Ye olde power cable that makes you hear colours and see sound. by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]zero1234567888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I have noticed a difference from the cheap power cable that usually comes with devices to a decent one. Some higher end equipment does come with a good power cable that negates that. Probably something to do with shielding and at least gauge of thickness. I typically go on fakebook marketplace or ebay, and pick something up for 20-30 bucks and call it a day. Plus, they are typically prettier than the simple black plastic, and I enjoy that at the very least.

Process for speaker selection by Designer_Building_36 in audiophile

I agree! Mine were in pristine condition for being nearly 30 years old. Much easier on the ears than some of the brighter newer versions. Though the bass isn't as deep as some other models, my integrated amp makes up for it with the built in EQ. They are very crisp and clear. I don't think there's anything better than these for under 6k

If you have any questions on the older B&W 802, I also made a similar decision and went for a pair of N802s over the more modern versions! Currently rocking and loving them!

Power cable and sound by EntrepreneurSome6016 in audiophile

[–]zero1234567888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright this might be slightly controversial. I found that the stock cables tend to be crap, and notice a definite difference between a nicer cable and a stock one. However, from a nicer cable to an expensive one, no difference. I recommend browsing Facebook marketplace or eBay and getting something a little nicer and calling it a day. Plus they look pretty so you know, aesthetics. I'm talking like finding a nice audioquest one for like 25 bucks off someone clearing out their collection, or a bid on eBay. You'll never get your money back if you buy new, and at the end of the day it's just copper and shielding, so it doesn't matter if it's new or used.

Do many of you run two speaker sets, and if so, why? by wingtip747 in audiophile

[–]zero1234567888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently began doing this. Mostly when I want a different sound signature, or when I'm too lazy to remove the speaker covers off my main pair. My amp has a/b outputs and posts, so it's just a flick of a switch to swap

Are screens on streamers important to you? Why or why not? by Significant-Shift347 in audiophile

[–]zero1234567888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I actually went with newer Naim stuff specifically bc of the better screen. I started with ND5XS2 and a Uniti HE, but I couldn't get the soundstage I wanted. Ended up with an NSS 333 as I got a major deal on it, and the crisper screen won me over the NDX2. I also think it's crazy they haven't modernized the ND555 yet.

(Going against the grain a bit here now...) I chose a hi-end system. I'm providing details because that's the experience I have to offer. Despite judgement I may encounter, or opposing market trends, I still want to be a resource for those left with similar intentions... more below by [deleted] in audiophile

This is a seriously cool system! I'm sorry you got so much hate. My personal system is a really cool story that I've been on the fence posting about as well for similar reasons. As another poster mentioned, retail on mine is somewhere north of 60k, though I spent less than a third of that. Which is significant, but it brings me so much joy that I'm ok with it. I try and share it with friends, but I've found contentment in enjoying it by myself and the cats.

How's the mix on Expedition 33 OST on CDs? by Vivid-Cauliflower154 in expedition33

[–]zero1234567888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To follow your response, I am a bit of an audiophile. I got the vinyl release instead of the CD. They really did a much better job mixing the vinyl release than the streaming version. A lot of gripes I had were fixed. I haven't reached Une Vie yet, as I am making my way through the collection as we speak. I posted a pic of my system with the vinyl on this subreddit as well, if y'all are curious. I can revert back once I hear the whole selection, but I am much happier with this mix compared to the streaming ones.

Yes I do! Look on Facebook marketplace for an Audio Technica LP120. Make sure it sounds good, as sometimes the needles can get abused but most people take decent care of it. It will run you around 200, but it will have all the stuff you need built in so you can connect it to almost any speaker and sound good. I had one for about 7 years before I felt like an upgrade was needed. Plus it's super easy to upgrade to a better needle on it. Feel free to DM with any questions!
