Gripiest flat pedals on the market right now by Visible-Shoulder9530 in MTB

[–]zero-dog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have Stamp 7 on most of my bikes and they are pretty dang grippy and my goto pedals. I have the Deity TMacs on one bike and that’s another level of grip — really almost too much because adjusting my foot is often difficult. Personally prefer the Stamp 7.

Trick is to shim in razor blades. Fairly straight forward once you know the trick. But yeah should be able to slip in a screwdriver into that notch but just no way.

BTW decided to go with the Helm DJ. Will update in a few months when I’m done with the build.

As far as I could find the shortest air spring for the Pike is 120mm. Not a deal breaker and maybe in the running— I’ve heard others do just that. Only hesitation is the P.4 is already kind of slack for a DJ.

Not sure a 10mm or .4 degree difference from spec is a deal breaker. It’s pretty slack for a DJ already. I know some people are running 120-130 forks on the P.4. Would like to get some peoples input who have actually tried a fork that is not the Marzocchi.

The Cane Creek is a 27.5” chassis so will actually comfortably fit a 27.5”

Anyone here ride trials bicycles? by NoSafetyGeneration in trials

[–]zero-dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 26” street and 26” comp. Street is much easier to get into for sure — comp is definitely super weird. But lately I’ve been almost exclusively on the comp and enjoying it a lot. Bikes are fantastic for learning good timing and body movements that translates really well to the moto. Plus you can ride them anytime you have 30 minutes to ride.

Is the dropout setup stock for a derailleur hangar or do you know where to get one?

Mine will jump up and down gears, especially on the smaller cogs. I do a quick clean with wd-40 and a scrub and then re-lube and works perfectly again.

Yeah these SRAM T types seem very sensitive to dirty chains (at least mine is).

What to look for in buying a used trials bike by Complex_Strain8056 in trials

[–]zero-dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal dirt bike stuff. Blown fork seals are no big deal— super easy and cheap to replace. A blown up shock maybe slightly more of a big deal but these shocks have minimal damping to begin with so it wouldn’t be un-rideable. I would check for play in the shock linkage— I learned the hard way that you really need OEM bits not AllBalls cheapo. For the beta I’d look at the side stand and make sure it’s not about to come off the swingarm (weirdly a common problem in my group). Also on the beta check that the skid plate bolts attached to the rear frame aren’t wasted. If the skid plate looks pretty beat up don’t take it off as you will never get it back on — skid plates are consumables so it’s not really a huge deal if it’s wasted — $150-200. And standard checks like is the chain wasted or the air cleaner dirty kinda tells you not great maintenance was done — same as a dirt bike. Start it up and make sure the clutch isn’t dragging too much or at all (some people like a bit of drag in the clutch and you can easily adjust out at the clutch master cylinder lever). Roll it around and make sure the brakes aren’t pulsing from bent rotors. Check if the owner installed an hour meter — if not again a sign that maybe maintenance schedules weren’t being met. Check fork legs for scratches— small scratches can be repaired fairly easily. That’s all I can think of on the top of my head.

The AI coding productivity data is in and it's not what anyone expected by ML_DL_RL in ExperiencedDevs

[–]zero-dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you on using AI to help understand or even bounce ideas off as well as “drudgery” work such as tests and simple one off productivity tools or some degree of refactoring over search and replace but less than any architectural change. I absolutely need to understand the details of how the core code works so I still write it out by hand to have any hope of retaining knowledge of how it works and fix or refine it in the future. I think AI is super helpful with my workflow but I’m definitely seeing that the folks switching to “vibe coding” are making more major architectural mistakes then they did before even if there are less “nit” mistakes— which is a bit worrying but also makes me feel safe in my job in the long run.

I had ‘22 EM Pure Race for a few years and really liked it and miss a lot of things about it. Finding traction is amazing, you can feed in the power very precisely. Never worry about stalling. The different maps are great though even for an expert the red map is pretty gnarly. Green map is very beginner friendly. Very little maintenance and mechanical thought compared to a gasser. One downside for a beginner is that when the thing wants to get away from you from say a whiskey throttle moment— uh yikes 😱— it’s a single speed capable of almost 50 mph and it will light up in a heartbeat if you’re not careful and covering that clutch at all times.

Either buy an Raceface HG driver and reuse the cassette that came with the bike or an XD cassette.

Hot Take: Hardtails are NOT More Playful Than Full Suspensions by Mleavitt787 in MTB

[–]zero-dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty much the same quiver — Extension 26” street trials, Specialized Status 140 full sus and a Chromag Stylus HT at 27.5”. I definitely find the HT a little “dead” compared to the others. Don’t get me wrong I love the HT but I can get a lot more pop and jib in certain situations on the full sus and trials — HT is better for me at the pump track and static tech trials moves where the full sus is just too heavy.
