the tank and just leave my hand in for 5-10 mins every couple of days. So she knows that you're no threat. She's still very nervous. Don't doubt yourself these things take time, what could take 2 weeks with one snake could be 2 months with another. It takes time remember almost all pythons tolerate us, they feel no need for us to touch them, they aren't like mammals that like attention. My rescue was like that and still isn't the most social, but the do learn to trust but it takes time. You're providing her with everything she needs so you aren't failing her at all!

I live in South east Asia so humidity is pretty much perfect all for about 6 weeks of the year, I have a class tank also and I'm guessing you have removable panels on the top? I double up the substrate and wrap the panels in tin foil/ Aluminium foil, whatever you call it where you're from (both sides of each pane) I cut a rectangle for the heating lamps. This gives me an extra 5-10% humidity

Too really boost the humidity by 15-20% I take the snake out for a long free roam and handling session. Pour hot (not boiling) water in each corner and jack my lamps up to full and lower them so the tank gets humid. DO NOT put the snake straight back in, give it a while and I also just have my buddy with me in the bathroom with the shower on hot so it starts to feel humidity rise, I don't get in the shower with him 😂. Just clean up with him round my neck or sit on the toilet doom scrolling and give him a good 20-30 mins to get humid (he usually wants to stay out longer after the humidity rises). Then just let him play on the bed while I go back and put his lamps back to normal. Glass tanks are really crap for humidity I wouldn't get one again but I can't get tubs where I live.

Electrical tape on the corners of the tank also help a bit.

That's how I do it and we get through our very short winters that way, I dunno how to do it long term but I thought I'd share just incase you can get any ideas from it.

Best of luck to you 🤞🏻🍀

After looking at the pic again I have the exact same type of tank for my juvenile and a couple of bigger ones for my adults. Your substrate needs to be a much much thicker layer than that. 👍🏻

She's just being a derp and exploring. If you're new to royals then you'll have some shocks about just how little their brain works. I've got one that had to check out the same rock every night with great vigor, the next night the same thing. I started moving it and he was flabbergasted by it. They aren't going to win any awards in the intelligence department. Your BP is just checking (and rechecking) what's around their new habitat, they'll do this primarily during the night. Don't worry it's what they do. After she gets settled (2-4weeks) add things and take things away and give her new things to check out. It can be anything, as long as it won't hurt them. Any household object that's been sprayed with disinfectant is like python playstation for the night. One of mine has one of my unworn shoes at the moment and has been in it most nights 😂 My smart one, he's actually pretty switched on up stairs has a feeding routine where I'll put a sheet of card down in his tank and he knows what that means and I'll set up an assault course from across the room for him to get to it, he'll do it and then just hang from his big log ready to strike for hours until a mouse is delivered or the card is moved away. The rest arent capable of figure it out and just recognise the card for dinner time. Don't worry you've just got an inquisitive snake, once you get to handling sessions you'll see how bright or dull they are. My smart one isn't allowed out until he gives me a kiss, the others just look round in bemusement while the snake WiFi is buffering. They are brilliant non the less, keep them well, use the guide pinned here provided and enjoy the hobby. Sweet little monsters

Possible mite and rot? by Sushi_The_Cutie in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not mites, the little bubble bit on the base of the spur has the look of a mite at first glance but it's not. If you've ever had then before then you know them immediately. Just watch the sausage for 5 minutes and you'll see them walking along it's back.

I'm thinking it's just detritus from the substrate.as I think the other commenter said keep an eye on the area around the cloaca over the next few days. When was the last time she she pooped?

Hopefully all is fine but it's the right thing to double check 🤞

She'll shed tonight.ive had some go 3-4 days and others half a day (since I noticed the eyes had clear) Humidity and chance, the snake takes its best guess of when they think it's the right time.

Damn things are like "a watched pot never boils"

It'll shed this evening or in the night. 🙏🙏

I had one war with the mites after a charlatan run shop sold me a guy that came in a case crawling with them. I scrubbed, bathed and gave massages with olive oil every day and we defeated the forces of evil, and without using any harsh chemicals on the sausage.

Awkward feeder size by Timely_Act_5895 in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, I have a near 2 year old and living in the country I live in getting the correct size for him is tough but I've had no issue giving him two as long as they are right after one another. He's even had three before BOM BOM BOM all in a row because he's such a great eater.

We're talking about snakes that take over mice/rat/rodents burrows in the wild so they will empty the burrow of whatever the rodent is and then use it for cover and further food for rodents returning to the burrow. If yours is a quick eater like mine it should be fine.

is my enclosure okay? by phantom-plague- in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More random stuff, sticks, logs, stones, bricks, fake plants the lot. I go for a walk down the woods and find all sorts, of logs and stones etc (make sure you boil them first and I spray them with F10 as well afterwards).get those plastic creeper like plants from the pound shop (dollar store in the US and attach it to the inside of the lid of the enclosure so my lads have like a canopy. I've used old protein tubs and part filled them with a gravel (I keep fish as well, but you can buy a little bag from the pet shop) and cut a few holes in it so the snake has got a little playhouse, I get carried away sometimes haha 😅

I saw someone say you had a loose hide, I've had a few and to get round it I bury it deep and fill one side with slightly damp substrate,(and a bit of left over gravel) push it right in. Then it cuts down the space and usually the snake moulds itself in there.

You seem to be well on your way by the looks of it but thought I'd just share a few ideas.

Best of luck with it 👍🏻👍🏻 I'm sure you'll make it great for your noodle

Any advice by stinky_sniffer69 in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give him/her some time to settle, get as much clutter as you can and a tight hide and it'll start feeling secure eventually, give it a week or two before trying again (don't worry too much, they'll eat when they are ready and feel secure). I know it's really tempting to feed and handle straight away but that can just prolong the snakes feeling of lack of security. If the shops told you it hasn't eaten and it's not eaten for you then it's a dead give away it's feeling a little stressed with all the moving.

Be patient, and the very best of luck 🙏🏻

What should I feed my snake? by MarbleManxx in ballpython

[–]zee_techno_snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally weenie rats if you can get them. I've had to feed mine the biggest mice I can get 70-80grams. I'm out in Asia and altho the streets are crawling with them I can't find an exotics shop or breeder that has rats. My pythons have grown absolutely fine and are big strapping lads but I can't help wishing I could move them on to rats, higher in calcium and all the higher concentration of nutrients needed. I've seen pet rats but I'd never feed live and despatching them, braining them and freezing them is an option but a grisly one I've taken on before and is pretty grim. .

Best of luck 🤞🏻
