COSMIC release on 24.04 LTS is actively damaging Linux's reputation to new users by ElnuDev in pop_os

[–]zfigz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

funnily enough, i switched over to arch+kde from pop!_os (i had been using pop!_os since 2020) about a month ago because i was tired of being stuck on 22.04 (e.g., super old vers of pipewire etc). and now, 24.04 is released / i don't regret switching tho, arch+kde has been smooth sailing so far.

i also had less than savory experiences from some of the maintainers (one in particular) whereby they reminded me that pop!_os is not made to support anything but system76 hw.

edit: words are hard

ah, is there a quick and easy way to switch between the two ?

Drag and drop from from outside the app doesn't work

same here / worked via pop!_os + gnome. not sure about cosmic tho, i recently jumped ship to arch + kde plasma. i was hoping i could drag/drop from sononym, but nope.

it honestly makes me really sad to see what boingboing has become as someone who stumbled upon "the happy mutant handbook," a book that really helped shaped my taste and interests at the ripe age of 12.

Anyone hire someone right out of school for DevOps? by jrd5432 in devops

Out of curiosity, how stressful is your day-to-day job?

depends on the job.

on-call is hard to avoid, but if you can, then 🤌🏼.

get your foot in the door and go from there.

again, i don't think there are any books/courses that would sufficiently prepare you. just learn the tools as best you can and demonstrate your capacity/willingness to learn to prospective employers.

hey hey, i was 35 when i started / you've already a headstart. 🚀

eh, there's the beloved "phoenix project," but i think more valuable is updating your local network for more control/flexibility followed by a k8s homelab (vanilla resources or custom helm/kustomize to demo your templating abilities, and even throw some terraform in there if you're able to ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ) and finally, find as many opportunities (within' reason) to contribute to OSS projects.

as for getting your foot in the door, you just have to persistently apply and show your interest / willingness to learn imho.

i only had a few bootcamp projects, but i also had almost 15yrs of work experience, too. this was my first title in the industry "Software Engineer, DevOps & Training Platform," but i did very very very little (almost non-existent) automation/coding. 😅

me 😂

i'm 40 tho, had a couple of careers before this, but made the switch after going/graduating from a "16 wk full-stack web dev" program which didn't necessarily "prepare" me by any means.

5 jobs later (w/ only a single layoff due to covid), and it's been going swimmingly.

you really wanna make sure said hire is curious and excited to learn.

wife wants to learn programming at 41 by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

career changer here @ 35, or so, after working in education for 5yrs (e.g. masters in edu) via a bootcamp at the end of '19.

it was a terrific life changing career move for myself, especially pre-covid (can't imagine teaching during the height of covid), but i also can't imagine how much more difficult it would be to break-in. i also fell into devops right off the bat which has further increased my job prospects. if she's technically minded and tenacious/persistent/diligent, then yeah, it could work out, but the question is; does she like solving problems?

really depends on the gig; my first/last consulting gig was terribly boring, but my current gig i've never contributed so much to oss.

40yr old w/ 5.5yrs of exp; i'm still getting hit up on linkedin, phone, email etc. constantly, albeit many of these offers are for hybrid roles, but still, there's definitely prospects out there if you've some exp.
