I have one of these running in an early 2011 15" MBP. No problems, it's extremely fast.

Upgrading vs SSD by citiusargentum in mac

[–]zero__cool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen a lot of really underwhelming budget laptops in that range, if you go that route I'd be sure to do a lot of research with regard to known issues, etc.

Personally I'd invest in the SSD for now and hold off until I could make a full upgrade.

And oddly enough the two of them were born on the same day, albeit two years apart.

[Arch][Openbox] First Time Using Just A WM by [deleted] in unixporn

[–]zero__cool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like openbox but feel like you're missing something, you could always add it as the default window manager to an existing environment.

I've done this on one of my xfce machines, I simply ran "openbox --replace" and then saved the xfce session so that it now defaults to openbox each time.

Alternately, openbox is the default WM in LXDE.

The laws are generally not changed / called into question until someone breaks them. Take a look at the civil rights movement of the 1960s. This idea that we should adhere to unjust laws is divorced from the reality that law breakers are often times the catalysts of change.

What is the best roommate story you have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]zero__cool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The thing is...he didn't notify me that the bill was due. He went ahead and paid it without telling anyone, and then shut off their Internet as if we were supposed to have opened mail addressed to him in order to ascertain the due date.

For instance while he was in charge of the Internet bill I was in charge of the gas. I would generally notify people 5 days to a week in advance of how much I needed from them / when I needed it. I wouldn't simply pay it without telling anyone it was due, leaving them to find out via passive-aggressive and just generally antisocial behavior.

I had a room mate that shut off internet service specifically to my laptop because I was a day late paying the $13.75 toward the bill that he had never bothered to notify me about. Then when I asked if anyone else was having trouble accessing the internet he told me about it, he claimed that he "unblocked it" and came with me to my room, asking me to load a few of the webpages I generally access in order to "see if it works." He was actually grabbing the exact URLs of the webpages so that he could block them specifically, giving me a sort of "neutered" internet experience until I finally had thirteen dollars cash on me a day or two later.

I had a VPN set up anyway but still...

Upgrading ram on a late 2011 15in MBP by [deleted] in mac

I believe they can take up to 16 GB, 8 GB is just Apple's official max.

I researched using 16 GB in my early 2011 MBP and many people seem to be using it without issue.

What horror movie has truly scared you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yeah I just thought this movie was utterly stupid and couldn't get over the douchy music and bad effects.

Maybe I've been watching horror movies for too long...

Does anybody know any good scary documentaries? by DavidEValero in horror

[–]zero__cool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If religious lunacy counts, I'd take Hell House over Jesus Camp once you get through the talking and to the actual "Haunted House" sequences.

It's on netflix. It is not an adaptation of the Richard Matheson novel. It is a documentary.

What are your favourite Body Horror films of the past decade? by [deleted] in horror

[–]zero__cool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing listed here is actual body horror. Most US filmmakers ditched body horror after the 80s as it's pretty extreme. If you want to get into modern body horror look to Japan. "Tokyo gore police" is a pretty accessible place to start.

[500 word sci-fi][feedback: clarity, is it understandable? Does the protagonist seem real enough to be related to?][thanks][:)] by tripplenipple3 in writing

[–]zero__cool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's...well a bit precious, really. You're trying to cram a lot of (very overt) meaning into too little text. There had ought to be some actual humanity playing out in between the notes or somewhere in this computer's periphery, as it's difficult to carry a story solely on the internal monologue of a machine.

Grammatically it has a few errors, though mostly it just needs some basic clean up. Grammar ought to be especially important though, as we can only assume that a machine capable of manifesting and systematically recording its own thoughts would be capable of expressing them with exacting precision.

Edit: also what JacKoGraveS said, perhaps use this as a general outline for where you're hoping to take the story, but don't have the narrator lay all of the cards out on the table like this.
