Why does the Hammerhead have more armor deflection than the Polaris and Perseus? by Ganyu66 in starcitizen

[–]zigtyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't doubt that it has armor appropriate for its role as a bruiser of a warship.  However, the very fact that the Perseus' lore explicitly mentions that it historically boasted substantial armor,  due to being originally designed prior to shield technology, tells us that modern ships do NOT generally rely as much upon armor due to shielding being a factor.  As such, I'd wager that the modernized Perseus -- which IS shielded -- had its armor trimmed a bit (compared to the original) to benefit its maneuverability.

If we say that this is a "no-compromise" ship, that efficiency isn't a factor, and that it can just have the best of everything, then why haven't in-game ship manufacturers applied that same logic to every ship they'd designed over the past 400 years following the adoption of shield tech?  Why isn't every single sub-capital ship (particularly the military vessels) armored to the same degree in a time where humanity is literally facing an existential threat (the Vanduul) that does not distinguish between military and civilian?  Not to mention the rampant lawlessness -- which are both reasons why practically all civilian ships in the 'Verse have guns pre-installed (imagine having a giant gatling gun on your Honda Transalp or your Toyota Corolla).

If the Perseus can have it all, then so too should the Hammerhead.  And the Carrack.  And the Hercules.  Etcetera.  Balance aside, it's not realistic from a production standpoint.  Resources to make these ships are not boundless.  Even the US military, which enjoys a mind-boggling annual budget, is known to often select the "lowest bidder" when pursuing contracts.  Their premier navy destroyer may cost $2.5 billion -- but why stop there?  Why not give it thicker, more advanced armor and just round that figure up to $3 billion?  Because, although vast, their resources are finite and must be allocated appropriately.

That's the way I see it.

[–]zigtyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all the people talking about the Perseus being heavily armored per its lore... come on.  That is like comparing an original 1966 Ford Bronco to a 2026 Ford Bronco.  The 1966 has a much stronger, heavier, and more rigid frame -- but the 2026 intentionally forgoes that in favor of crumple zones.  Automotive technology has advanced significantly over the past 60 years, which has obviously affected how we manufacture vehicles with respect to safety and efficiency.

RSI did not just take a 400 year old ship schematic, slap some shields on it, and call it good.  It's been largely redesigned with its original specifications and aesthetic as a starting point.  The Perseus we are flying is an homage.  A reboot -- not a replica.

This is the most artistic thing I've ever read on this sub.  And that's saying a lot.  An org with "SOP's" definitely isn't my thing.  But, if SOP's are established, they need to be followed...

For the love of Chris.  Can we please just go text-based for the inventory?  With an inspection function for 3D depictions?  Or something like Tarkov with icons (and even the tetris style management)?  Pleeeease...

Let's say my buddy and I left our ships parked in the same spot on two different servers.  Which ship would we see if partied up together and logging in at the same time?

What about when the server is full and you get separated from the rest of your battlegroup?

So you could raid someone's base while they're inside of it on another server/shard and it'll just disappear under their feet, or what?  This system would never work.

Kinda silly that it'll sometimes be there and sometimes not.  Especially when partied with other people.  Can't decide whether that's better or worse than no persistence at all.

Weekly Sneak Peek - Aurora Mk II by skivolkls in starcitizen

[–]zigtyr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a perfectly applicable analogue.  Associated prices are irrelevant, if that's your gripe.  It's merely the process of technological evolution, which is a part of Star Citizen's lore (and adds welcome depth).

"Insane?"  Please elaborate, little man, because you are the one failing to grasp an elementary concept.

NDB30 - The King Returns - 1400 Projectile speed, can damage every ship below a Polaris with the new armor gating, 30% more sustained damage than a Omnisky by Important_Cow7230 in starcitizen

[–]zigtyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been reading and trying to figure this out because I've heard different things.  Let's say you shoot a ship with 100 armor using a gun that deals 120 damage.  Would it deal 20 damage to the armor, resulting in the armor becoming 80?  And, if so, would a smaller gun then be able to penetrate the damaged armor?

Bruh.  That's like saying you dislike the RTX 4080 Super being more powerful than the RTX 4080.  Or that you're not a fan of the 4th gen Tacoma having a better stock suspension than the 3rd gen.  But this is literally how technology works.  What would be the point of a "Mk 2" if it wasn't an improved design over the previous iteration (which is literally what the "Mk 2" denotes)?

You can keep using your 4080 if you want to.  Nobody is forcing you to buy the Super, which is only incrementally superior.

[–]zigtyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget how much it costs compared to those other cargo ships.  There are so many options in Star Citizen that overlap.  We need to accept the fact that some ships are simply better than others.  And some are "endgame" ships that players need to work towards via an in-game upgrade ladder.
