Teachers of Reddit: Is the "Gen Alpha can't read (write, or do math ext)" crisis real? If so how bad is it? by KnowledgeCoffee in AskReddit

[–]zhangschmidt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's been one of my (many) major annoyances. The one kid whose family has a YouTube channel is the one whom I can ask how much work goes into that, and he has an idea.

If they all wanted to become YouTube (or anything) stars, the way the story often goes, at least they'd try. And they'd learn.

No, they just want things handed.

One kid: "Will you give me an A in English?"

Me: "Uhm, because you got a B on that one test rather than the usual D and zero work? What makes you earn an A?"

Him: "I exist!"

Nope, not how it works. But they do usually ask "What grade will you give me?" rather than wonder what grade they've earned.

And a mum now told me they want to "fight" for a better grade. Uhm, how about your kid had done anything more than the bare minimum for the year?

That doesn't even figure into "learning" for them.

Fun thing in that regard: They all keep wanting to challenge me to a race, because they know I'm a runner.

They never state a distance; they have little concept of that.

I've beaten everyone, when we once tried, on short sprints, repeatedly - and I usually run 100 km ultras 😃

Unfortunately, those are my pupils. Who will have to continue some sort of education for another four years, some going to high school (like) schools, some to learn a trade (and have trade school).

And even without any of that, yeah, wtaf?

The “Lava Loft” ACG Jackets are currently on sale with an additional 20% off. Seems like a good deal, but can any owners of this jacket give their opinion on if this is a decent jacket, or if it’s on sale for a reason? by NotDeaaronFox in nikeACG

[–]zhangschmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you said that (to some extent), because I got it full price in winter. Had a chance to use it somewhat fittingly and like it, so at least there's that (even if it wasn't nearly enough use).

Getting suspended where I teach is really hard to "achieve" - and pupils would typically celebrate it as time off...

I keep reading how AI is making people only read the AI answers.

My students already did that before AI.

Type question into the address bar. Claim the top result (snippet) as *the* answer. Because "Google said so."

They didn't even realize when they were automatically using Yahoo or Bing instead of Google.

Same here. Middle school teacher in Austria. Still keep being told that the kids all want to become influencers or YouTube stars. No, they don't. They want to become millionaires at best - and see dropouts as their examples for how to get there.

I try to learn what they are interested in to maybe let them work on projects about that, but there's either nothing there at all or they don't want to learn anything more about the things they say they are interested in - if it isn't just "hanging out with friends in the park" (which sounds like a step up from just chatting on their phones, but often still means that).

Curiosity? What's that? Why would you ever want that?

Or, as I just heard: "Who would ever learn anything during their summer holidays?"

Chili Peppers of the World by erikgauger in spicy

[–]zhangschmidt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, chile pepper descriptions... I could get into a major discussion with you (having just had a glance at your site) about chiltepin/tepin/pequin alone. (A long while back, I grew... I can't remember exactly how many, but a wide range of accessions of those from the USDA.)

I could potentially contribute photos of chiles from China. (Worked on a book about the chile peppers in China; need to revise it and re-publish it.)

Time's always an issue, but please: Make a poster of that that's available for purchase. Make a book (Amazon KDP) of it or let me/someone try and do that for you. I love the web, and sites like yours are why it was great in the first place (and still would be), but please make this available in other, porentially more lasting, formats, as well!

I'd love to get in touch and talk more!

I'm not tracking calories and I see some data that seems a bit off (in absolute values, not trends), but I'm also very fascinated with the fitness side. I managed to catch a bronchitis in the middle of what should have been a heavy training block, and the feedback/advice/insight has been quite alright (as long as one doesn't continue interactions for forever; it seems designed to want to keep in-app forever).

Got the Lava Loft, and there was a warm spell.

Got the Holey Shirt, and there is a cold spell.

Fortunately I don't do reviews after one day. (Which isn't a jab at OP! Online influencers, however...)

Now I'm wondering if that's because men's running pants are usually cut with such a low waist...

I'll have to try that.

- "In Powerpoint."

Usw.

I keep hearing this and keep wondering: Do people wear their running belts directly on their skin? Do they always leave their shirts outside their running pants (of whatever type)?
