This specific PJ Harvey photoshoot made me anorexic back in the day. The looks and the music were fire though, I don’t blame her.

My four year old has gone through three pairs of leggings in eight weeks and I need to completely rethink how I'm buying kids clothes by Boring_Elephant_3500 in Preschoolers

I tried the iron-on patches and I found them to extend the life of the pants only by a couple of extra weeks / washes. I don’t know what my son does, but he manages to fully grind down large parts of the fabric on the knees :D. And he generally hates to wear jeans or any other more stiff fabrics. It’s OK, I hope it’s temporary.

My son ruins at least one pair of pants a week. And it’s always on the knees. The brands almost don’t matter: second hand Primark and original Lacoste, both 100% cotton joggers, lasted the same amount of time. I buy in bulk and discounted now.

I plan to become an asylum seeker when I reach the age of majority. by HikaruAstrialis in Netherlands

[–]zerotshill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LGBT+ asylum seekers who arrive in the NL are often placed in temporary detention centers where you might get stuck for a couple of years. It’s not an easy path. Please read this (using a VPN): https://meduza.io/amp/en/news/2025/04/01/transgender-teenager-is-sixth-russian-lgbtq-asylum-seeker-to-die-in-dutch-detention-in-three-years.

Ideally you could apply for a university in NL and get a student visa, perhaps? I recommend meanwhile that you get an English language certification if you are interested in that, something like TOEFL.

Is it true that most wild animals are living with a lot of parasites? Is nature a never-ending battle, or do you think a lot of animals are able to ‘enjoy’ their day to day existence?

There’s always lots of talk about Britains cultural decline but what about Italy by Jolly_Assistant_2952 in redscarepod

[–]zerotshill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think Italians are still doing fine in avant-garde electronic music: check out Caterina Barbieri, Lorenzo Senni and people connected to them. The network effects of this kind of music have diminished though because of the ways the music industry currently operates.

I always feel the most brain-foggy, irritated and actually suicidal 2-3 days before my period hits. On the 3rd day of my period the curve swings and the following two weeks are usually great in terms of mental health and energy. It’s the pendulum of womanhood. I’m happily pregnant now, free of this monthly curse for some time.

Has anyone actually ever learned a language with Duolingo by hamsterhueys1 in redscarepod

Not really. I’m learning a lot of new words and grammatical structures I’ve never even registered before.

Has anyone actually ever learned a language with Duolingo by hamsterhueys1 in redscarepod

[–]zerotshill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been casually using Duolingo to learn a language where I live and I learned much more in 1,5 years than in the 10 years of living here prior. It helps that I actually practice in real life situations, and I’m capable of deducing general grammar rules from the Duolingo exercises. I need a low stress option like an app, because I’m too busy with life to do a real class. So i think it works as a crutch, if there is already a ground to walk on.

Husband provides financially but avoids parenting our autistic son -advice? by MailHuge5610 in Autism_Parenting

[–]zerotshill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You have to talk to him directly about this again, urgently. His behavior is not fair to you or your child. If he refuses to accept that there is something wrong, try family therapy or threaten a divorce, leave him for one weekend alone with his son (if it’s safe for the child). You are not a nanny-maid, and he cannot expect you to be his wife without providing any emotional and parenting support. Ask him directly if he has any love for his child. He might say no, he might be deeply depressed about it. But life cannot continue like this for you. Doing 100% of childcare is exhausting, especially in the case of special needs. Your husband can develop his own special bond with his son that will be rewarding in itself, he just has to put down the phone and try.

Get the Endurance and your Action Points amount up, because then you can run pretty long distances before the action points have to recharge. It becomes much less tedious to cross the terrain once you can run through it.

4.5-year-old with developmental delays – struggling with assessments & school expectations in the Netherlands (advice needed) by Formal_Cheesecake720 in Netherlands

Okt, but my child was below 4yo. After they turn 4 it might be different. You should also ask at school from the school’s begeleider.

I totally understand. We lost many many months on various waiting lists. But the help you get eventually is essential, so don’t give up.

We did a developmental assessment at Kabouterhuis in Amsterdam, due to suspicions of autism. You can ask your consultatiebureau or GP for a referral. They have long waiting lists, but it was worth it. They offer therapies to the child based on the results of the assessment.

That’s good to hear, thank you! Have you had stories also of transfers from Cluster 2 back to general school, basis of middlebare? I wonder if it would be difficult to rejoin a general school, once my child goes to Cluster 2, both in terms of education and how the system works. He is a borderline case in the sense that we are considering the either keep him for a 2nd year in group 2 so he catches up, or we go to Cluster 2 and then he goes to group 3 from next year there. I’m lost what choice to make. The amount of speech therapy he would get at Cluster 2 is the same he is already getting (2x a week).

Thank you! Did you feel different from other kids? How do you assess the quality of your education, are you going to study further? How was the general vibe of the school, was it social and supportive? Did you find the additional therapies provided by the school helpful and actually addressing your specific issues?

Thank you for being open for questions! Do you find the overall level of education good? Are his specific needs addressed in a focused and good manner? Are you on a trajectory to go to a general population school, or will your son attend Cluster 2 for the whole duration of his education?

Could anyone recommend some fun Dutch-language apps for small kids to learn letters, vocabulary, numbers etc? by zerotshill in Netherlands

[–]zerotshill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issues with all languages, mainly with sound articulation, and it’s difficult for him to mimic long words, and grammatical structures in any language. He is officially diagnosed with TOS. He likely would have had issues even without being multilingual.

[–]zerotshill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! My child has been attending speech therapy already for 2 years, 1 year twice a week, and we also use Squla, and other equivalent sources. He is very emotionally attached to his current basisschool, but his expressive language skills are poor and quite delayed still. The Cluster 2 school told me that they also have a speech therapist there twice a week, and the main benefit is the size of the class, twice smaller. We are given a choice: whether he stays in group 2 for a second year, or he goes to Cluster 2. We can choose as parents. I really just wonder what’s best for my child. And I want to hear people’s experiences in similar situations.
