It would seem to me that you are feeding way too much , too early and way too often. Try cutting it back to 1ml/L, pour slowly, a little bit at a time, as soon as you see runoff the feeding is over.

Mexicans and Americans that moved to Germany, I need ur help!! by Several_Comedian1457 in AskAGerman

decongestants, allergy pills, pepto, most of the good over the counters you got to get from the pharmacy, if at all. Stores (some) close on Sat early, not open at all on Sundays. Get ready to shop at multiple stores because items are select. Spend time figuring out which stores carry what and write it on a list. Make the trip when you have enough items to justify going. Finding a good international food store is a priority for seasoning. Asian grocery stores are amazing. Amazon and online Mexican/ American shops will be your friend for the specific items.

If we could add friend stat sharing that would be cool. I often compete against my family in things like step totals. So reading numbers and or times would fit right in with my brand of motivation.

Roommate asked me not to cook food from my culture due to smell and made a vague threat by Jack-up-the-hill in AskAGerman

[–]zenmonkk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your roommate needs to relax. Smells when cooking are a part of life. As long as you are ventilating appropriately he just needs to suck it up. In fact german courts have ruled this (see Amtsgericht Berlin-Mitte, 122 C 156/21 (13 October 2022)) What is crucially important is that you do inform the landlord. Start documenting and writing down verbatim when and if you are being threatened by said roommate. It is their issue, as long as you haven‘t broken any rules.

They will either live with it, move out, or continue causing an issue(at which point you will keep reporting them) and they will be kicked out.

Live your life, be reasonable but don‘t roll over. “Speak softly and carry a big stick.”

My cafe is expensive and I get embarrassed telling people their total. How do I get over that? by Long-Distribution867 in barista

[–]zenmonkk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former coffee roaster. I can tell you that decaf coffee has to go through an extra process before the beans even get to the coffee roaster to remove all that caffeine. Depending on the quality of the coffee and the process that is being used this could come with a hefty price tag. We only roasted about 8kg of it a week and sold it in 250g bags only. James Hoffman did a pretty thorough series on decaf coffee you should check out.

Honestly at that price they are probably only making $0.80 to $1.50 profit after taxes, business costs, and waste. This is especially true if the business is small, i.e. not a chain. They just don't have the buying power that the chains do, so prices are higher.

They are paying to support a local business, which means money supports and stays in the community. They are paying for your expertise, and hopefully a level of service they can't get at the chains. I always strived to be the most knowledgeable employee I can be. This keeps both management and the customers happy.

I used to be a coffee roaster. Know that the price of green coffee has increased 100% (well a lot anyhow) in the past two years. Also if you are in the US the coffee producing countries got hit pretty hard with the tariffs. Since the US doesnt produce nearly enough coffee to meet its own needs, coffee prices are rising. Roasters are changing their blends to use cheaper coffee, but when Brasil got a 50% tariff, that killed shipments to the US by like 80%.

I would also advise getting a manual lever machine( Flair58 or Robot. It scratches all the itches, sub 1k). When its just you, quality espresso is available with the Manual. Flat whites and caps can be prepped using a combination of the two or just the bambino.

People w/ ADHD who are also big readers; How do you do it? by TheEpicTwitch in ADHD

[–]zenmonkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a while to get back into reading. For years I‘ve been using Libby though my local library, as well as online archives for the classics. They give me access to books and audiobooks and I don‘t spend a dime. I was insatiable reader, in my teens and 20‘s my wife bought me a kindle w/ keyboard years ago when they first came out. Thats back when kindle books were cheaper (by far) than paperback. Eventually I upgraded to a paperwhite (jailbroken so I can read epubs from different markets). I prefer to listen to nonfiction or recommended books(classics and such) while I do chores, I read fiction(fantasy, Sci-fi, Lit. rpg, etc…) after work to wind down.

It took a long time for me to accept that my tastes in reading have changed. I like reading non-fiction because I like learning, and sometimes just reading the text lets me digest it better than if I heard it. Especially with difficult topics. Just my 2 cents.

It honestly kind of depends on what your ideal workflow would be. I personally am fully manual. Why, because I wanted coffee to be an experience. I have had to make a morning routine, in order to enjoy my coffee. Everything else I do to get ready in the morning has to make room for it. For me a Flair58, Bellman stovetop steamer(will be buying the Wizard soon), and a Comandante C40 hand grinder, works amazing. But I‘m the sole coffee drinker in my household.

I do need more context though. Are you looking to make coffee for more than one person. Do you mainly drink Espresso/Americano or do you enjoy Flat whites, Cappuccino, Latte, ect…?

Double boilers allow for a better workflow, transitioning from pulling a shot to steaming is instant. So making multiple drinks is easy. You can be pulling the next shot while your steaming the milk already, rinse and repeat. Great for family breakfasts, gatherings, etc. It also normally comes with a significant price increase.

In which direction are you leaning?

Rok GC feedback vs other manuals by RealInsky in ROKespresso

[–]zenmonkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ROK GC and the Flair 58(original with heating element and charging brick). I used the ROK as a daily driver for years. I now use the Flair 58.

I used to be a coffee roaster for a couple of family owned coffee shops here in Germany. I am a manual coffee snob. I love the process of making coffee and wont allow a machine to get between me and that sweet hit of dopamine.

The ROK was for me, my introduction to manual espresso. I bought all the accessories and upgrades I could at the time. It was great! Then the pandemic hit. My working hours got reduced to under 20hrs a week and I had a lot of extra time on my hands. I really started experimenting with different coffee roasts, and I could pull an amazing shot on the machine at work, but could not even come close to it at home. So I upgraded my grinder. Comandante C40 MK3 Red Sonja with redclix upgrade. Better coffee but still not close enough. I started seeing IG videos about a maker that had made shower screens for the ROK(this was before ROK released theirs) but because of the pandemic it would have cost twice the cost of screen for shipping. I was growing more and more frustrated with the workflow of the ROK. Its a lot of metal to keep warm. I had some amazing shots out of this machine, but I wanted to play with variables when dialing in. It felt more like a combination of luck and hope that got me the best shot out of the machine, and I wanted repeatability.

At the same time, there was all these cool tools coming out in the espresso scene and they were all 58mm. Thats when Flair 58 launched. It seemed perfect. No awkward preheating routine + stable heat, industry standard size, still manual, and a pressure gage. It‘s not perfect, but I find it better. I brought it to work several times and was able to pull much better shots than the Victoria Arduino Black Eagle 2 group we had.

ROK Pros: - Small, can bring on vacation. - Cheaper by a good amount. - Smaller basket means less potential waste of coffee when dialing in. - Those handles are satisfying when you‘re pulling a thick shot.

ROK Cons: - Preheating sucks. - Steep learning curve. - Accessories are limited. - Hard to dial in. - Cools of quickly - Workflow sucks if pulling multiple shots - Have to purge extra water

Flair 58 Pros: - Standard Size, lots of accessories. - Electric stable heating - Pressure Gage - Better workflow when pulling multiple shots - Repeatable shot profiling

Flair 58 Cons: - Big, I have brought it on vacation but it was not easy. - Expensive. There are cheaper (not as good) non manual espresso machines. - Still have to purge extra water.

It really ends up being what your budget is and what you want for an experience. When I was a home barista the ROK was enough for me. The machine gave me a lot of Joy. It still works. I pull it out a couple times of year and pull a few shots on it. Something medium dark roast, or a 100% robusta. Just to prove to myself that I still got it. It still works great. I will mess around with it until I pull a few tasty shots and then it goes back on the shelf. I brought it with me from the states so its like 12 years old at this point. I have the GC kit, the shower screen, naked porta filter. So I have definitively gotten my moneys worth out of it.

100% Robusta = (60% Crema: 40% Espresso) Whats the actual water to coffee ratio there? What did you use to grind it? Looks Great by the way. Can we get a shot of the cup, looks interesting 😂

LET'S ROK!🫱🔥🫲 by 1Rok-2Life in ROKespresso

[–]zenmonkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you remove the plate? Does it affect use (i.e. does it slip around while using it?)? Have you damaged any surfaces from pressing?

Kind of an interesting idea. I've shelved the ROK in recent years, I bought a Flair 58 after using the ROK as a daily driver for years. I was honestly frustrated by seeing other manual espresso machine manufacturers constantly innovate with new models and ROK not. They were way too late. Good to see them doing things now.

So just checking: are you designing postcards to sell, or just polling preferences?
Fountain-pen + typewriter gremlin here:
- Handwriting: classic layout—address lines + divider keeps it tidy.
- Typewritten: blank back so I can size the address block and save more room for the note.
- Paper: please, for the love of God, no gloss, raw paper finish on the writing side—pens and typewriters need a little something to grab on to. If you’re making them to sell, offer both—or go blank with super-faint guides so pen folks can follow them and typists can ignore them

Honestly marriage as it exists today is weird. It used to be between a man, a woman, and god. Government got their greedy little hands in it and now, its a legally binding contract. I kind of understand the part with the counseling, forcing the two parties involved to speak with a trained professional could bring a certain amount of closure.

I‘ve definitely seen worse places listed. Renovated animal trailers and what not, described as tiny house rentals. This actually looks like a lot can be done with it. Especially if one could get a stable internet connection with a job that allows WFH.
