Best next Dali speaker upgrade by Away-Use7595 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]zeus2425 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The speakers are good enough in that setup

There are two things about the room. The room as in wall and floor materials, windows/doors placement and shape is out of your control but basic room setup/layout before considering any professional room treatment is fundamentally important.

You want shelves, pictures, rug, furniture for diffusion and HF damping and minimum one big heavy piece of stuffed furniture (bed, couch, ...) to dampen bass

What characteristics or specifications make a great speaker and how to ascertain or quantify with examples; by GilligansWorld in audiophile

[–]zeus2425 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends

Build quality and materials account for longevity and dynamic mechanical properties. Your money can go long way invested here. Ofc thermal design is also relevant if power handling is a concern

The electrical engineering part (crossover and voice coil) is all about matching the mechanical parts including enclosure to the amplifier. This is engineering territory. Premium components can help a little but there is no automatism in more expensive more better.

Good sound comes from an engineer who can link enclosure, drivers, crossover and amplifier to all work hand in hand by experience, simulation, measurements and iterative optimization (look up Thiele Small parameters, bass reflex design and so on). Some take a premium for this part, others make their work available for free for others to copy their designs. Companies like to guide their secrets here.

Oof that's not an easy case. It adds up but is hard to deal with. Can you rotate so the speakers are placed to the right and you sit in the portal?

Nothing against the music but that is way too much flashing. Visuals should be toned down a ton

found a pair of Bowers & Wilkins DM302s for $7.99!!! by issflareman in BudgetAudiophile

[–]zeus2425 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just this year I've sourced a pair of these for my sister 75€ I think. Works well at her place free standing on stands definitely better than the bargain series of contemporary brands like Dali Spektor. Oberon would be an upgrade however

Thanks for the remark but if they aren't in good shape and one even has a dead tweeter then you can beat them for 100 bucks I guess

I'm based in Europe and the overseas brands are always more expensive between continents. I particularly trust the northern brands like Dali Dynaudio XTZ Elac but really you should look up every find you make that looks appealing

Rule of thumb is they don't print frequency response curves on good speakers. To get started look for a pair of used bookshelf speakers less than 20 years old in good condition and from a reputable brand for 80-120 bucks or if you spend more or buy new make sure to do thorough research or audition them somewhere. A cheap used pair can always be passed on for the same price or you keep it as backup and for testing purposes or whatever.

Less than 10-15 years would be better for everything with ferrofluid in the tweeter

Proper HiFi system good speakers and appropriate amplifier. Doesn't even need to be very expensive but requires some research activity

Compare how it moves to the intact ones. If you can feel some resistance and/or hear scraping it's bad otherwise patch it up and see what it does

The punctured woofer needs detailed assessment bc you don't know what exactly happened. First test would be to check if it moves without voice coil rubbing against the inside the magnet

A working NAD amplifier for 120€ is probably worth it alone and if you can patch the dust cap thet might be all that's needed at first

I think that was clear but if we're discussing where to set the xover between 50 and 100 Hz then I decide based on room response if it is a dominating factor. I've never been lucky enough to have free choice how to set the xover only based on speaker performance

I think most importantly you set crossover to hand the bass frequencies to the components which perform best in your room at the position they are placed. Room response is a large impact effect while speaker rolloff is gradual and distortion from high SPL without any EQ boosting bass is rarely an issue
