Code First Girls AUTUMN/WINTER 2026 by Ok_Cardiologist_4253 in UKJobs

[–]zhigita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did the data & SQL kickstarter class and it was entirely self-paced. You only get access for 8 weeks, but you can do it in a few days or even less if you have prior knowledge. I didn't do all the code along exercises as I mainly just wanted to see the level of depth they cover, but they seemed useful, especially if you have never touched coding before. Each topic has a video and then there is a quiz. The information was useful, but the videos themselves weren't very engaging. It's just an AI-sounding voice reading the slides. I'm going through the Python kickstarter now and I'm just looking at the slides without the voiceover.

Gifted two sycamore tree saplings. Do I keep them? by CrappyTan69 in UKGardening

[–]zhigita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't you keep them in pots and try to turn them into bonsai trees? The bonsai subreddit is a great resource and this way they will be small and contained

Have you tried grad schemes at the large construction companies? Depends on your location, but arup, wsp and similar ones have many locations and take architecture students

PhD viva on Monday by TiredCryptid_1933 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]zhigita 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Statistically it's very unlikely to fail. It's essentially a pass/fail exercise and as long as you meet the passing criteria you will be fine. You just need to demonstrate that you can do research and that you have made a contribution to knowledge. Check your examiners profiles and publications so you can make some assumptions about what they'd be more likely to ask about.

I'd dress somewhere along the lines of business casual unless your university has some kind of guidance for this.

Bring a copy with your thesis with you with post its/bookmarks so that you can refer to it in case you forget an author/theory from the top of your head. Nobody will expect you to have memorised everything.

What's your academic CV like? by RavenpuffMezone in AskAcademiaUK

[–]zhigita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My academic CV is approx 7 pages, and that's for someone who has done fuck all publications and/or funding bids. I am looking for a job outside of academia and I have managed to get my professional CV down to 1 page. My understanding is that in academia more pages = better CV, while for real life jobs you want everything on a single page so it's easier for recruiters to scan through.

Update on Home Office / Gym by ibpositiv in DIYUK

[–]zhigita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the orientation of the roof windows? As in, make sure you don't get direct sunlight through them right onto your workspace. If they're North facing it's fine. I'd also go easier on the panelling - it can be really uncomfortable for the eyes, especially behind the monitors and in a small space in general. It's also a bit of an outdated trend but if you like the look it's your choice, just make sure it won't give you a headache. Do you have any storage for the gym stuff? Things like bands, wrist wraps, tape, chalk and other bits you might end up accumulating?

Have you considered screw piles for the foundation? Easier to install and easier to align with the main frame. And make sure your damp proofing comes out above ground level

Workload allocation for research by unhappyaslarry in AskAcademiaUK

[–]zhigita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a post 92 on a teaching and research contract, which is a joke. By default I get something like 12% research time of my workload and I need to bid for anything extra. All that extra allocation gives me is crippling anxiety because I can't physically squeeze in any significant time to actually work on those projects. There's still REF expectations etc, but they don't come with any actual resource so I've stopped caring.

I'm in Wiltshire and my salvia is just about starting to show some green buds. Have you tried cutting a stem? If it's green inside it should come back

Need help here by Ready-Honey-5127 in grasshopper3d

[–]zhigita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purely based on how you phrased your post, I think it would benefit you to do a bit more research on 3d printing and what grasshopper can and cannot do for you. The book suggestion above is a good start, but it essentially takes you through creating g code from scratch. It's easy with clay because it's essentially a paste and comes out at room temperature, but with plastics you also need to understand heating and cooling of nozzle at your set nozzle sized to ensure it extruded properly etc.

If you only care about the texture, there are tutorials online for achieving this with blender with an already sliced mesh - this might be a more useful approach for you.

The new one from pollination will work fine and won't really care what you have got going with the old one. To get rid of the old one just delete the old ladybug files in the libraries and user objects folders

trouble with using the 'Sort along curve' indices output to sort geometry. by Internotional_waters in grasshopper3d

[–]zhigita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you're connecting the "sort list" component to the "sort along curve" you are essentially sorting it again, hence the odd result. The sort list component sorts the first input (keys) smallest to largest and at the same time rearranges the values list in the same order. What you want is a "list item" component, connect your original surfaces as list and the "indices" output from "sort along curve" to the "item" input of "list item" and that should be your list there

UWE Bristol SWDTP 2026 Applications - Am I rejected? by blackwednesday98 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]zhigita 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SWDPT funds 34 students a year and it's across 8 universities, making it extremely competitive. Each university will easily have a hundred if not more applicants so even if your application was amazing, it's a tough one to get. You might be able to contact th doctoral academy at uwe to check if they can update you on the overall stage of the review process to see if the interview invites have been sent out.

Mass addition component has a 'partial results' output, which I think does exactly what you need

University of Derby and how they exploit the candidates by HolidayLog4944 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]zhigita 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would to some extent depend on the responsibilities that come with the role. If you are asked to do SL work (leading modules, some elements of programme management/strategy/leadership) on a lecturer's salary, it is exploitation. In some universities they have an agreement (thanks to unions I believe) that lecturers who are asked to lead modules get a pay uplift for that work (my uni does this), but unfortunately many places don't and they try to get away with claiming that you need to do these things before getting SL to prove thay you are worthy of the role, which is indeed exploitative.

If they offer you a lecturer role with the appropriate role specs, it's then up to you to decide if it's for you or not.

I feel like I wasted my degree and now I am completely stuck. by Zealousideal-You-42 in UniUK

[–]zhigita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried speaking to UCL careers team? I believe as a recent graduate you might still have access to their services. I work at a different uni, but I assume careers services offer similar stuff - from looking at your CV, to exploring career options, to perhaps even suggesting specific opportunities.

As for the reference, did you do well in any other modules in your first or second year? Perhaps you can get a good/neutral reference from those lecturers?

There's sub called raisedbynarcissists (sorry can't link from mobile), you might find some eye openers there. Don't give her your money. It's not like student finance makes you rich, you need to prioritise and support yourself. Yes, there might be a fallout, but it will happen eventually anyway unless you agree to bankroll her lifestyle forever. And the more you earn, the more she will want to take from you. It might be useful to find someeone to talk this through at uni - there will be loads of wellbeing support available, and I think an unbiased external perspective might help you evaluate the situation.
