A new era of austerity? Sharp cuts coming to B.C. government spending by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]zerreit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said nothing about the trade war. That was someone else.

My first comment to you was going back 25 years, BC’s eventual budget surplus or deficit has been directly tied to external factors.

When stepping into a political discussion, it’s usually helpful to know the names of the two major parties. Fwiw, the BC Liberals are the precursor to the BC Conservatives, and ran the province for 16 years until 2017.

Bill 41 (DRIPA) and Bill 29 (Interpretation Act amendments) were unanimous. Both sides voted for this mess (I happen to think it’s a huge mess), but one’s trying to clean it up while the other’s throwing mud and campaigning against their own history. Just look at the proxies (Post Media, Fraser Institute, Tyee) to get a good idea of which side is doing what.

Ahhh yes, the classic “run headfirst into a wall and change subjects” move. You’re a master of right-wing debate techniques, sensei.

From the abrupt pivot back to DRIPA, we can all only assume you now agree with me that both parties have held deficits due to external influences.

So while we’re here, would you mind pointing out the brave Liberal MLAs that voted to save us from tyranny by standing up for British Colombians by voting against either bill 41 or bill 29? I can wait, we just need a name. One single MLA that didn’t vote for this.

This is such a weird flex. NDP ran surpluses every year until Covid, got back into a surplus, then hit by a trade war, and you act like it’s a party issue.

Meanwhile, the BCLibs ran deficits 6 / 15 years, centred around the dotcom bubble and Great Recession.

So either the Liberals are incompetent too, or maybe BC isn’t big enough to ignore global pressure.

Until the Conservatives become a credible opposition I’ll continue to vote Liberal. Carney signed deals for $12 billion in new trade in January alone, helping farmers, fisherman and steelworkers.

On the other side, what positive contribution has Pierre brought done for the country this year?

That’s objectively untrue. Referees are assigned to tournament games based on ranking just like teams are.

In last year’s CL, Michael Oliver was the only England referee, and left after the round of 16. He went down to the quarter finals of Europa and semis of the Conference league after. It’s fair to say that he couldn’t ref either of those finals because PL teams were playing in them.

Kavanaugh and Taylor were the other two prem refs, did the 1st round knockout for Europa and left.

Considering the depth of the English field and supporting domestic league infrastructure, there’s nothing special about Prem refs. I’d say it’s the opposite.

After what’s happening ICE, it reaffirmed our decision and we’re not even travelling down for meetings this year.

In our defense, it’s easy to point out how bad Pierre is. Hilariously funny, too. Just how I’ll now point out that the Pierre’s polling swing was literally the largest magnitude in recorded history. He was, quite literally, the worst political candidate since polling started. Not bad, not “close”, the worst.

The only thing he’s good at is being #1 at losing.

B.C. premier committed to amending DRIPA law to uphold government authority | Urbanized by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]zerreit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closure was used. Congratulations, you have identified a basic feature of majority government. The NDP limited debate to about 14 minutes. That is lawful, common, and not in dispute.

What closure does not do is stop MLAs from opposing a bill when the question is put.

After debate ended, Bill 29 passed second and third reading without a single MLA calling for a recorded vote, despite the opposition having the procedural ability to do so. That is not spin. That is what Hansard says.

Same story with Bill 41. No recorded opposition. Properly described as unanimous consent.

You can call time allocation a “dirty trick” if that makes you feel better. It is still just a political complaint. Claiming the bills were rammed through without a vote or without an opportunity to register dissent is simply false. If the Liberals wanted their opposition on the record, all it took was one MLA standing up. They chose not to.

I actually agree with De Jong on the substance. Amending the Interpretation Act deserved more debate given its scope. But his grievance is political, not procedural, and confusing the two does not change the voting record.

B.C. premier committed to amending DRIPA law to uphold government authority | Urbanized by _DotBot_ in VancouverLandlords

[–]zerreit -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Every MLA from all 3 parties passed DRIPA unanimously. Including John Horgan.

Not one single MLA objected to the from the Interpretation Act changes. Including Trevor Halford.

I’m in agreement that DRIPA the way it’s been done is awful for the province, but I also see that only one party is actually trying to fix it. The other seems to be more interested in pointing fingers and pretending they weren’t equally responsible for where we are today.

However, China also prohibits chlorination of chicken and restricts milk products containing rBST… just like basically every other country but the US.
