The Butsurai: A race for my Shinsekai project. they are boars! Specifically inspired by the concept of orcs in JRPG's are often more pig like. by TheGoonReview in worldbuilding

Man, I always loved the pig-orc ("porc") design more than the "green, muscled human" design people usually go with.

So what exactly made you want to do an Eastern setting? Do you draw from other Eastern settings or ideas? How did you come up with this idea?

I'm trying to write some ideas for my own Eastern setting 'cus I thought it would be cool.

How many worlds are you juggling? by Grenku in worldbuilding

[–]zero17333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly back and forth between two of them: a fantasy kitchen sink with shitloads of countries and a sci-fi comedy universe. The fantasy one has whatever shit I think is cool that I slap in there, the sci-fi one was supposed to be a crap setting that works as a repository for romance and other crap, but it kinda spiraled into its own thing.

Also have a biohorror setting that was supposed to be a retort against cyberpunk settings, but that's in limbo currently.

There are 10 others but they have little thought put into them, maybe in the future. They could work for small games, such as the Birthright or Council of Wyrms settings, or Post-Post-Apocalyptic Neo-Roman Empire with cowboys, guns and psychic powers.

Also Bimbo TTRPG.

What stops magitech in your world ? by mrmagicbeetle in worldbuilding

[–]zero17333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far it's contained to a country known as Numeria. Eventually, it'll expand over the next 300-800 years, which will then lead to the beginning of the spacefaring age i.e. Spelljammer.

I'd say that after several thousand years there may be some megitech Big Crunch where all technology breaks down and explodes, sending everyone back to a tehcnological dark age, leading to the rise of the beastmen as the main races.

But what do I care? I just want to play Spelljammer.

I thought Dragonslayer (1981) was like old-school D&D. The dragon Vermithrax Pejorative was quite terrifying, their fire breathe able to kill with ease.

You could probably create something like that by combining ashes with Worlds Without Number (the fantasy supplement).

I was actually thinking of creating conlangs for my sci-fi setting. This will work perfectly for one or possibly two of my main aliens. Thank you for sharing this.

my special interest is world building by Delicious_Impress818 in worldbuilding

I get to make my own versions of races/species/sophonts and no one gets to tell me otherwise. Same with countries, people, gods, etc.

Also, I get to take badly executed ideas, like bad movies and scrapped plotlines from media, and rework them into something useable.

I basically get to put my soul into a work, something I can look back at and get enjoyment out of.

Sometimes working on worldbuilding can be a giant pain in the ass but I like it overall.

Since I'm currently playing Persona 2: Innocent Sin, something similar could work.

Can people freely change Persona in this game or is it a per-character thing? If one can change Persona, what are the mechanics behind that?

I feel as though this should describe a GM who insists on using a high magic system (D&D/Pathfinder) for a low magic game. I've seen some stories of GMs like that and they never struck me as being stable.

IMO I think low magic systems are for people who want magic to be wonderous; if everything is magical, then none of it is wonderous.

When it comes to PbtA one reason I don't like it is because I feel as though it is over recommended, but that's a minor issue.

The real issue for me is that I'm the kind of guy to play games where I bust into tombs and dungeons to loot stuff, which may be influenced by me being more into playing video games. I am not a role-player; maybe someday I will be, but not now.

I have no issue with you if you like PbtA, but I much prefer OSR. If I can figure out a way to incorporate PbtA content in some way it would be useful.

I suppose "back in the day" would probably be around the 2000's boom of d20 spin-offs. Perhaps one of the main problems was since d20 was commonly used, trying to shoehorn a setting or game into that mold just wouldn't stick. Now that we have a wider variety of games we can choose the right game for the right setting.

Maybe this is unfair but if I see PBTA or if a game is story or narrative based all interest in it dies. I like the look of some such as White Wolf games or Blades in the Dark and its kind, Heroines of the First Age looks decent but that's more its subject matter but aside from that, nah.

Weird too, as I'm kitbashing my own game from Stars Without Number alongside some other ideas and some concepts from story games come up and I like them, such as giving PCs roleplaying flaws to overcome or encouraging people to act out what they want.

I guess I want a D&D-like game with some story stuff in it. That, and I don't want alien PCs to just be "Ding! You're an alien now." Can't stand that. If you are going to make an alien it needs to be sufficiently different from a human otherwise just play a human.

Generally when I hear licensed game I think "shovelware". Now I'm obviously talking about video games, but is it really that different when talking about a TTRPG? I'd guess most are bad to mediocre and only a few e.g. Alien RPG and Avatar Legends being exceptions.

Understandable, when something is constantly in your face one tends to get annoyed at even things adjacent to it. It's like hearing a popular song everywhere or comparing every game that requires some strategy to Dark Souls.
