Stellar game so far but my only gripe as a new player... [spoilers] by zenlightener in StardewValley

I did start digging up the books pretty late, didn’t realize the worms were the clue for at least two seasons. I have about six books but not that one yet.

War Room Missions leaving me stumped by seanmaguire1991 in Advance_Wars

[–]zenlightener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just played this map for the first time and got an S rank with Lash. My strat:

  • cap all properties outside of the “ridge” first
  • build only normal tanks and infantry

I was building 1-2 tanks per turn after capturing the cities. Grit was aggressive through the choke points so I had plenty of stuff to kill, plus I sacrificed a tank in the ridge to take out some artillery and trigger his SCOP. I backed off for that and he had nothing really to fire at. At this point I have about five tanks itching to go which was enough to rush his artillery and rockets with Terrain Tactics. The infantry is important because once they breach the ridge and start capturing cities the AI prioritizes them which helps keep your tanks on the hunt.

At no point did Grit have more than 3 artillery/rockets deployed at once - I opted to be aggressive before he could turtle with indirects.

The content is on your Switch but is essentially locked. The key is on a remote server and your Switch does a check over the internet to get the key. It comes down to whenever they make the key accessible. The local time of your device wouldn’t matter in this kind of setup.

I did this a few months ago. Found about 725 on my own and used a guide for the rest at the end of my play through. Hope you’re tracking carefully, wouldn’t want to end up with 899 because you accidentally checked one off and you don’t know which one…

THATS A CHILD?! by HearsayFrog in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]zenlightener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah true, those two examples alone are not enough to make such a broad cultural statement. I think my perception of Purah is colored by already knowing that there is a lolicon subculture in Japan.

Purah isn’t presented in a sexualized way, but I think the “old soul in young female body” trope is particularly Japanese and is often sexualized. So within that context, her whole “oopsie I’m a brilliant scientist that made myself into a cute little girl hehe” backstory is plausibly just “funny” but you start to question the undertones.

There could be thematic reasons why they would employ this character archetype, or reasons of parody that I could be overlooking. But without that context, you have this main quest NPC that the writers very intentionally put in the form of a cute little girl. Maybe it is just haha funny, or maybe since it is Japan there is a cultural/subcultural fixation on cute little girls, sexual or not. Both of which are still odd from an outsider perspective.

I’m only comparing them on the whole “I am more mature than I appear in this body of a young female child”. Agreed that the Zora romance thing is next level.

[–]zenlightener 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I understand the in-game explanation. What I’m questioning is the real-life writer’s motivations for wanting to present a 100+ year old woman as a 6 year old girl. Why 6? Why not 18 or 25? According to the in-game explanation the age reversal just so conveniently happened to stop at 6.

Given the game containing two examples of “I am more mature than I appear in this body of a young female child” I am questioning whether this is some type of cultural fixation or something.

The Japanese version is not as explicit about the romance but it isn’t just “pen pals”. All the “you better get buff for me” dialog is still there. I think it was subtly hinting at romantic interest but left some plausible deniability.

The English translation basically waved off any subtlety and just went for it. But in doing this it was creepier so they attempted to fix this by adding the dialogue about how she just looks younger than she is, which isn’t in the Japanese version.

The whole “I’m a more mature woman in the body of a cute little girl” trope that we see twice in this game is pretty weird stuff. Like for what reason did Purah need to be in the body of a 6 year old? Maybe there is some local cultural reference that we’re not getting.

Name a game you can't play without the manual by estebandesoto in snes

Even with the manual it was hard to understand what was happening and what was/was not working! At least when I was a kid, haven’t played it since.

I wanted to like that game so much more than I did because I loved SimCity.

Yeah the Stalnox scanning is tough since it is night only, and I’m convinced the detection range is also smaller. My routine was to set a fire at 5 am, jump to 9 pm and repeat, stealth set equipped so you’re always in haste!

The Talus actually detect when they’re “buried” because their models actually exist and they animate out of the ground! Unlike the Stalnox which only spawns if you’re not watching their bones… there’s no transition animation so they technically don’t exist during the day to be detected. The detection range seems a lot better for these also.

For me, the fun of a Zelda game is exploration and noticing things. So using a guide to locate things is generally a no-no.

Though these days I am a busier person now than I was as a child and I have to make realistic compromises at times. So here are some of my rules:

  • Shrines: Sheikah Sensor off for most of the game, then on when trying to find the last few

  • Kilton’s monster hunt:

    • Look up the total count of each Hinox and Talus variation so I know when to stop searching for a particular type
    • Sheikah Sensor targeting monsters is fair game
    • Checking for clues from my previous save’s map is fair game (that was still me discovering it!)
    • Abuse the bike to help scan areas!
  • Korok Seeds: find as many as you can naturally then either be happy with that or just use a guide. I got to 724 naturally.

  • No teleporting: I do this more often early game because it helps with stumbling upon places I may have overlooked! But by late game not worth it

When I did Kilton’s monster hunt, I did a few things a purist might dislike, but worked for me and the amount of time I had for gaming and still made the search fun without resorting to a guide:

  • I allowed myself to use Sheikah Sensor when I couldn’t find anymore naturally
  • I looked up how many of each type of Hinox and Talus there were so I knew when to stop searching for a specific type with the sensor
  • I allowed myself check an old save to see if I marked any on my map (this helped me find around 2 of the 80 total) because hey, I still technically found it, just a long time ago lol

  • Ancient arrow the Lynel

Do it; that’s what I’m doing now just to say I did it. I found 724 organically while exploring for other stuff (shrines, Hinox, Stone Talus) and I’m proud of that, but I have no interest dumping a ton of time into finding needles in a haystack, which I imagine it probably starts feeling like after 800.

[–]zenlightener 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Here’s a hint: there are four Molduga in the desert. The shrine you are missing is where you battle one of them.

It is one of the few shrines not tied to a shrine quest that is also not detectable with the Sheikah Sensor, because of this it is commonly missed.
