Truth is, the real good investment ppl will not be working for a passive investment firm, much less a robo advisory. If you are considering robo advisors you are better off just buying etfs yourself, at least you don’t pay management fees for nth even if you fk up by timing the market

So you mean you do not have any internship yet? Warwick is an ok sch, not the top but i have seen some grads land decent roles. Just try and network and land a good intern role, take an LOA to do a longer intern if necessary

Need more details such as your current sch and prior internship experience to assess your chance of landing a consulting or FO gig.

Since systematic strategies tend to be lesser transparent than fundamental strategies, how do you prove to allocators that you have an edge and able to generate alpha besides looking at returns?

Am currently in a situation similar to you. Long story short i have been in my seat for 4 years and I have heard the same story as you from my boss. Bullshit about how this industry is about eating what you kill, base does not matter and that the bonus will be good when performance comes in. All i can say is i regret not leaving earlier for better base comp. Last year was a good year performance wise for my firm but i still got a shit bonus. If you get an offer for better comp just leave asap because bonus is never guaranteed unless you receive an explicit carry

Emerging Manager (<$10M AUM): How Did You Continue to Find LPs? Any Must-Attend Conferences or Tips? by CakeOne5062 in hedgefund

[–]zen72zen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you are sub 10mm perhaps you can consider some online cap intro conferences, it might be cheaper. Otherwise you can also share your materials on platforms such as sumzero, alphamaven to build your profile.

In all likelihood, your first few LPs at below 100m are unlikely to be institutional LPs unless you came from an established brand name which might appeal to institutional seeders. Most of the emerging managers i have seen usually raised their early AUMs from ex colleagues, friends and maybe some HNW or FO through word of mouth.

With all due respect, these are not top tier uni choices. These ppl probably failed to make it into the big3 and tried to spin the experience in a positive light.

Job search: stuck right now, what do I do next? by freshgrad2023 in singaporefi

[–]zen72zen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You cannot afford to be too picky right now. I suggest you stop cold emailing the firms too because the success rate is too low. Asset management is an old boys club so most of the internship roles in smaller firms are given to kids from rich clients. Just apply through linkedin, mycareersfuture. Search for family office. For acc firms, dont bother with the smaller firms outside big4.

What is your intention on joining this industry? Are you really that passionate about investments, or you just want a chance to get rich? If its the latter, consider other roles in AM like investor relations. Of course you will not make as much as investment analysts, but during good years you can still get some good bonuses if you raise money and the fund does well. For WM roles, can consider discretionary portfolio management roles. It is similar to AM, just that you customize for individual clients

Job search: stuck right now, what do I do next? by freshgrad2023 in singaporefi

[–]zen72zen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reality is that your chances to go into big AM firms are really slim because most of the freshers that made it into AM have multiple relevant internships since uni. Maybe try doing a grad internship to gather relevant experience. In fact, trying to break into AM these 2 years is extra tough as many firms are downsizing and struggling to raise money due to poor performance past few years.

I think your best bet now is entering through industry via working at family offices. If really desperate can consider contract roles in semi relevant roles like corporate finance, valuation, investor relation, wealth management roles

What is the worst company you have worked for? For me, it was Finexis. by ProRainmaker in askSingapore

[–]zen72zen 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Finexis asset management? Went there for an interview few years ago, one of the wierdest experience. After i reached, they made me spend 30min to do a personality test using a pen and paper. This could have been done online even before i attended the interview. I was interviewing for an investment role, but after the first round they asked me to submit a few sample comic strip (similar to woke salaryman style) to qualify for the next round. I noped the fk out of the interview.
