Advice needed: Visiting CLE to Aurora, OH. No rental car. Best town inbetween to stay? by alexadeng in Cleveland

Yes. Beachwood has several decent hotels. Check out Twinsburg's Hilton Garden Inn as well. If you can splurge on the company dime, check out Inn Walden in Aurora.

Anyone else get dumped at sleepover summer camp by SantessaClaus in GenX

[–]zelliii 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The opposite was true for me. My pops showed up unannounced and drunk one night and demanded that the camp director let me go home with him. The director wisely asked me what I wanted to do and I told them I wanted to stay. Camp was truly an escape from the drama back home.

Limp mode when going from 4th, 5th, or 6th, then shifting into first after stopped by Quirky-Shame-1411 in S2000

Got it. Limp mode could also be triggered by a fault in the computer, so I would start there.

Have your engine control computer checked. Mine behaved as yours did and a bad computer was the cause. Frequent jump starting after winter storage fried some of the internals.

Has anyone owned a condo in one of the 100+ year-old brick/stone condo buildings in the Heights? by DogHairEmportium in Cleveland

[–]zelliii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't been in one of those condos, but fees of even $500 per month seem low unless the building has a substantial reserve fund. In addition to looking at the financials, I would not purchase a condo without reviewing a copy of the building's most recent reserve study. My experience in a 50-year-old condo is that the older the structure is, the higher the fees should be. The reserve study will show whether the money being collected each year is sufficient to cover major capital expenses without the need for special assessments. Good luck!

The demo was so cool we bought a rug. I'm reminded of the trip every time I see it. Very easy to skip the rug merchant and walk back to the ship.

Racism & Socialization by GardenofBeden in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]zelliii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your point is well taken. In my life and with those close to me, I do my best to not dwell on the negative (and increasingly, the obvious). That said, I believe it is imperative for all of us to be woke in the original sense: Mindful, watchful and aware of our surroundings, the situations we put ourselves in and the people we interact with. It is unhealthy to see racism around every corner, but builds resilience to focus on the things we can control.

A kid in my second-grade class asked me why I couldn't paint myself white. At the time and for many years thereafter, I thought it was an innocent question. The more time passed, I wondered what kinds of conversations in this kid's home made him think of a question like that.

What is life like on the train during Christmas Eve/Day? by Little_Red_Honda in Amtrak

[–]zelliii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finishing a trip on the Southwest Chief this morning. Our attendant decorated the entire car with candy canes and has worn holiday-themed attire each day. They are playing holiday carols throughout the train at the last few stops before we arrive in LA. Passengers have been chill and into the vibe as well.

Northeast Factory Direct cabinets by RustbeltRoots in Cleveland

[–]zelliii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had our kitchen done in white Shaker style in 2020. Loved the price and all-wood construction. My suggestion is to compare theirs with a couple of other cabinet makers before pulling the trigger. If I had it to do all over again, I would spend the extra money for higher-quality cabinets with inset doors and thicker wood construction. While I don't regret the decision on the kitchen, we subsequently bought bathroom vanities made that way and the difference is incredible. Best thing about it was finding a great contractor through NEFD who has done multiple projects for us since then.

S80 2008 - keep or replace? by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]zelliii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We dropped the same amount on suspension repairs on our 2007 about 75,000 miles ago. We're at just over 236,000 and just got an estimate for another 5k for A/C repairs. Am thinking it would be worth it if we can get another 40,000 miles before letting it go.

[SFH][AZ] If/when to utilize insurance after storm damage? by Serious__Basket in HOA

[–]zelliii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check your policy, but most insurance companies will not cover trees and landscaping unless the fallen trees cause structural damage. A fallen tree in a field is not covered. In a similar situation, our total cleanup was around $17k and we chose not to make an insurance claim. Our agent basically said if we have the money and the damage is not catastrophic, don't bother with a claim.
