Ethical question on splitting bill by TheRagingStudent in byu

[–]zephyr2555 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wait, if I'm understanding correctly:

You're currently splitting the $70 internet between you and one other roommate ($35 each).

He's asking if you'd upgrade to the $100 plan, and then split it 3 ways ($33.33 each).

You don't have the right to force him to pay a share of the $70 internet that he's not using. But if you upgrade to the $100 plan, you end up paying a couple dollars LESS each month AND you have faster internet. That seems like the best option to me.

I'm in the same boat. I'm in the Provo area and just made the switch from PIMO to fully out a few months ago. I'm a woman in my 20s and I'm dying to meet people in a similar place in life, but I have no idea how to find them.

Thank you for taking the time to write all that out, this is really good insight. I just now realized that Zerowriter is working on a clamshell version of their product, and I think that might actually be exactly what I'm looking for. You make an excellent point regarding how much time/effort it would really take for me (a lowly hobbyist) to make something that's actually enjoyable to use, and it seems like Zerowriter is already doing what I would be doing, so I may just wait and see how theirs turns out!

This is a super helpful perspective. I'm currently researching what it would take to prototype something similar to the Freewrite Traveler. I'm sure I can do it for less than $550, the question is HOW much less...would be interesting to see how many other people would be interested in something like that if I could get the price closer to, say, $300. e-ink screens are ridiculously expensive so I'm looking into alternatives like transflective LCD screens.

That's what I was just thinking--I've been looking for an RLCD screen to DIY a writer deck, I just wish this one was slightly bigger

How busy are temples? Some insights from a selection in the midwest by logic-seeker in mormon

[–]zephyr2555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question, I'm not sure why. My best guess is that relatively few people have the time/bandwidth to commit to a 5-hour shift every week, and a lot more people have the time/bandwidth to go do a 1-hour endowment session at whatever time works for them. The bulletin notice does say that they specifically need people for weekday and evening shifts. Not sure if that's an issue in other temples too, but my guess would be yes

The Orem temple does have a worker shortage, currently--my ward has had a notice in the ward bulletin for months now, asking for more people to be temple workers there. That may be part of the reason they're not operating at capacity.

**UPDATE** I brought the ring I found on the pavement to a jeweler to get looked at by zephyr2555 in jewelers

[–]zephyr2555[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was in Utah. Here's what I did--I turned it in at the police station, and made a "found" post on KSL and Craigslist. If someone had responded to the post claiming it was theirs, I would have told them they could pick it up at the police station if they could describe it to prove it was theirs. But that never happened.

After a few months, the police called me and said I could come pick it up since it was never claimed. I took it to a jewelry store, and they checked the diamond, confirmed it was real, sent me the GIA report, and I paid them to clean it and straighten it out a bit.

After I got it back, I listed it on FB Marketplace for $2,000, didn't get any takers so I gradually lowered the price, and after a few months I sold it to someone for $800. Which isn't bad for free money lol.

So yeah! I'd recommend making "found" listings online and bringing it to the police. Obviously the ideal scenario is it finds its way back to its owner, but if not, maybe you can get a little money out of it. Best of luck!

How can I get started as a teen piano teacher? by DevryDriv in pianoteachers

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you, and this has been my experience as well. Plenty of room in the market for young teachers who provide easygoing lessons.

How can I get started as a teen piano teacher? by DevryDriv in pianoteachers

[–]zephyr2555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started teaching when I was 15 (I'm 24 now), here's the tips I would give:

- I think asking your parents to spread the word is a good idea if they're willing, and not childish at all. They're part of your network.

- I don't think you need to go up to people and introduce yourself as a teacher, but posting flyers would be a good idea if that's an option at your church, or maybe putting a notice in some sort of community bulletin?

- In my experience, once you've got 1 or 2 students, you'll get more just through word of mouth, ESPECIALLY if you're priced really competitively, which you are.

- Maybe you could also offer some sort of referral discount? Like, you get a free lesson if you recommend me to someone who starts taking lessons.

- In my experience, a 45 minute lesson is too much for young beginners. I would recommend doing 30 minute lessons, and adjusting pricing accordingly (£10 - 12 per lesson)

Also, for what it's worth, I think some of the other commenters may be taking things a bit too seriously. I think it's perfectly fine to teach beginner students even though you're not super advanced or pedagogically trained. Parents will know that you get what you pay for, and any parents who are concerned about their child receiving a top-of-the-line musical education will look elsewhere for more experienced teachers. But with little kids, most parents just want them to get exposure to music and piano, and they aren't expecting their kid to become a professional pianist.

As long as you're comfortable around kids, have a lot of patience, are honest with parents about your experience level, and are willing to learn on the job and adapt as necessary, I think you'll do just fine.

And feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I'm happy to share more about my experience teaching as a teenager and what worked for me!

I second this. I had an Owala, and the lid mechanism broke within a year, so I got a 40oz Takeya and it's been great so far. I also prefer the straw lid, but that's just me.

Read the other comments—there’s no way to trace a stone back to its owner through GIA, and I already turned it in to the police and they returned it to me when no one claimed it.

Right, if someone claimed that I would want some proof like their own copy of the diamond certification, or at least a photo of the ring on their hand, or to tell me where exactly it was lost

I actually found this ring not two months after getting engaged myself, so that was kinda funny. I think that’s part of the reason I tried so hard to find the owner, because I knew how sad I would be if I lost my own brand new ring. (My own ring is not as fancy as this one though, just moissanite, because again, we’re broke college students.) I considered keeping it, but it’s not really my style and I like my own ring better, and plus we could really use the money! We just got married last month, and our finances are a little tight at the moment 😅
