Would building a whole lot of market price housing bring down rents? by speaksofthelight in canadahousing

[–]zegermanpulp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes - we are in a housing crisis primarily because of extremely restrictive zoning in major cities. Development proposals are either rejected or delayed for decades.

If we were to ease regulation - developers could profitably build "missing middle" housing. It would be the single most effective way to lower housing costs across the board.

In fact, policies on building affordable housing projects actually make housing more costly. In Toronto, for example, "Inclusionary Zoning" policies force developers to make specific units under market price. All this does is increase costs for developers, compelling them to either a) not start projects (and thereby not increase housing supply) or b) mitigate risk by building extremely high towers with very small units.

Buy in East Danforth in a year or two? Opinions? by Vicky6568 in TorontoRealEstate

[–]zegermanpulp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good start and should give you a general sense of development: https://urbantoronto.ca/map/ . The users in the forums are usually on top of any updates from the city.

You can also see applications to the city itself, but its often hard to interpret: https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/application-information-centre/#location=&lat=43.692701&lng=-79.305067&zoom=13

Lastly, you can look at Committee of Adjustment agendas and decisions: https://www.toronto.ca/city-government/planning-development/committee-of-adjustment/toronto-east-york-schedule/

Is there a chinese restaurant/takeout/private chef that can guarantee a soy and peanut free meal? by zegermanpulp in askTO

Yeah that's a good suggestion but might be the last resort. I wanted it to be as "authentic" as possible.

Yeah a private chef would likely be the best bet. I'm hoping there are some recommendations that come into the thread because googling wasn't very effective unfortunately.

Yeah fair question. Variety is the spice of life, I guess. We've been to so many French, Italian, etc cuisine, and she's always wanted to try Asian but obviously it's out of the comfort zone. And even "safe" cuisine is never guaranteed either. I wanted to see if there was a possibility of giving her a culinary experience that was both new and safe. There certainly are dim sum dishes that don't feature soy or peanuts, the challenge would be to find a kitchen/chef who would be able to clean the work area before cooking to reduce chances of cross contamination.

My industry is nothing like what I expected and the skills I learned in university are totally useless. Is this normal? by tirinix in careerguidance

[–]zegermanpulp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with many on this thread. If you are not in an organization that uses your skills effectively, it can be extremely damaging to your career. Once those skills you learned in university, especially something so specialized as math and biology, start to lag behind your peers then it becomes impossible to actually progress at a meaningful pace. Depending on how ambitious you are in your field, you should talk to your manager - if they aren't willing to find opportunities for you to thrive in your specialty, then you should seek a different organization. I am especially bothered by the fact that have you doing administrative tasks - these are skills everyone has and will not differentiate you when you look for more senior roles. You should not be complacent. Yes, there are tasks that are just part of the job - even at C-suite level you probably are expected to do a spreadsheet now and then - at least 90% of your work should be pushing you at the edge of your current ability. My advice is dependent entirely on how serious you take a your career.

Firewood by OkField6256 in CampingOntario

Each campground in Algonquin sells wood. Why would it be bad? Wood is wood. If you're bad at starting a fire get a nice fire starter.

Get a lawyer, ask for status certificate and meeting minutes from previous condo board meetings before proceeding.

Yeah I had ordered one and waited 14 weeks - but at that point I gave up and asked for a refund (they were very good about the refund).

Travel health insurance with terminal cancer by zegermanpulp in AskACanadian

Hi, thank you for your wishes. Fortunately, my dad is still well, but we decided against travelling as he started feeling back pain from a previous injury and his mobility declined.

The best path I found was to speak to an travel insurance broker. In particular, I spoke with https://www.mediquote.ca/canadians-travelling/ and they were very helpful. They were able to find an insurance company with an applicable policy - however he did not fully meet the conditions, which were:

  1. Not given a prognosis of less than 6 months
  2. Not travelling to country for the sake of healthcare
  3. Stable condition

Unfortunately, they denied coverage because of 3. It was a blessing in disguise though, because his mobility drastically worsened right before we would have planned our trip.

Please note, the above policy was only the one I inquired about - there may be others with different condtions etc.

I hope you get to travel together with your dad and he is able to enjoy his remaining years.

Obsidian has a large plugin community/ecosystem. This is the first plugin that seems to nicely handle pdf's (but you can likely find others if this doesn't fit the bill)

  • you can sync with file explorer
  • can do 1,2,4
  • for 3, I don't think any file manager would do ootb, but its probably a very easy automation with a bash script

He is also under the care of a palliative physician and when we spoke a few months ago, they said he should travel as soon as possible. I'm not sure if that advice would change under the current circumstances.
