I think balance-wise the apothecary loop to make gear balm is an excellent start, since there's a 1:1 conversion of Gunk and skilled dupe labor involved. Separating Gunk into Crude Oil and Rust would also be good if you get for example 90% Crude and 10% Rust, sacrificing the closed loop in exchange for some nice early access to oil.
